Let's make a harem show!

Well, we'd need to know what characteristics we can use. Like my idea of having two of the haremettes think they're in their own heroic fantasy and treat everything like a big adventure while the other characters just look at them strangely. As for trope based characteristics, let's make the evil girl incredibly sexy but let's make the nice girl physically charming in her own way. Oh, and one of the boys should have literal Bishie Sparkles which he attributes to a skin condition.

Would including a dueling harem be too much?

How about we make this occur in a universe typically used by shonen series?

...Shonen series can occur in just about any universe, though if you want to generalize, it's generally Real Life with a twist, rather than a whole cloth fantasy or sci fi setting. There are a metric fuck ton of exceptions to that rule however, on both fronts.

Off hand, pretty much all Humungous Mecha shows stand out.

Wait...a harem series focusing on two girls and their harems...plus mechas? O.O

that would pretty much be Code Geass: The Gender Flip though, considering the characters we're talking about.

OK, but we should have at least some fantastical elements, like a giant mecha made out of cardboard boxes.

Lolwut? I'd say a twist other than mechs tho, something more substantial than the box mechs. I was using mechs as an example for shonen that isn't baseline.

Cyberpunk? Magical Girl? Fighting Shonen? All of the above?

Perhaps a world where Americans still duel for their honor in Shonen-style fights...fueled with passion!

I like Chihuahua's idea — but to fit in with the Villain Protagonist idea, the girl has been wronged somehow by each of her suitors (and they don't know it) and she enjoys watching them fight to the death and intentionally pits them against each other.

Maybe distribute powers like Avatar The Last Airbender, lots of people have them, but there's still a bunch of normals, and not everyone has the mental aptitude to master.

One of the members of the Harem should be an extremely over the top Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy semiparody/semihomage/semireconstruction of/to Dragon Ball Z. Just 'cuz.

I'd rather not see another boy with a harem and trying to balance out a bitchy girl and her harem with a nice boy and his harem really rubs me the wrong way.

The Villain Protagonist isn't bitchy...Well, she is, but hopefully in a Magnificent way.

Then we stick with having the nice girl instead of a nice boy. Or have a cross-dresser.

Do you think it'll be too cliche to have the "nice" center of the harem be a new exchange student?

I wonder if we should have a contrast between the haremettes themselves what with the villainous girl's haremettes having counterparts in the heroic girl's harem.

If the crossdresser is a boy, then its a boy. If it's a girl, then the answer is up in the air, though seems like a cop out to us wanting a boy, having to stick with a girl. SO no, I'd rather not see a crossdressing girl. One of the haremettes can be a crossdressing girl, though.

That's one idea. Not complete counterparts, but there should be parallels.

By the way, I think the OP should have the final say, or at least be the tie-breaker.

Y'know...Haremettes, like the Mickey Mouse Club! OK, bad example. How about...just members of a harem.

Yeah...I feel a bit guilty. We seem to be hijacking the thread and steering it in the direction of a different genre.

Then again, just about every "Let's make a" thread veered away from the original genre. Shounen is definitely not a Shounen right now, Magical Girl has veered off a bit...
