Is Asuka trying to help him somehow?

She actually follows in his footsteps and got him to teach her CQC and marksmanship, as well as to get her into a junior mecha tournament where she's one of the top champions, with intention to enlist in the military herself once she comes of age (motivated primarily to get connections she could use to track down Kyoko's killers).

So he's got reason to be proud of her.

He doesn't really like the idea of Asuka becoming an Eva pilot, but doesn't try to stop her either beyond repeatedly asking if she's sure about it, pointing out that she's not a kid anymore to have her hand held. And considering how much ass she ends up kicking (she's basically the female Eva pilot equivalent of Char Aznable), he's about to have plenty more reason for being proud of her.

I see. He's at least got some reason to feel happy then.

What are you planning on doing with the subplot about Kyoko's killers?

It was an unsanctioned assassination ordered by one of the more hardliner SEELE members who took issue with Kyoko's scientific findings involving human psionics because it contradicted SEELE's dogma of humanity being evolutionarily stagnant.

The guy to whom the order was passed down to is Mikhail Sokolov, a naval officer who made his first named appearance in the aftermath of Sachiel and who's going to become a major antagonist later on. Aside from that assassination, Asuka's vendetta against him will be cranked up even more for highly personal reasons.

Why he's an antagonist is because due to his own backstory, Sokolov has a hatred of transhumanism and tinkering with the human body, which earns Kaworu and his family the guy's hate just for existing.

Sounds very interesting.

Considering that the guy then tank-bred Asuka and Kaworu a daughter for use as a Super-Soldier against the latter, following up by kidnapping their eight year old other daughter for blackmail purposes?

Take a guess.

Here's a hint: those girls have an Ace Pilot mother, an Ace Pilot aunt, a one-man walking weapon of planetary mass destruction father, plus a One-Man Army Berserker big brother. As well as over a hundred Evangelions backing the family.

One mustn't forget that the Nagisas are not to be messed with. You mess with one, you mess with all of them.

Say, here's something that hit me. I think it's fair to assume that "You hit like a girl!" wouldn't be something unusual for Asuka to say to Shinji as an insult. But then I had this line of Fridge Logic.

Asuka is a girl.

Asuka hits very hard. So hard that, in the manga, she could take down a whole bunch of bigger young men on her own.

Based on that, wouldn't "You hit like a girl!" be easily turned on its head and interpreted as a compliment towards Shinji? Because I can see that being her way of being covertly nice towards him if she ever gets into a secret relationship with him. Or, to be more canon compliant, Shinji suddenly making that realization and voicing it, prompting Asuka to become tongue-tied as she tries to get out of the hole she dug for herself as a tiny inner voice laughs and breaks down all the arguments she comes up with to convince herself that she was not being convoluted in her approach to flirting with him (as she had done several times in the anime).

It's worth remembering Asuka thinks of herself as a woman already, not a girl. She tries her best to be sexually agressive (both to confuse Shinji and to appeal to Kaji), to act 'mature' (even if in truth it only makes her look even more immature), to present herself as a professional, and to leave all 'childish' aspects of her past behind. She even (well, in the dub) uses 'Wonder Girl' as an insult.

So, while Asuka could find praise in "You hit like a woman'", "You hit like a girl" would still be an insult in her eyes. It's not about gender, it's about age. She also says 'boys' with contempt while thinking well of 'men' (crushing after Kaji, respecting the authority of Gendo and Fuyutsuki without a second thought).

Hmmm, good point. I guess it would depend on how the phrase actually works in Japanese, i.e. if it uses onna in its most general sense (i.e. woman or girl) or specifically uses either onnanoko (the actual word for "girl" when distinguished from "woman") or ko (generally "child", but often used to mean "girl" as well).

I really want to write an Asuka-centric fic, but the way she is in canon... I just can't work with that.

SV is a seperate entity from Space Battles, and formed after SB fucked over one of their admins. So, that's factually incorrect.

Pardon the digression but thought I should make the point...

[up][up] Agreed. I don't hate Asuka as a character, but her backstory and personality is just way too pitiful and messed up to write something Asuka-centric. In my fic, everybody's backstory changed to a certain degree to make them more well-adjusted.

I can see that.

In Burning Vengeance-related news, I'm starting on the next chapter, and this time..... Yui gets to do stuff onscreen again!

I normally don't give a tinker's damn for such stories... but if it's from you, I'd give it a fair shot.

I'm thinking heterozygotic twins, because they don't really resemble each other that heavily.

Question is, what could've caused their separation? Should we go with the classic parents-divorced-and-split-the-kids setup? Or should we make it so that the separation was not consensual on the part of the parents?

Regarding the latter, I recently read a news article about a South African woman getting sentenced to jail because she stole an infant from the hospital right next from said infant's sleeping mother and raised the girl as her own, with the whole thing getting discovered when the girl coincidentally started going to the same high school as her older sister and the other students noticed their stunning similarity, told the older sister who told her parents, who immediately realized what was going on. Maybe something similar happened to Mayumi, having been stolen from the hospital by a crazy woman and/or someone with money/power who lost her own kid and wanted a Replacement Goldfish?

It'll be fifteen hours from now.

Also, idea. What if Asuka's red hair is actually a dye job?

That is, her natural hair color is pale blonde but she dyed her hair in order to distance herself from Kyoko.

Well, that kinda runs against her being depicted with red hair as young as age 3-4, during Kyouko's pre-mortem bout of insanity, i.e. at a time when Asuka still loved Kyouko very much and clung to the hope that Mama will snap out of her madness.

That said, Manga!Asuka's hair was more strawberry blonde than "true" red, and Rebuild!Asuka often doesn't even qualify as red IMO, instead being more of brownish shade of blonde.

So what do you say? That we swap the hair colors, ie. Kyoko was a redhead and Asuka dyed herself blonde to remove the association?

Nah, your original premise as stated would still work if you go with manga-Asuka or Rebuild-Asuka as a base.

You know, I had considered a self-insert for Evangelion.

Except I had him explore "I'm here so how do I get home?" part to it's inevitable conclusion.

I just shut down as myself and Asuka got mind raped as I realized this.

You gotta start somewhere.

SCE-related: I need a nickname for Rei, to be used by Asuka. How would Blueberry sound? Would it be Asuka enough?
