I thought Cloverway's decision to replace English with French worked fine.

Yeah, I agree, now it kind of makes no sense. But then again, its just ONE scene. The rest of the dub is outstanding.

Yeah, sometimes you have to do some serious localization in order to make a scene like this work in English, rather than just leave it unchanged (presumably) for fear of fan outrage. I've seen a lot of anime lately do stuff like this and it's always jarring to some extent.

... You know, if my headcanon here is so bad you can't think of anything positive to say, you could at least tell me so and/or point out the flaws in it so I can try fixing them.

It could work.

But now that I think about it. So everyone is hearing this Silver Millennium Language as whatever their primary language is then, which is why all aliens are speaking japanese?

Would this apply to races that weren't around during the Silver Millennium then? is there anything that wouldn't translate because it's just too foreign sounding?

One Strip! One Strip!

Translation Convention?

[up][up] For the other races that do not speak Millingua, I chalk it up to them having made the same linguistic discovery as the Silver Millennians — that is, they discovered how to imbue/create a language with an inherent Universal Translator feature. Thus the people of Kinmoku (where the eponymous princess and the Sailor Starlights come from) would be usually speaking their own language instead of Millingua, although communication would be much more fluid if both speakers are at least reasonably proficient in the other's native language (makes mental translation faster and more accurate).

[up] Translation Convention only applies when either the subject characters are out of earshot from any other character who speaks English (or whatever the work's native language is), or the characters who don't speak the conventionally-translated language do not understand anything being said.

In the dubbed Shin Chan episode, they call Neo Queen Serenity's writing "childish", a good substitute to saying she used no Kanji. However, as they all look it over, one of them says she "spelled 'daughter' with a Q." Um, what? That's clearly Japanese calligraphy. Yes, the original Japanese did mention spelling mistakes but unless they have a katakana and hiragana equivalent for Q, that line is just perplexing.

So, wait, can you still watch it if you get a Hulu account or is it just gone entirely?

[up][up] Yeah, English dubs tend to be too lazy to digitally edit Japanese text into English and instead hope the viewers are willing to ignore the discrepancy.

[up]But that just creates another problem entirely: why would the text be in English if they're in Japan?

Unless this is where your headcanon comes in or something.

... He was talking about the English dub; the problem you're speaking of is exactly why I'm criticizing the dubbers' decision to not change the Japanese text. My headcanon was talking about the undubbed source material, in which the aforementioned problem does not exist.

[up]Look, in my defense, the whole thing was pretty confusing.

What I'm saying is, even if they had digitally changed the text, it still creates the Fridge Logic of why she wrote whatever she did in English. It's trading one thing that doesn't make sense for another.

You do remember that they changed almost everyone's names to usually-similar-sounding English ones, right? Usagi to Serena/Bunny, Ami to Amy, Makoto to Lita, Rei to Raye, and Mamoru Chiba to Darien Shields... it's obvious that they were trying to pretend the location of the story is not Japan, but rather the USA. I think they either call this Creator Provincialism, or it's a Sister Trope to it.

OK, then it's you who brought up the subject of my headcanon's applicability to the redub, which is funny because I never did in my response to that post.

... Also, I have no idea how different the redub is from the old dub from the '90s. When did the redub come out?

The new dub, made by Viz, first came out in 2014. Unlike the first English dub, it keeps the characters' original Japanese names, doesn't cut out or censor scenes like the first dub did, and the dialogue is much more faithfully translated from the original Japanese. It also has a completely new cast of voice actors. As of now, the first 2 seasons have been fully dubbed, and the first half of the third season's dub is available on the DVD/Blu-Ray release.

@Physical Stamina: I'm not sure about the S season, but the first two seasons' dubs have been up for streaming for awhile, and I think they might be available on the Viz website and on Hulu (although that one might need a subscription now).

[up][up]As shown in that clip posted last page, it does not. It just couldn't be bothered to do something like Keep It Foreign to make the scene make sense (presumably because the old dub did it and they wanna distance the new dub from it as much as possible).

I was referring to Neo-Queen Serenity's letter, which you guys say is shown to be still written in Japanese, but the dialogue acts like it's written in English.

Nah, as I was predicting earlier this month, there won't be any streaming of full episodes of the third season's dub this year, but you can still watch all the previous episodes for now.
