Right here, right now, make up the basic idea for a Rom Com anime.

...................

Following a discussion with a friend, we predict that at least half the ideas would be good enough to be bought by a major studio.

Sounds fun. Okay, since I find "harem defiance" HILARIOUS, I'd probably do one about a gynophobic or erotophobic guy that's avoided girl his entire life then, after highschool, goes to college and discovers the male dorms are full. Noting his harmless history via his school medical records, he gets booked in the girls' dorm.

Though I'd definitely work on the believability of that...

^Considering Mayo Chiki exists, you're well within the believability level for an anime romcom.

I would like to see an interesting take on polyamory.

Harem comedies are pretty common. They've obscured some of the 80s-and-earlier romantic comedies, like Kimagure Orange Road and many of the Mitsuru Adachi and Rumiko Takahashi classics.

Related categories such as reverse harem comedy, yaoi comedy, and yuri comedy also exist... though two of the three may be uncommon due to the Girl-Show Ghetto, and all three may be less guaranteed to sell a ton of merchandise. At least that's what I assume...

Anyway, here's an idea: Romantic Comedy x Bromantic Comedy. Two old friends meet. Both of them have a Love Triangle with two girls. At least one of them may have a harem of three or more. The two guys are better at diagnosing each other's problems than they are at figuring out their own. For instance, neither one may be aware how much girls want them.

To make this more interesting, let's say the love interests start talking with each other. The girls make plans to resolve all these tangled relationships. At least one of the girls may be a Yaoi Fangirl. How will the guys react to their plans?

An apocolyptic virus kills every man in the world except for an 18 year (for legal sake) nerdy geek boy from New York who really has no interest in girls and pretty much hates people in general.

He realizes (or some supernatural force/god) tells him it is his duty to pick an "eve" to his "adam" and begin replenishing the world with men.

So it'd be like a really aggressive harem type thing. The whole world wants his seed.

This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?

Behind-the-scenes on the fifth season of a reality-tv matchmaking hit. The director is blowing through the originally-nigh-unlimited budget like the Flash playing the harmonica while his poor abused assistant struggles to rein him in, the bachelor they're trying to pair off is immensely boring until the camera goes on and he puts on the role of the good guy, and at least two of the girls have realized they're more attracted to each other than to him.

:3 And the main character has fallen for the intern they make do the confessional interviews.

How's this: The richest kid in the world is now 15, yet he doesn't know how to handle women. The world caught on and every country sent a representative to be his girlfriend. The twist? the guy's a Bishounen Otaku who is in love with 2d women... An otaku version of The Wallflower.

One that could really only be done in drawn art/animation: All the main characters are some form of Gender Bender of the not yet permanently stuck sort, through various different causes. Some have much less control over their transformations than others (and one was born able to shift, so gender fluidity is their normal state), their amount of The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body is variable, and some change sexual orientation while shifted, some don't.

So the Love Dodecahedron keeps changing shape depending on who's in which phase of their transformations, and the main conflict is trying to come up with a romantic solution that leaves the most people happy at the end.

I'd read Furiko Maru's story.

One idea I've been entertaining myself with is some sort of inverted The World God Only Knows, where the main character is really into otome games — specifically, the princely types therein. He strives to become that sort of character himself while completely oblivious to how obnoxious that sort of behaviour is in real life. (I'm not sure how to work romance into this.)

And if you'll forgive me for another incomplete idea, I've been wanting to see a Distaff Counterpart to the Bromantic Foil in girl-starring romantic comedies. Classically perverted and all. I want to read about girls being ecstatic about seeing their male classmates in swimming trunks or waiter outfits for a change. (Though chances are there's one already and I just haven't looked hard enough.)

Please be gentle with me.

It's kinda hard to think up rom com stuff, now that you got me to think about it.

Well, ok, here goes. So Girl A has a crush on Boy A, but Boy A has a girlfriend whom we'll call Girl B.

One day a guy we'll call Exorcist was hunting down a ghost we'll call... Ghost. Ghost finds it hard to escape Exorcist and happens to see Boy A, and Ghost decides to possess him.

Ghost succeeds, but Girl A sees it happening, because apparently she has some powers too. Ghost tells Girl A that if Exorcist catches him it's highly probable that Boy A will go to the afterlife with him. And so Girl A decides to help Ghost out.

Of course Ghost escapes, and as it turns out, he can't possess Boy A all the time. Ghost makes a deal with Girl A — he'll let Boy A free after he's done saving up his power, and all Girl A has to do is to prevent him from getting caught. He also says that he'll have to manifest from time to time to make sure his consciousness doesn't meld with Boy A's.

Girl A accepts on the condition that the whole affair must be kept strictly secret, adding that if it ever comes to it Ghost will have to act like Boy A, so as to prevent suspicion and any doubts in Boy A's personality, reputation, etc. Especially from Girl B.

Meanwhile, Exorcist gets scolded by his master because as it turns out, Ghost is the special kind of spirit that really will bring its host with it when it gets exorcised. As punishment Exorcist is sent to Girl A and company's school, tasked with finding Ghost and capturing his host so that the proper ritual can be carried out.

Yey for winging it.
