The picture for Fountain of Expies is of Rei Ayanami, a character of which there have been many copies that've shown up in works. With the launch of Rei Ayanami Expy, however, that picture has been appropriated for the latter page, which means that Fountain of Expies is going to need something new.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

We could go with the Superman or Batman clones that have appeared over the years?

[up] I was thinking that Superman expies might be easy to find.

That sounds like a good idea.

The problem with this, now that I think about it, is that appearance expies are a lot easier to do than powers expies...I dunno if we're gonna be able to pull this off as easily as I thought we would.

[up] Well, looking at those three, if I didn't know squat about comics I wouldn't know that they're all super-powerful Flying Bricks without an explanation in the caption.

They all have the same build and giant chest symbols.

@Willbyr: But the point of the page pic would be to demonstrate that one character, Superman, spawned a bunch of look-alikes. We don't need to show pictures of all of them lifting cars or breaking out of chains.

Flying Brick is its own trope, though—one that was at the very least codified by Superman, but simply seeing someone with those powers doesn't say Superman expy. Neither does the cape-and-symbol appearance, since that's so heavily ingrained as "default Superhero" to so many people.

Not only that, but I think it might keep leading to the decay of Expy as any character with superficial similarities to another, if we try to make it clear it's about powers. Superman's sense of responsibility, kindness, and heroism isn't so easy to impart.

If you wanted a superpower expy, it would have to be a Flying Brick with heat vision and Super-Senses at the least.

Captain Marvel is practically the poster boy for Superman rip-offs (and the Ur-Example).

[up][up], [up] But if they came after Superman, look nearly identical to him, and do similar things, then they count as expies.

Identical? He's one of the blandest costumes and builds I've ever seen? Is your definition of "looks like him" more restricted than "blue eyes, black hair, Heroic Build"?

...

So. While this discussion about what makes someone an expy is ongoing, should the current page image be pulled? This could take a while...

Here's a thought...what if we did a 3 x 3 collage, with the first column being three different source characters and the next two spaces in each row showing an expy for the first character?
