Surely Otaku culture is one of the worst things about Japan?

I'd just like to say that the OP calling it the only good thing about Japan was clearly just an attention-grabber. >_> He probably meant no offence by it, although he could have avoided the method entirely.

And wow, there's a lot of censorship in the world these days.

Most lolicon material are non-profit doujins sold at comiket where the bill won't touch it. Only 3 materials were affected, one of them managed to barely finish...

And since Kodomo No Jikan is still running, most published lolicon material is still fine.

Also, anime/manga isn't the only good thing about japan.......they also have whaling, giant hornets*

, collectivism, and non-retarded education!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoku#1950s.2F60s

Shintaro Ishihara's 1950s novel Season of the Sun gave rise to a reckless and carefree expression of youth which became stylised in subsequent films as taiyo zoku (sun tribe). This subculture had some parallels with the rocker and greaser subcultures being promoted by Hollywood films such as Rebel without a Cause. Traditional Japanese considered the post-war taiyo zoku violent and promiscuous.

Reminds me of Reagan. wink

Other than that I don't think I should care about a mayor in Japan, unless mayors had the same clout as legislators.

[up] Mayor of Tokyo actually important. Its like being governor of California or Texas in United States. its have population number, that any rule created in them could significantly affect area outside. it's called "Govern Japan From Tokyo". beside if you are anime/manga fans, significant number of Studio/Artist live in Tokyo.

As has been said, I'm sure our friends in Japanland have more pressing things to worry about than what the Mayor of Tokyo thinks about cartoons. Although I admit he seems like a bit of doucher what with the denial of Nanking and his comments about the earthquake. In fact, it's a little telling that people here are more worried about the fact that he hates their precious Animu than that he's a racist and not a very nice guy besides.

Oh, I could go on and on about how much of an awful person Ishihara is, but this topic is specifically on the fail bill that failed.

That, and I'm kind of too lazy to type up a wall of text summing up my views on Ishihara, though "racist homophobic hypocrite motherfucking bastard" is a good way to shorten it, I suppose.

Have an animation studio make an Anime based off one of Ishihara's works.

Of course they would elect a hypocrite that would go, "KTHX, now I'm going to restrict the kinds of things that I indulged in when I was younger to protect you kids! grin"

It would seem that politics really isn't all that different the world over. :(

Japan has a lot of stuff that isn't Video Games and/or anime/manga.

Shintaro Ishihara sounds like the Fred Phelps or Pat Robertson of Japan.

I mean, look at his track record:

  • He said that otakus (that is, anyone who opposed his anti-manga bill) are genetically defective
  • He has said that homosexuals are genetically defective and "pitiful"
  • He has stated that "mangaka are despicable people"
  • Has said that young people "have no culture"
  • Wants to ban the internet
  • Says that horrific crimes in Japan are usually committed by "sangokujin" ("third-party national", meaning "illegal immigrant", an offensive term)
  • Said that the Rape of Nanking was "a fiction"
  • Said that he believed "old women who live after they have lost their reproductive function are useless and are committing a sin," adding that he "couldn't say this as a politician." He was criticized for these comments, but responded that the criticism was driven by "tyrant… old women."
  • Justified the destruction of a forest by saying that "devil forests eat children"
  • Said that the 2011 earthquake and tsunami were examples of "divine punishment" for what he considers to be Japan's greed
  • And yet he's also a complete hypocrite. He writes novels about rape that would make the Marquis de Sade blush.
  • And he even said that French was unqualified to be an international language!

Luckily, most people have ignored anything he tries to do to those efforts because there's pretty much no way he can enforce it.
