Wick Migration

Go To

Some tropers (myself included) have been moving works from the Main/ namespace to the appropriate namespace. Unfortunately, some of these moves were done without the wicks being corrected to reflect the new namespaces.

There are more wicks than any one person could handle, so I'm posting here in hopes of getting help. Here is a list of pages that have been moved and need their wicks corrected. (Let me know if you spot any others, and I'll add them to the list.)

EDIT: The list has been moved to Administrivia.Wick Namespace Migration.

Add completed moves in Completed Namespace Migrations.

How do you move the crowning moment pages? I'm switching over Deus Ex: Human Revolution to the Video Game namespace, but I can't figure that out.

On the left side of the page, go to "Tools" and change the page type to "work". The sub-pages will show up automatically. (Looks like someone has already done that.) The only exception is ptitle pages, which need everything moved manually.

Liberated Liberater: I've added Fate Stay Night and Puella Magi Madoka Magica to the list.

I'm not sure how to move liveblogs, and I can't find any information about it anywhere. I'll ask on Wiki Talk.

Blur has wicks needing to be moved to either Music.Blur or VideoGame.Blur. The mainspace page is now a disambiguation.

Why are we moving these pages out of the main namespace (to me this seems like creating a whole lot of work for very little gain)? Last time I remember checking, it seemed like the consensus was against moving them.

Because we want to reserve the main Namespace for tropes. It helps people get into the habit of referring to it if there's multiple adaptions.

Except we still don't have official namespaces to even move a lot of pages to (I've got something like six pages I could move rather quickly if I actually knew where the heck to move them to), and we keep having to check back and re-clean up wicks because casual editors don't read the forums and thus don't monitor all the moves, among other issues. It's not a very well-organized project at the moment as a result.

We've got Name Space, Eddie just needs to put in the proper icons/coding.

Which doesn't have all the namespaces needed.

I have five Multiple Media work pages I could move, but no namespace currently listed that would be appropriate. And I can move The Silver Lining too, except that again, there's no appropriate namespace for fangames.

Fangames don't have their own namespace, they're simply Videogames. What are the works in question?

...why would fangames be in Video Games/, when we're very clear about fanfics being in Fan Fic/ and not Literature/? That seems... inconsistent (and too easy to mistake fangames for official works).

And, the works in question would be Transformers Timelines and its four related original series. (Granted, arguably Timelines is actually a franchise... which we don't have a namespace for yet either.)

Because Fan Fic was a stupid idea, it should have been "web literature". Fan Work isn't a medium, it's a classification. Unfortunately, our "mediums" aren't well laid out because they're not based on real logic. Transformers Timelines looks like it belongs in main, simply because it's a cross media Expanded Universe.

I prefer having fanwork separate, personally, even though it's technically not a medium. Partly so it doesn't get mistaken for being official work, and partly because it has its own distinct medium-like tropes. But that's a debate for a different thread, really.

And, I thought only tropes belonged in Main/? wink Plus, Timelines is only partly Expanded Universe, the rest of it is several original series. (It's kind of confusing, but Transformers isn't like Star Trek or Star Wars, it's structured more like, say, the Marvelverse or DCverse but with more thematically similar series.)

Plus that doesn't answer what to do with the other pages, which technically qualify as Comic Book/, Literature/, Web Original/, and Magazine/ all at the same time. (Oh, and LiveActionPerformance/, if it existed.)

So turn the various medium spaces into indexes of the works. X Men does that, you just put the specific titles on the appropriate Namespace.

Um, what? Each page is a single work page that fits into multiple namespaces, not an index of multiple work pages.

Like, say, with Transformers Wings Of Honor, the first part of the work is a comic issue, the second part is a short downloadable prose story, the third is a magazine-based serial comic, the fourth is another prose story, the fifth is another magazine serial, the sixth is another comic issue.

Those parts aren't separate works; they're all just multiple parts of the same whole work, similar to how you don't make separate work pages for individual episodes that are the multiple parts of a TV series or individual issues that are the multiple parts of a comic series.

So, needless to say, I have no idea whatsoever which namespaces to put the work pages in, because they're all like that.

I was too... but I admit I'd like some official word for any new namespaces we make, so we can have consistency.

Now that I think about it, some of the Extended Universe articles would probably qualify for that namespace too, as a lot of them span stuff like literature, video games, and comics.

Maybe Multimedia/ as a sort of "main" page pointing to all the others?

Sounds like something we haven't decided yet. I'd hold off on moving pages like that until we can come to a solid consensus on how to treat them; for now, we should focus our efforts on the ones we've already decided on, like Theatre/ and Videogame/ and Literature/.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

[up] I guess my gripe is, nobody seems to be interested in deciding that. When it really kind of needs to be done if we're going to be serious about this project.
