I would argue that no, Light has a supernatural book which he uses to kill people. He might think he fights crime, but he is treated in the work as a Well-Intentioned Extremist Serial Killer.

Pretty sure Death note is covered under the Supernatural Thriller genre.

Which we oddly don't have a trope page for even though I see it in book stores and movies stores all the time.

Urban Fantasy is often combined with Paranormal Investigation as well.

Seems pretty clear, I still think using the word Modern is a bit dubious but it works I guess.

Technically "modern" encapsulates all the way back to 17th century, there are just like, no works in the genre that take place that far back, not that they necessarily can't, they just don't.

Still when I hear modern I think post 1985 and I think that's very common among people.

I certainly don't think just post-1985 when I think "modern", but I don't include the 17th century there either. It's kind of a fluid term.

I can't think of any better way to put it - I just feel like "modern" is a bit ambiguous.

I just say we hottip in a range for what we mean by modern.

Which leads to the question, What is modern?

Well, pre-1985 is really the Historical Fantasy subgenre of Urban Fantasy and that has it's own page. Those works should really go there.

Well according to the Historical Fantasy page that genre sort of implies more than just historical time period, but yeah i think generally speaking the cut off is early 19th century (1800s) to present day. not because things couldn't happen earlier, but because there are just like no works that even vaguely qualify as Urban Fantasy that take place in that no-man's land of Renaissance to Colonial Era.

(I would so love to read any kind of fantasy that takes place in more of a Renaissance time-period. I'm so over high Middle Ages.)

What about urban fantasy works form that those eras though? Like the 60's had quite a few sitcoms and soaps that could be called Urban Fantasy as did the 70's.

Give explicit examples and lets see.

Munsters was pretty much urban fantasy, as was the Adams family. Neither had the real fear factor to be horror. Dark Shadows blurs the line between this and horror.
