I think not being so socially outgoing makes it easy for us to sit back and watch others make friends with people we'd love to get to know but simply can't approach in a way that signals we'd like to be friends. Which is no fun at all.
What would a friend/loved one/relative have to do before you'd break ties with them? How bad would it have to be?

I find that Eliezer Yudkowsky has a pretty original approach to his stories. Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality was really enjoyable, and his short stories are really interesting. I loved the way Three Worlds Collide introduced metaethical problems. I love modern speculative fiction in general, especially with that playful touch. Another example from a different author is Friendship Is Optimal.
