  • Shrunken in Super Mario Bros with no [?] Block in sight? stand around for a few moments and you'll grow back. Maxes out at Super, though.
  • Fighting games will consist mostly of keep away, and ended with a Sergio Leone-esque stare down on behalf of both players, before the timer forces both players to scramble and graze one another to steal the win.

yes, this is something of a forum game.

Lets keep this classy, gentlemen. This is just for fun. It is not a complaint thread, so lets keep it that way.

Losing in a racing game? Just wait a moment and the game will slingshot you back into a tie with the first place car, because its more 'fair' that way.

Turn-based RP Gs: The Guard command heals 25% of your HP and MP, and can be upgraded to remove Status Effects! Healers are worthless in this game!

RTS games? Lose half of your army? Don't worry, wait a minute and get all 200 units back!

Actually would be great for 'Nids, Guard, and Orks in the Dawn of War games.

  • Mega Man X boss fights will encourage the player to jump hug the wall if he's in trouble. While he recovers, he should take care to avoid earthquake-esque moves if he doesn't want to be knocked off his perch and caught off guard.
  • Moves like Fly and Dig will give the attacking Pokemon a bonus health boost depending on his Special ranking.

[up][up][up][up][up] There have been fighting games with the second mechanic (I forget which). They pretty much turn out as you described.

  • Mech simulators with self repair would have infinitely long missions unless it was balanced properly. The AI could also cheat by timing repairs perfectly or having infinite stocks of nanites or w/eva.

@Thorn: Actually, I played this one Arcade-y racer once where your car could take damage, but it would recover from the damage, the damaged parts un-crumpling while making sounds similar to a soda can.

(EDIT: The name of it is Jeff Gordon XS Racing, for context.)

I actually implemented a form of Regenerating Health in my Yuri's Revenge mod. Infantry of all kinds automatically self-heal (and not a pittance amount per cycle) and building a repair building grants self heal to all War Factory units and ships. (That's much slower than using the repair building's innate repair pad.)

It makes for interesting gameplay. (And amusing balance designs since I have to account for that if say I want a certain weapon to kill a target within so many hits over a certain amount of time.) Yes I'll admit such design skews the viable strategies heavily in favor of fully mechanized forces (especially IFV types that infantry can shoot out of and hybridized tank/artillery divisions) but it makes for fun gameplay knowing that you don't necessarily have to pull back to base to repair Scratch Damage.

Hell, that would play right into most smash players strategy, seeing how much they like to dash back and forth and hang on the edge. My head hurts trying to comprehend how horrible that would be. The best way to be stalling flops is too ignore them, but with regenerating health the matches would take even longer to finish and since every dildo insist on playing stock mode instead of time... tripping wouldn't just be funny, it'd be necessary. We'd probably need air tripping too in order to stop gliders like Charizard, Meta Knight and Pit.

Then again, Super Smash Bros already has a regenerating shield, so its kind of like Halo's regenerating already...as they don't implement something like Halo 2's and beyond.

Fire Emblem: that Final Death? I Got Better.

^Actually, the standard is stock with time limit, though in that case most matches would be draws. Also, admittedly, the stalling you've mentioned has only shown to be a problem in Brawl...

Hmm, come to think of it, regenerating health would be terrible in just about any fighting game.

Belief or disbelief rests with you.

Starcraft2 already uses regenerating health (by which I assume you mean very quickly but only when you're not being shot at) for the Protoss shields.

A lot of RP Gs have you healed to full after every battle. Honestly, I like that mechanic better than the alternative. It adds a lot more strategy when each fight has a reasonable chance to kill you as opposed to being absolutely trivial but slowly draining your resources.

As for the proposed "gain health back when guarding" mechanic from an early post, Legend Of Dragoon had that and I thought it was sort of interesting. Healing was sort of rare in that game, what with the terrible inventory size, so you kinda had to rely on it. And enemies did enough damage that this didn't trivialize the fights, unless you did nothing else. Also, why include MP? The FPS mechanic that's being copied doesn't give you free ammo for sitting around.

Regenerating health replaces medikit scrounging. It does not replace challenge.

[up][up]Yes it does. Getting to the health packs is often the challenge. Managing the health packs is often the challenge.

Keeping controlling the ground where health packs spawn, or if the spawn randomly, debating on whether to save them for when needed or just grab so the enemy can't is part of the appeal of multi player. And so is putting landmines under the health packs.
