Well, Cygan was wondering why there wasn't one, so I made it. I guess we can talk about queer stuff. :3

Oh, and if you're wondering, non-queer folks are welcome too.

I'm not the biggest fan of headcanoning orientations and identities personally.

I headcanon every so often with identities and orientation and such, but I'm not too huge on it.

[up]x6. What's the harm? As long as the depictions aren't stereotypes or harmful, they're not hurting anyone. For people who barely get any representation, headcannoning that characters are like you can be very comforting. As long as you don't force your headcannons onto others.

I only headcanon popular headcanons, such as the one where Lars and Fluttershy is trans. And even those theories have reasons that make sense within the canon.

Really, I see no harm in headcanoning as long as you don't, like, try to force it on others or act like it's actually 100% canon.

@media depictions: Butch lesbians actually have little to no representation now. Somewhere along the line, straight people began to think we're a stereotype rather than a part of lesbian subculture. As a result, any masculine women are likely to be straight in order to "smash stereotypes", which has pissed off butch women. Now we only really get more feminine lesbians in media.

Part of why so many people want Zarya to be explicitly confirmed as gay in Overwatch is so we can have a super awesome butch lesbian who kicks ass.

And then you sometimes have people thinking that it's more progressive to make someone who seems stereotypically gay straight.

On a positive note, I just saw Firebringer, that new musical by Team Starkid, and it had bi people, and it didn't kill them off. And portrayed them rather positively.

I mean, is there anything explicitly hinting that Zarya is gay, or is that just the fanon's headcanon?

She's really, really butch, and has some flirty pre match dialogue with Mei.

iirc, it's something along the lines of

"Zarya, how do you stay warm while wearing so little?"

"Give me your coat and I'll show you!"

I mean, does being butch automatically equate to being gay now, because that kind of seems like a stereotype.

I mean

Butch became a 'stereotype' because it was a really widely-used identifier by a lot of lesbians. So it's a stereotype in the way that like, black people with dark skin is a stereotype.

But in Overwatch's case there's also the fact that the creator's said from the beginning that there were on-or-more LGBT characters. Given Zarya's appearance, especially considering how it's even more pointedly unfeminine to the Russian mindset, makes her a kind of obvious choice.

Yeah, there's really not a way to not be stereotypical as a gay or lesbian person. Feminine lesbian? Then you're just conforming to the stereotypes of your gender. Masculine lesbian? Then you're just another stereotypical gay person.

Butch lesbians (like myself) are a big section of lesbian subculture. It's partly a way to show others how we identify, wearing our sexuality on our sleeves (thats definitely not the only reason though).

This whole "butch lesbians are a stereotype" thing is a misconception caused by straight people not understanding lesbian subculture. You can't mentions femmes, butches, studs, fine studs, or any other kind of lesbian without people getting confused.

I'm just saying, do butch straight women not exist? Plus, Zarya could just as easily be bi or pan, or anything in between those two.

I'm now trying to think of confirmed Butch Lesbian characters in current media.

I think the best you get is Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer, but only if you make them into one. Of course, most of what I watch is mainstream.

Almost everyone I know who wants zarya to be a butch lesbian, are butch lesbians. So there isn't really stereotyping going on, but people who see themselves in someone, and want that representation.

Edit: Sorry, read Toriel's thing as aromantic for some reason; the point still stands about the implication I said.

Plus the implication that literally everything in the Underground isn't straight in any form, which just makes it sound like every straight, cisgendered human just locked up everything else on the spectrum under a mountain.

To add to the "butch lesbians are stereotypes" discussion, I've noticed that even though a lot of people say that, there really aren't a lot of butch lesbians in media. Most TV lesbians are pretty femme. Like lakingsif said, Alex Danvers is the closest to butch that I know of. (Maggie, too, I guess, but she's considerably less butch than in the comics, so IDK.)

Trust you? The only person I can trust is myself.

I'd like Zarya to be lesbian to serve as a big middle finger to Russia and their gay propaganda laws.
