I find it looks very bland myself.

That flag is a bit better Rachel but that's mostly because it ain't a straight up normal "x" complete with straight lines.

Seriously, suddenly I feel a lot better about some of the Brazillian state flags.

Worst is without a doubt São Paulo's though.

Ireland's crests for the 32 counties are pretty standard, nothing to write home about, but I quite like the flags of the four provinces especially Leinster (bottom right).

I've had a rather peculiar experience with reenactments. Last week's reenactment of the Battle of Waterloo (which had about 150 000 men) was a rather standard "Look! Explosions! Charges! Epic Action!" reenactment, with the War Is Hell aspect sort of tacked on at the end. Meanwhile, last year's pageant (yeah, pageant- there was hardly any fighting in it at all) commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lundy's Lane (which had about 6000 men) completely revved up the War Is Hell angle, so when you compare the depictions side by side, Lundy's Lane seemed worse than Waterloo, despite the latter battle being 24 times larger.

A Game of Thrones Season 5 episode made me wonder:

Can a king legitimize a bastard of his servant?

Probably. He's the king, he can do whatever.

dRoy: Good question. I imagine there is nothing stopping said king if the king needs an heir badly enough.

A king can if he authorizes it - there are some kings who found a servant had a bastard and legitimized them because the servant is loyal, and he wants to reward loyalty.

There's also a few cases where it's done because the father or mother of the bastard is particularly intelligent, and see fit that the child should be given the best education they can and made into an adviser, or perhaps a regent of some sort. Edward the Third had a regency council, and some of those on the council included various sons of advisers and old advisers themselves.

Interesting, I guess that makes sense.

Anyways I know flags was a while back but these are ours http://www3.sympatico.ca/goweezer/canada/cansymbols.htm

Sorry for the website with the eye-searing background. You may notice that Manitoba and Ontario flags look very similar apparently this is because both of them decided to protest the then new maple leaf flag by keeping the old red ensign, and I guess figured once it was set they shouldn't change it?

Random thought.

Those who thinks that Christianity has done nothing but hindering the progress of science, especially during the Middle Ages, clearly haven't read their European history text.

Not that I have, at any rate. XP

Yeah, the "Christian Dark Ages" are pretty much a discredited idea in serious historical circles.

As far as the flag debate goes. I like the various Liberian county flags.

Back in World War II, was it true only commissioned officers within the Imperial Japanese Army wielded swords, or were non-commissioned officers and enlisted allowed to do so too?
