What's everyone's favourite peice of technology that is now just a pipe dream but, if successfully mass-produced, will take the world one step closer to The Future!? (Answers based solely on how cool something looks will be accepted.)

Mine:

  • Vehicles that run on things other than petrol or diesel. Regardless of your opinions on the reasons why these are getting more popular, you have to admit it's really cool that people are testing out new ways of powering our stuff.
  • Those VTOL-looking toy things you can remote control with your iPod Touch. Can robotic hover-drones be far away?!
  • Basically any technology that South Korea is working on. South Korea is the friggin' future, man.
  • I read this story about some doctors who took a tooth out of a blind man's mouth and somehow used it to make him see again. That is so awesome.
  • The Tesla Roadster.

[up]Have you seen some of those Japanese suits for the elderly and for people who can't walk? Because clearly, Japan is trying to turn their surplus old people into Iron Man.

Replicators. Not just for the "hey, I can use this to get free unlimited pudding!" angle, but also because I'm honestly curious what effect replicators would have on society.

But somehow,

My favourite? I'm using it right now. Modern computers would have screamed "futuristic" at the people of 30 years ago. A hundred times more powerful than the super computers of the era, and far more versatile.

For something currently under development, volumetric 3D display devices, quantum computing, and the Space Elevator.

Accidental mistakes are forgivable, intentional ones are not.

[up] I agree that most of the technology we already have, like smart phones and super computers and ipods, are incrediable to me. But I'm looking forward to the more practical stuff; automated traffic, ever-increasing medical knowledge improving our lives and health even more, and robotic waiting-staff.

Plus space tourism.

Those prolific wristband computers with the interactive holographic displays that are in a ridiculous amount of sci-fi works.

...I'd also like to live the dream that is Star Trek. Phasers, tricorders, transporters oh my!

Cybernetic Upgrades, specifically the ones that would allow you to connect to the internet with your head. Oh and machine-gun equipped prosthetic arms.

It will be a sad day for science if I can't turn myself into a unstoppable killbot by 2045.

Giant bipedal robots.

And before you say how impractical they'd be as military weapons, let me say that there's nothing stopping one from pitting two or more against each other in an arena. I know I'd pay to see one chainsaw a stack of cars in half.

FTL travel. Failing that, quantum entanglement so we can stick an entangled particle in a probe and have a shot at the most awesome penpals the world has ever seen.

FTL travel is one of those things where I don't actually mind if we never get it, but I hope we always try to find a way, because it really drives some interesting discussions.

Personally, I think the best "future" technologies are the really impractical ones. Like shoe phones!

Reminds me of how I'd read my mom's ancient copy of The Book Of Knowledge (circa late 1950s) and marvel at how they did things the hard way back then, and how SCIENCE!! was THE FUTRUE OMG.

Also, I learned about the International Geophysical Year from the old Compton's at my grandparents' house. I didn't know until later that one of my favorite songs from when I was like 5 was also named that. :D
