Because it appeals to the fanatical sorts.
I don't understand what about it brings out so much emotion in people.

Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows. No Kodomin, I didn't make this to spite you.
Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! ~ GODMaybe because it's fun? The main 3D games have been in a rut, but the series as a whole has always been popular.
What he said, basically.
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows. So, it's popular because it's popular?
That doesn't exactly help. It's just that I've never understood Sonic's huge popularity, such that there are jokes about it on deviant art.

That's essentially what Geltonz thinks.

People find what's basically canon Sonic recolours interesting and appealing?

Also.
miru and his fetish for Bat titties.
I'm having to learn to pay the priceIt's popular because it's fun. The original games were very good and competed with Mario before the series hit the Polygon Ceiling. And even after that, the handhelds have been doing good and the spinoffs were received relatively well. They fared average, at least.
Different people will have different opinions on when the 3D console platformers in the series started going downhill. Personally I think it was Heroes. It peaked with the 2006 game, but Unleashed was the start of lots of improvement and Colors is almost universally liked.
Oh, and saying the characters are a cast full of recolors is very hyperbolic. The only recolor is Shadow, really. Silver too if you want to broaden the scope.

Wait, what does that mean?
He's probably talking about how the younger fans want "mature" storylines like in Shadow the Hedgehog and older fans tend to want simpler plots.
I hate this idiotic perception of maturity and childishness. Shadow the Hedgehog is probably the most childish game in the series, because it tries to be adult by means of constant swearing and cliche grittiness.
Shadow the Hedgehog is also by extension the most entertaining of the series cutscene wise because of that. Oh god...that and the acting. FUCKING PRICELESS. I still want to pretend that it was all an elaborate fuck you to people who wanted more "mature" Sonic. BUT IT IS LIKELY NOT. It would be awesome if it was though.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI liked the game, but it was still obviously trying to appeal to kids with a warped perspective on maturity. Sonic Adventure had a relatively mature plot. Shadow the Hedgehog was mature by the standards of young teenagers who think swearing and using guns is a rite of passage.

Some of us just really liked the games when we were kids.
A pointlessly emo plot lines...
Poor Shadow.

that bugs me.
DoodlesI actually liked the plot of the game. I'm probably one of the few who did. It was the hammed-up writing and overdone grittiness that made it narmy.
Why would Sonic of all things, have such an enormous fandom? It's not annoying, just weird.
Why?
(I needed to make a legitimate thread you know.)
