Tales Series

From what I heard Tales of Heart's R translation is not showing good signs in all the trailers, anyone here have any ideas what that's about?

Everyone speaks like they don't have a tongue?

The English VA for Magnius in Tales of Symphonia is doing ALL the voice work?

Everyone has a noticeable stutter?

The translation is effectively broken English at best?

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or seriously asking that.

Sarcasm. I forget what happens here when you don't do this.

They're not doing a dub, and the translation seems somewhat...bland or workmanlike with the occasional awkward word choice. We haven't really seen that much of it, and what we have may have just been slapped together for the trailer.

so its basically a boring straight translation, hm? Kinda a shame.

What I've seen suggests the opposite actually. The translation takes a few liberties that don't really work with subtitles when the game doesn't have a dub. For instance, in the scene where they fight the sandworm, Hisui is collected ad determined, but the english subtitles have him cracking jokes and confusing his own choice of words. He has no such issue in Japanese.

Then, there's Amethyst. Amethyst is like Yeager in the Japanese version, where he inserts incomprehensible English in his Japanese. With his flower motif, love for whips and silly clothing, you'd expect him to use some Spanish if there wasa dub, but the subtitles only gave him a bit of flowery prose.

Oh, and I'm not sure why, but the arte translation is a bit off. Hisui doesn't have any Mosquito Hawk artes. His moves are bird-themed, not bugged.

So why hasn't the Tales Series deconstructed Tsundere yet?

They've gone after Idiot Hero and The Messiah, and recently, they did Manipulative Bastard and Chronic Back Stabbing Disorder, but not Tsundere? Why the hell not? It really needs it if you ask me.

Also, what plots and character types have they deconstructed as well? I'd like to know more, though this is mostly curiosity.

May not be a deconstruction, but the fact that Rita's attitude makes the other mages view her as being incredibly weird at best, and the fact that she's friendless to the point that she assigns personalities to the things she studies is probably worth mentioning.

they SERIOUSLY need to, because in most bad flavour-of-the-month anime, generic tsunderes get away with way too much and win relationships way too often. I don't see why Tsunderes are so special that they get to avoid this.

That would be interesting to see. But we've kinda been over this topic before...

@ the above doods: Well, they already have deconstructed Tsundere... with Luke. Even though he is a male, him becoming friendless (at least for a while) is what would happen to a RL tsundere if s/he were too tsun-tsun. Only when the universe slapped his face did Luke become a lot more dere-dere (but don't say he became emo! That's because of another issue.)

Rita is a half-done job. She does not even know that her attitude scares away potential new friends. Until Estelle happened, because she is Estelle. That kind of people NEEDS friends, but neither party wants to take the first step. (Man up! I defrosted a RL tsundere myself!)

@ Kombat: Yep, I don't know about you, but I am still butthurt that Kei/Saito didn't get with Mutsumi/Siesta, who are 9001% better than Naru/Louise. First Girl Wins in full effect. But don't think they get Main Female inmunity: sometimes being part of the Love Dodecahedron is enough.

When I thought Harem Animes could not avoid the issue, I had to find Lala Deviluke. She is the foil to all of the world's Narus % Louises. And she pushes a lot of my buttons: Veeery clingy, socially dumb yet mechanically a genius, has issues keeping her clothes on, killer body without being comically curvy, heir to a superpowerful overlord... damm it. This is not the place to talk. I'll shut up.

While I wait for my partner to flip a coin and decide if he gets Xillia 2 or Vesperia PS 3 next, I saw some interesting Game FAQS topics:

• Why did people hate Xillia 1: Cut content, felt incomplete, rehashed areas, no puzzles, no Sorcerer Ring, practically no in-game costumes, no cameo battle, no minigames, only six characters, villains not explained, barren Elympios (only a town and 2 dungeons!) subpar AI options...

• Would you have bought Symphonia HD on Wii U?: No interest in the Tales Series / I disliked Symphonia in particular / Totally hated the sequel / Is dated-ugly / I already own one-both...

Come on, fellow Nintendrones. Seriously? That's why you have scared Namco away regarding the Tales Series! Yet Wind Waker HD has sold very well... (I have to admit, it's true that mostly everyone who wanted either game already got it 5/10 years ago... because RPG starvation.)

Still butthurt on barren Elympios myself. The jazz, the dark sky, the steam-punk asthetics, would've been a joy to explore more.

On the topic of unrelated tsunderes, while I agree Siesta shoulda won the Saitob owl, I'm actually quite fine with Naru(But Motoko would've been a nice ending as well). She is THE quintessential violent tsundere and I have a soft spot for her.

And I can totally see Luke as a tsundere.

Also Naru and Louise can all burn in fucking hell, they were nothing short of disgusting. I may hate NGE but at least that damn thing acknowledged that Asuka was legit fucked up in the head.

Considering Rita solves 90% of the plot by herself (Yuri might as well not be there), the game doesn't really do anything against her tsundereness.

Slight Hearts spoilers: the scene where Amber regains her courage is awesome. The anime cutscene really does it justice. Kunzite is kind of weird. He's very no nonsense and emotionless. Also kinda rude, but he should open up. He's prolly the slowest character overall.

I'm trying to identify the gem names, but the katakana sometimes makes me hit a blank. Marin is Aquamarine, Richea is Lithea and Spodune is probably based on Spodumene, but what is Cornelpin? Seriously, Hearts and your rock names.

I've officially ordered Legendia. Really looking forward to playing it. Aiming to finish Milla's side of Xillia first, since it'll be a little while before it gets here.

Also, more on topic...Hearts looks really good, but I don't have a Vita. If I did, I'd totally get it when it comes out.

and I finished Lloyd and Colette's story on Tales of VS. I remember a side scene with Richter and Barbatos, and Senel going apeshit and sinking a boat Lloyd and Colette were on.

Mmm, the closest I can think is Asbel-Cheria, who had Sophie around to go DONT FIGHT PLEASE BE FRIENDS if the quarrel got out of hand. We need more chars like Sophie. (^_^)

Because FAQS. Thread the forums with caution, though. That's why my partner is wary of asking anything in the internets. (*old man voice* Ah, remember when you had to buy 5-6 issues of a game magazine to get a game's strategy guide?)

People tolerate Rita because she solves the plot and is a goddess of war. Overlimit turns her from Best DPH to Best Damage Period. Estelle, YOU should scold her! (Is there a fanfiction where she does? Or Karol returns her smacks?)

Hearts have rock names for their humans, plant names for the Zerom based bosses and fairy tale references on the town's names. I am sure you noticed. (Also, the tower where Kohak regains her Courage Spirune is King's Cross.)

@ Sapphire: Good choice. Unique and charming graphic engine. Marvelous music. Fantastic cast with lots of development. Beautiful world setting. Interesting plot. The only bad point is... the actual gameplay.

Slow battles with basically no air game, stiff animations, monsters have 4-5 pallete swaps each, 90% of bosses have no strategy beyond 'hit it until it dies'... and OH GOD THE BACKTRACKING. It is even worse than Abyss. Noob advice:

• Senel is a brawler, Chloe is a fencer. Main her if you are used to other swordmen like Lloyd, Luke and etc, but I found Senel's knockdowns + throws very fun. Your choice. Jay has a 'ninja' arte list, but joins pretty late. Moses works like an archer, but is much harder to play.
• Your mages (Will, Norma, Grune and Shirley) learn not their actual spells via level up, but their recipes. Get a certain amount of monster drops to actually learn them. Norma is the best healer with Revive. Grune is very Dark/Water oriented: situationally good.
• The mob encounter rate is ridiculous, but try to bear it without Holy Bottles. You will need the levels. (Try to clear any Dark Zone you come across too.)
• After the first credits roll, the arena opens. Get in and win the Extreme Symbol from the Singles Battle ASAP. The second half of the game is full of HP tanks, and the above accesory ups your strenght (but lowers both defenses) so that it cuts battle times dramatically.
• All puzzles in the game are in self-contained rooms, and best of all, you can SKIP them. If you clear them all you get a title, but this game's titles only give a flat stat boost instead of better growths like Symphonia or passive effects like Abyss. Best to ignore puzzles on a first run.
• Please give Shirley a chance. She gets better.

Yeah, Sophie doesn't look too bad.

Also on the plus side beating Lloyd and Colette's TOVS story unlocked Kratos and Cless for me. Bad news is I gotta start buffing them two as well. I've already overlevelled Lloyd (And Kyle too) beforehand.

I finished Milla's side of Xillia on the weekend in time for Xillia 2's release next week. I really prefer Jude's side. And unless I throw endless amounts of hours into the game, there's no way I'll Platnium it, so I'll settle for 80% or so.

Sounds about right. I kinda wish there was a story translation for VS though. It did make me appreciate Kyle more.

Bah, best damage is still Yuri Lowlbrokenell. Rita's got no combination skills or giant doom feather for millions of damage. She's definitely best crowd control though.

The scene with Shing and Amber in the desert is adorable. The anime stills are cute. @__@ Hisui has turned more siscon than ever. "You're not becoming my brother, Shing, ya get it! Hands off Amber!" Oh, and Garnet is evil. I can't believe he's voiced by Kenyuu Horiuchi, aka Geyorkias and Pain. Should have seen the villainness coming. All red gems in Hearts are evil.
