Uh, why was it called The Dauphin?
Coz the girl is the heir to her planet's throne.
I wish it was called "The Dolphin." I think it would've been much more entertaining.
Is not impressed. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish: the Next Generation.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three. It's what "The Dauphin" means in French (The Dolphin). But it's also the term for the heir to the throne of France due it Dolphins being on the coat of arms of the heir.
Weren't they actually going to have uplifted dolphins as part of the Enterprise crew on TNG at one point?
Is not impressed. They did. They are in the technical manual, and are mentioned in an episode (La Forge take someone to see the Cetacean tanks on the Enterprise, I believe its in "the Perfect Mate")
IIRC even Chuck made a joke about it in his review.

Yep, just before the 3 minute mark.
Dolphins and whales are one of those ideas from The '80s that should have never seen the light of day. I'm picturing a dolphin in a TNG starfleet uniform with a combadge looking like a bad Lisa Frank work....
All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be a case on The First 48I dunno... I think he can pull it off...◊
Is not impressed.Bounty Hunters is up early, and apparently Chuck is keeping his site from imploding by sheer force of will. Any idea why he got targeted so heavily?

Assholes with alot of Freetime
... Janeway
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!Ya know Obi-wan's weird mix signals at Sugi make alot more sense if Obi secretly wants to ride that Zabrak booty.
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole! That Bounty Hunter episode does highlight one of the issue with Star Wars, that the Jedi philosophies don't ever make sense.
"We're guardians of the peace. Except when we're not. People should learn to defend themselves".
Always found it funny that Jedi are the only people who carry a weapon who can only ever kill or maim. Even stormtrooper blasters have a stun setting. It's what leads us to moments like Obi Wan cutting off a drunk's arm coz the drunk is mouthing off at him.
The problem is GL himself doesn't really seem to get what the Jedi's philosophy is or he has no real HARD code for it.
since he is for the most part aping Samurai and Western Knights codes of honor and conduct not really getting that at points trying to merge the two into a singular philosophy and forgets that in some instances the two contradict the other.
Hence why you'll get that people must stand up for themselves... and Jedi are suppose to protect the weak, helpless and downtrodden and since GL is so fast and loose with the philosophy you'll have other people interpret it
The other issue is, Its a homage of Seven Samurai and they tried to keep various pieces of that in it. too an extent Obi's wierd pack and forth is the writer struggling to have Obi character and the Samurai he's suppose to allude to separate.
Example, Teaching the Locals to fight
Yes Anakin seems stupid to try and train the local to fight but lets be honest thats The Art designers fault making said locals look like a bunch of guys that a stray wind can take out. though Remember Anakin's a Former Slave use to standing up to Aliens Three times his size. Standing up for yourself is kinda hard pressed into him.
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!Yeah but Anakin was an owned slave. Said aliens couldn't slap him around because they'd have to pay his owner for the damages.
And it's the writers who decided to go "Let's have the farmers learn to use shovels for defense. and let's give the bad guy a motherfucking tank!!!!!"
Maybe an EMP would have been a good idea. You know, level the playing field.
It might have worked better if the farmers were under attack by, say, a large number of local raiders who didn't have much in the way of blasters.
Of course, if that was the case, one might think that the bounty hunters could handle it by themselves.
Oh God! Natural light! They just wanted Hondo in the episode XD
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!I've never seen the dub version of Kino's, so I was pretty shocked how different in tone it was to the original. To the degree that I had to dig out my DV Ds to check if my memory was lying to me.
But no, that desert scene has an entirely different tone in the original. I rarely see such a good argument for dub over sub as this. It actually made the whole review feel a bit tainted, as if he was reviewing a slightly different show from what I had seen.
Well don't leave us in suspense, what's the tone difference? What did he and us miss?
God that show looks awful. Who keeps requesting these shitty anime? Can we get more Cowboy Bebop instead?
"Turns out making everyone able to read each other's mind with no way to block it is an awful idea because NOT saying everything that pops up in your gob is a basic part of the social contract."
No shit. What deep insightful commentary.

Trying to explain something as subtle as tone in text seems like a losing proposition how ever you slice it, but seeing as failure is nothing new to me... In short, Hermes seems like an entirely different character. In the Japanese version his tone is always light and childlike. Often like in this scene, he sounds more like a petulant child. In the English version he sounds a bit aggressive and angry.
Same with Kino's "Enough". The English version sounds angry, shouting at Hermes to shut up. The Japanese version is pretty much just exasperated and it doesn't even sound like it's solely directed at Hermes, rather it's aimed at the entire situation. "I'm frying, thirsty, clawing at sand plus my bike's complaining at me. Enough!"-type of a thing.
Anyway, that explanation is hardly enough so I just recommend you find the DV Ds from somewhere and listen to the different versions, it's pretty obvious if you do it that way. I couldn't find the scene uploaded anywhere easy to watch when I did a quick search, so can't link a comparison though.
That's exactly the reaction I expected from people unfamiliar with Kino after I saw the review. It's justified too. Part of it is that the first episode was rather weak and didn't really show any of the series strong points. Chuck stated as much at the end of the video. The rest of it is the dub.
It's a shame though, since Kino's is a really good show, one of the classics. The second episode is considerably better.
I made a similar complaint about the people requesting anime from Chuck when he started the Mahoromatic reviews, but was happy when I heard he'd be doing Kino's. It made sense. In addition to being a good show it fits far better with the other shows reviewed on his channel, as it's a show with a Sci-Fi bent that heavily uses Planet of Hats.

The Dauphin
