Yeah, DS 9 always felt the most Stargate-y out of all the Star Trek series.

Star Trek suffered from the inertia of the past series by the time Voyager and Enterprise came out. Heck, Voyager used TNG(!) production numbers until season 2 because Paramount and Rick Berman wanted TNG season 8 instead of something new.

The story telling from TNG grew, bloated and mutated until Voyager and Enterprise became almost self parody.

Babylon Five had the opposite problem, it was Lord Of The Rings In Space!...and as such had a closed story arc that left half the fans saying "Alright that was cool" the other half going "NOW WHAT?!?!". And then TNT was so focused on wrestling and schlock movies that Crusade got short shrift.

From what I've read, Stargate Universe was where the wheels came off, but considering that there were 3 movies from a schlock-y Stargate movie, that way better than B5 or Firefly can boast, putting it at Trek levels of fandom...almost.

I suspect that, in the post internet world, unless a franchise is a Long Runner, pop-culture tends to skip it. The '90s brought dozens of forgettable comics '90s Anti-Hero characters and titles, lots of Sci-fi TV shows and the Turn of the Millennium brought even more....

....it's just hard to see them all in a sea of 500 channels, mobile games, and lots of re-makes of previous franchises: Marvel movies, Star Trek etc.

Warship geek talking here: that Russian sub sure looks like an old Tango class, yes? Probably a good thing the replicator got sucked into a conventional boat rather than something nuclear-powered.

So, I've been watching through the Voyager reviews and loving them, and I think I'll move into Enterprise's when I'm finished.

However, I actually want to watch DS 9 for myself, and I've decided to start as soon as possible. That said, I'm also interested in TNG, and while I don't want to wait too long for DS 9, if there are any episodes of TNG that are important to the former (or are just must-sees in general), I'd like to check them out as well. I already have "The Best of Both Worlds", "Chain of Command" and "All Good Things..." lined up, so I was wondering if anyone here had any reccomendations.

Also, while I plan on watching most of DS 9's episodes, there are a few I think I want to skip - "Come Along Home", "Let He Who is Without Sin..." and "Profit and Lace" all sound like stuff I'd rather do without. Does anybody have any suggestions on episodes that I should steer away from? I'm not asking what's filler, just the ones that are generally agreed to be bad and insignificant - if something important to the plot or to character arcs happens, I'll probably stick with it, and I'm sure there's filled that I can have fun with. I only ask because while I'm willing to dedicate my time to the series, I don't want to waste any. (I should also note that I'm not necessarily going to go by Chuck's opinion here - for example, I'm interested in "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" - and would like to evaluate most of them for myself. I just want to avoid the worst of the worst)

I should also probably note that for TNG, I've only seen "The Inner Light", as well as "Trials and Tribble-ations" and "Far Beyond the Stars" for DS 9.

[up]Let He Who is Without Sin..." and "Profit and Lace" are just Gawd-awful wastes of time. Terrible stories and cannon/character defilement. "If Wishes Were Horses" is...meh, I don't like it because it's a creative writing exercise instead of a Star Trek Episode: "What if your thoughts became real!" Skip it.

WARNING: Season One of TNG has been known to induce vomiting, rage, spontaneous human combustion and a desire to turn off the TV in those who watch the episodes...

Season 2 is not much better....... but it DOES have it's gems, Q Who, and Measure of a Man among them.

[up] I watched both of them, along with "Who Watches the Watchers" and "The Defector". All very good. I think I'll take a bit longer of a look at TNG than I was planning to.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good Troi or Crusher episodes? I'm worried that I'll end up glossing over them, which would be a shame.

Also, which episodes concern important DS 9 plot points, like the Bajorans and the Cardassians?

Face of the Enemy is generally considered to be one of if not the best Troi episode. For Crusher.... can't remember the name, the one where she is basically doing a murder mystery about who killed a frengi scientist.

"Come Along Home" really isn't unwatchable bad. The episode itself felt more like an early Voyager episode, just replace Quark was Neelix and bam done.

S1 of DS 9 really was left over TNG ideas like Voyager was. But there are quite a few important ones in there.

I also liked the episode "Remember Me" for Crusher (though it does have the Traveler).

"Remember Me" sounds interesting, so I'll give it a watch. "Suspicions" as well.

Any other Troi recommendations? It looks like that Chuck dislikes Lwaxana Troi, but I've heard some people express their liking for her, so I think I'd like to maybe see an episode or two that she appears in to decide for myself. Are there any that might work for that?

Trek fans generally either love Lwaxana or despise her. SFDebris is in the latter category.

Personally, I think that she's a fun character.

Yeah Luwaxana is a very much Love or Hate type of character, and it's all down to whether you find her style charming, irritating... or irritating, but charming to watch her use it to irritate people.

Pretty sure Half a Life is considered her best story on TNG or at least is up there.

And yeah I've always liked her.. but I can see why Chuck is annoyed by her too.

Lwaxana Troi, Neelix, Wesley Crusher, Vic Fontaine and other creator's pet characters are good examples of the creative staff Character Shilling and This Is Going to Be Huge (The Character).

As time went on, the staff caught on that Wesley and Lwaxana were never going to be popular with the fans as they were in the writer's room. I liked "Dark Page" when I first saw it, as it put Lwaxana in perspective: a woman who lost her 1st child and is now living through Deanna. Hence "Little One" as her pet name for her Replacement Goldfish daughter, given how this happens in Real Life.

The rest were just the fact that when people write TV for a living sometimes they forget what viewers would like. Not fans, just people wanting an hour of entertainment. Fans would grow to hate those characters because they were either The Load or Black Hole Sue: every time we saw The Sh_thead or Wesley, it was a scene that could have advanced the plot.

I didn't particularly like this movie when I was a kid.

A Private Little War is surprisingly sophisticated and nuanced for something Roddenderry had such a hand in. In a way it feels like almost a preview of DS9: an acknowledgement that there are still tough issues to settle.
