[up][up] Yeah, it wasn't Kamina making things all about himself, it really is a great phrase and a great sentiment. He was trying to cheer Simon up, to give him some confidence. He know Simon has some really low self esteem. Doesn't' believe in himself, but Kamina knows what he can do, DOES believe in him. And Simon believes and trusts his Bro.

But yeah it really is a great sentiment. And really can't wait for him to get to more episodes of this.

Though, given he always watches the English versions... will he be doing that for episode six? Yeah overall I prefer Dubs too, and there's not a whole lot of difference.. but for that ep, there is a MASSIVE difference between the original and the dub. Original was about the group spending time at a spa/hot springs and Kamina spending the whole time trying to get a look at Yoko naked.

American version? Still the spa stuff, but cuts out all of the Kamina trying to see some titties stuff, and turns it into a half assed clip show to fill the space.

could have sworn the spa scene was censored a lot in the original japan broadcast too

No clue, I know there is an original version out there, not sure what the exact details around it are. Just know it exists.

[up][up][up][up] I have the Gurren Lagann DVD set. All that stuff is still in it. It's kind of weird and awkward. You may be thinking of the broadcast replacement, which is a clip show, and it's actually in the DVD set too. It's why the DVD set is listed as 27 episodes when there were 26 on broadcast.

It's interesting that Deep Space Nine and Babylon Five both tackled similar themes.

The "enemy within" was a big part of popular culture even before Vietnam: The '50s brought the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Hence many asked "Have we gone to far".

The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street: the "enemy" uses the characters own paranoia to destroy them. And it was also reviewed by Sf Debris.

While DS9 just used it's "Paradise Lost" eps are just a minor part of the arc, Babylon Five had Reality Subtext:

  • B5 declaring itself and independent nation after the bombing of Mars? In the Yugoslav wars, many parts declared, then became independent nations, after being attacked by Serbia.

  • Delenn's anger at the Gray Council's inaction? Many had the same reaction to the US, NATO, European governemnts "inaction" until late in the 90's.

Mira Furlan was from Croatia, she was forced out because her husband is a Serb. So she felt very moved by "Severed Dreams", she is reported to have said to JMS "How long have you lived in Yugoslavia?"

I haven't seen TTGL, so I am going in about as blind as Chuck is—well, except for the Internet-worship over Kamina.

Got to say, unless he pulls off some impressive character development, I can see why he's so admired but I'm not joining in. Maybe this is just my recent rereading of Flashman at the Charge, but that kind of lunatic self-confidence mixed with utter witlessness is associated less with heroism and more with leading a brigade of elite cavalry to needless destruction, and then riding out again, untouched, with empty saddles all around.

I'm aware the comparison to Lord Cardigan is probably overly harsh, but eesh, my sympathies will be for the people who have deal with him.

Kamina actually turned me off of GL. He's too much of a cardboard cutout. I did eventually watch the series, but I could never like Kamina.

You two are heartless.

Besides Kamina's bravado is just that, he has a little more depth to him that just this trait.

Watching the Sy Fy miniseries of Dune in preparation for Sf Debris review.

  • Jake loyd, WilliamHurt is your father! Seriously, many actors turn in "wooden" performances.

  • Alec Newman as Paul, plays him as a massive douche nozzle, he makes Attack Of The Clones Anakin look like Ghandi. And that whine! Make it stop!

  • Ian Mc Neice as the Barron gives a very Evil Brit performance that kinda sinks a bit, but gives the Barron his due.

  • Barbora Kodetová, the poor woman. She was okay as Chani, but you can't cook with cold grease. Sean Young had a bit part, but she rose to Kyle Mac Lachlan's Paul. In the sequel, she rose to the occasion and even had me screaming "I AM A DESERT CREATURE!" so I'll cut her slack for this one. I blame the dull acting of most of the rest of the cast on the first one.

  • The rest of the actors are dull, dull, dull, undercooked performances until the end.

  • The CGI suffered due to the small budget. Early 90's CGI and the sandworms look cheesy, not the enigmatic monsters of the 80's film. Seriously, lunging at their prey? That's a bad Wii game, not a sci-fi legend.

  • I like the film because the actors at least gave their all, Ham-to-Ham Combat and a feel of scale. The first mini-series is more like a power point presentation acted by community theater.

Oh, and it's CHAN-ee not "Chaney", Paul is not making out with George Bush's vice president...Yaoi facfics aside...

[up]Yeah a buddy and I were discussing and the ideal Dune movie would be the plot and structure of the miniseries, with the actors from the movie.

I donated some money for summer wars a long while ago. I am super happy to see it finally on the schedule! Except now April is gonna feel like the longest month ever. But that's okay! I'm looking forward to Chuck's thoughts on it all.

The patreon opened the floodgates for non-tv sf to be reviewed more frequently, yes.

[up]Hey, I alternate my reviews from Stargate to Startrek every month :-P

There's also his queue system he changed before the patreon and he'd announced. Saturday is always trek, Tuesday is some other hour long show, and Thursdays are half hour shows.

Yeah what's probably throwing him off is the time Chuck was converting all of his old Youtube vids to blip.

There is a lot of "filler" episodes in Star Trek that Sf Debris could cover but I'm guessing that he's waiting for fans donations. That's why he's branched out into other series. He's hit most of the "top ten" of each series.

There are a few gems left, but there is a lot meh...

interesting... We're getting Redemption... before Reunion

Then again Chuck might be saving that one for a special reason

[up] Part of a rather grimly themed "Dead Wife Month" demonstrating Trek's tremendous respect for women by showing how often they're fridged with Reunion, Paradise Syndrome, Tears of the Prophets, and Shattered Mirror.
