I agree with Vorpy, why not just name it "Crowning Moments of Awesome"? It would solve the problem of having multiple examples, it rolls off of the tongue just as well, everyone wins.

Personally, this troper would go for anything BUT "Epic Moment" or some such thing though, because all it brings to mind is Epic Movie and ANYTHING is better than that.

Well, if there aren't any objections (I know I have at the one person's support), I'm YKTTW-ing my idea in the next few days.

Before YKTTW'ing any idea designed to replace or supplant the X Moments structure, I would seek admin approval - that means Fast Eddie. He decided on the current structure.

Point taken. How do I do that? Should I just wait if he ends up finding this thread or contact him?

Here's my idea for those who didn't see the previous page:

I still stand by my idea (proposed in a thread that seemed to die a month or two ago) that we make one page called "Crowning Moments" or something like that, describing the phenomena of Crowning Moment Of Awesome, Crowning Moment Of Funny, Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming, and whatever other Crowning Tropes Of Whatever we have/had. We make it an example free, and then link to the Awesome Moments (because that's an at least better name than Moment Of Awesome), Funny Moments, and Whatever Moments pages at the bottom, such as:

  • "For examples of these phenomena, see Blah, Blah, and Blah."

(Obviously that would need a better description.) Then, we make all the "Moments" pages (as well as Crowning Music Of Awesome, which probably can be listed on the page) Troper Tales pages so that we needn't worry as much about their subjectivity. People will have to sign their examples and only list one single example, just as it is on the Dethroning Moment Of Suck page.

Now, what say you about that? If you guys support this idea, I'll make a YKTTW for it.

Even though I know there will still be some dissenters, I see this as an idea that's likely to placate the most people, both pro-change and pro-keeping-the-original-title.

It looks like we're proposing a rename to Crowning Moments Of Awesome.

I never did like the rename of CMOA, CMOH, and CMOF.

Call me a nerd-but they sounded cool titles and they just rolled off the tongue better than the generic names given now.

What I think should be done is to make a "Crowning Moment" page for fans to say "OH MY GOD, THIS IS THE BEST MOMENT IN THIS SERIES!" and explain why. Basically, the Counter Trope to this, but without the word "Awesome" in it to refer to moments that define the series. You know, rather than to have the coolest thing from a work, you have what the editors consider to be the best moment? Then we could just have an "Awesome Moments" page that would be more consistent with the Funny Moments and Heartwarming Moments pages.

But hey, that's just me...

I was just noting the irony, indeed, Eddie. We have now come back to the original purpose of Crowning Moment of X, which was to catalogue the one, singular, moment of X for any given work. The reason we're at the point we are now is that it didn't stay that way.

I still don't see why we don't just have separate pages for "CMOA" and "MOA." That way, Moment of Awesome can be for people who want to talk about awesome stuff people did, while CMOA MUST, by all means, use the Crowner. Funny Moments should turn to Moments of Hilarity and have Crowning Moment of Funny as a Crowner page. Awesome Music shouldn't need a crowner. That should stay as one page called "Crowning Music of Awesome" in my opinion. Crowning Moment of Heartwarming could follow CMOA rules (but with the name still being Heartwarming Moments for the standard page) and...yeah. I dunno, seems like a good compromise to me.

[up] Probably because YMMV, what may seem like a somewhat heartwarming/funny/awesome moment to one person, to another person-it's the flat out greatest thing ever.

People, you can still say "I thought that scene was a crowning moment of awesome" whenever you want. TV Tropes doesn't own your vocabulary. It's a valid term of fan-speak that just happened to originate on this site. But it's just not a concept that's able to exist as a trope, because everyone's going to have their own opinion.

Okay, so upon actually reading the thread (rather than skimming through it), I noticed that the propositions by me and 0dd 1 were very much alike. The only specific difference that I can see between them is that my suggestion refers to the best moment in a work while his suggestion refers to the coolest/funniest/sweetest moment in a work.

In the meantime, here's some crap I came up with for a possible YKTTW. It has elements of my idea and 0dd 1's, along with what's being discussed elsewhere in this thread.

"This is it. This is the moment that absolutely defines your show as what it is. Whether it causes you to cheer, bust a gut, make you feel warm and fuzzy inside or does something else entirely, this moment lets the viewer know that this is what they've been waiting to see.

What makes this moment glorious and memorable depends on who you ask. It may be something on an extremely large scale or something that's humble but powerful. It doesn't even have to be that serious; it just needs to be something that shows off how good the work is.

Keep in mind:

  • One example per user for each work.
  • Please don't add things along the lines of "the entire show" or "everything she does"; this page is meant to be about a specific moment, not a huge series of events.
  • Do not remove any examples on this page, even if you disagree with them.
  • In addition, you must sign your examples. Having a mass of examples without signatures defeats the purpose of this page. Any unsigned examples will be zapped.

(Note: This thing was made in response to the discussion of the whole situation regarding the (Crowning) Moment Of Awesome page. The discussion is right here.)"

Hope it's helpful.

I'd add to bullet three something like:

...except if it violates either of the other two rules above.

Then again, even that may invite problems. Just thought I'd point that out, tho'.

So, we'd be keeping the current examples, correct?

[up] Personally, I wouldn't. Those pages are where people list all examples of Awesome, Funny, or Heartwarming moments in a series. Usually, many of these are created at once by one author in order to show that the series has multiple examples of the trope. This is basically meant to be the user's opinons on what the Most Triumphant Example of these moments are.

Anyhow, I posted up a slightly modified version of the YKTTW on that section under the working title of "The Crowning Moment". It was actually kind of fun. Feedback would be appreciated.

Again, I don't see what value this has for us. I'm sorry, but the system you are describing is exactly what we set out to make CMOA, and it didn't work because nobody followed the rules. I don't see it improving with iteration #2.

I wouldn't mind something like the DMOS system wher each troper must sign their entries and we can archive the old ones.

But then again, there's a LOT more content in MOA than DMOS.
