No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...

I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?

Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

Here is the latest model of my Chapter Colours Project: A Tactical Marine of the Angels of Absolution 5th Company, 5th Squad

The bone coloured armour came out quite well. I think the freehand Chapter symbol looks a bit childish though.

[up] Looks good...only a nitpicker would be grousing about the symbol at tabletop level.

Yeah, the Chapter symbol might not be 100% accurate to the official artwork, but you can tell what it's supposed to be. It's better than I can do, I'll say that much [lol]

So a couple days ago I order some of the kilt legs from Victoria miniatures. My plan is to make a special forces veteran squad. Should be interesting how they turn out.

Had an idea.

Space Marines (and CSM?) get access to two special rules, "Legendary Warriors" and "Legendary Army". What either of these two is switches units to a different, more powerful statline, more closely representative to Space Marine portrayal in media, and are inordinately expensive to match. The former rule only applies this to special characters while latter is more universally applied.

Edit: I was even thinking that special characters, under this rule, get their own rule where everyone else has to obligingly attack them one at a time.

So I'm seeing reports that 8th Edition is going to be getting on for Age of Sigmar levels of "fuck shit up".

At this point, beyond some level of returning Primarchs, the whole thing is a giant fog of unverified rumours.

Age of Sigmar levels, not even End Times but Age of Sigmar? Ouch.

Well it has to be two to be the Return of the Primarchs.

The rumour is that the next Primarch to return will be the Lion as part of a campaign to hunt for Luther who has gone missing from his cell.

Anyway, today on 2nd Edition Thursday: Moving through Terrain.

In 2nd Edition there were five types of terrain (not including buildings): Open Terrain – planes, fields, scrub, woods, ruins small crevasses, stairs, etc.; Difficult Terrain – Steep slopes, thick forests and jungles, fords and shallow water, marshes, soft sand, thick mud, ladders, etc.; Very Difficult Terrain – Almost sheer slopes, tar pits, pools and fast flowing (but still fordable) rivers; Impassable Terrain – Deep rivers, lakes, sheer cliffs, etc.; Obstacles – Walls, hedges, etc.

Open Terrain could be crossed easily and incurred no penalty to infantry, cavalry and the like. When crossing Difficult Terrain troops moved at half their movement value, while they moved at one quarter speed across Very Difficult Terrain. Troops couldn’t move across Impassable Terrain without special equipment (such as jump packs or house rules for climbing gear etc.) If a model moved across multiple types of terrain during their turn then they would move across each part of the terrain at the rate for that terrain (for example if a model with a 4” move travelled 2” across Open Terrain before moving into Difficult Terrain they would have 2” move left and could therefore only move 1” into the Difficult Terrain). When moving across Obstacles, if the obstacle was no more than 1” high and/or wide the model could easily vault over it and incurred no penalty. If the Obstacle was more than 1” tall but no more than twice the height of the model trying to cross it the model used half its move to climb over it stopping in front of the Obstacle if it had insufficient movement to cross. Obstacles more than twice the height of the model count as Impassable.

Vehicles dealt with terrain differently depending on their motive type:

Tracked Vehicles: A tracked vehicle could move through most terrain without any penalty with the following exceptions – They could only move at half speed through woods; When moving thorough bogs or swampy ground they had a chance of getting stuck, having to roll a D6 every time they moved through such terrain becoming immobilized if they roll 6. Tracked vehicles could move over obstacles at Slow Speed but would crash into them if travelling faster. Tracked vehicles couldn’t move over deep water but could travel over streams and fords without penalty.

Wheeled Vehicles: Wheeled Vehicles couldn’t move through Difficult or Very Difficult Terrain at Combat or Fast Speeds and couldn’t move through woods or over Obstacles of any type but were otherwise suffered no penalty.

Bikes & Trikes: Bikes & Trikes couldn’t move through Difficult or Very Difficult Terrain at Combat or Fast Speeds and couldn’t move over Obstacles of any type. They couldn’t cross any water other than shallow streams or fords either.

Walkers: Walkers could move through any terrain except deep water unhindered and they could walk underwater at half rate. Walls higher than the model’s knees were impassable but they could move through hedges and other light vegetation at no penalty.

Skimmers: Skimmers ignored all terrain effects of course. They were also allowed to finish their move on top of a terrain feature if there is room to place the model on the terrain without it falling off.

These Second Edition posts make me wish that they would release a lush, tangled, complicated, ridiculous game alongside the relatively straightforward, balanced, actually-reasonably-playable game they want to publish.

That is what I was hoping they would do with Age of Sigmar when they released the General's Handbook but they didn't go that far unfortunately. As somewhat with something of a Complexity Addiction I would love some more heavily(or overly as some would say) detailed rules.

Hmmm...definitely interested, but I'm so far behind right now that it's not going to be worth my time to pick him up. I had to break down my painting station to make room for the Christmas tree, so between that and travel for both personal and work reasons, I haven't been able to paint since Thanksgiving.

[up]He's not up for order until Boxing Day and it generally takes GW a month to do the Made to Order miniatures so you have some time.

This week I completed my first unit for the Kill Team game: The Accused, a squad of Fallen Chosen mercenaries currently working for the Red Corsairs. All the models have been heavily kit bashed and there are a few minor conversions as well.

So, the image on the Sororitas page was changed from the static Sister to the cover art for the previous Sisters codex. Not sure that it's an improvement...it's a nice image, to be sure, but the details are a little muddy at wiki size and the caption, while fluffy, isn't nearly as funny as the old one. Thoughts?

[up] They look fantastic, nice job. [tup]
