YMMV / Novoland: Eagle Flag

  • Awesome Music: "秣马/Mò Mǎ", the theme song.
  • Fan Nickname: "Lady Chicken" and "Princess Psycho" have been spotted on Tumblr as nicknames for Yu Yi and Ying Yu respectively.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Goodbye My Princess, since the series are the same genre and have a similar tone (and also share an actor: Shawn Wei plays Baili Ning Qing here and Gu Jian in Goodbye My Princess).
  • Hate Sink:
    • Baili Yin is petty, a sadist, an idiot, and completely devoid of redeeming qualities. He tortures Ji Ye, then tries to pick a fight with Asule. Who's the guest of Baili Yin's father, and also the future emperor of Qingyang.
    • Baili Jing Hong is just as stupid as his son and goes out of his way to antagonise Asule.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Baili Yin crosses it when he beats up Ji Ye and deliberately punches his injuries.
  • Narm:
    • Gui Chen using his powers in the prologue looks unintentionally silly, especially with the Repeat Cut and the way his hair flies up like he's standing in front of an especially powerful hair-dryer.
    • Yu Ran somehow gets mistaken for a man. Yu Ran looks like this. This could be excused as Asule holding the Idiot Ball, but exclamations from the watching crowd indicate they thought she was a man too.
    • Directly after this Yu Ran's dramatic exit is spoiled when a flock of geese randomly wander on-screen. Made weirder because the camera focuses on them while Yu Ran is out-of-focus.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • The wolf that attacks Asule in episode two is some of the least convincing CGI ever seen. Its head and body are too big for its legs and its fur sticks up like Sonic the Hedgehog's.
    • In close-ups the Chi Ya soldier has black, empty eye sockets. But apparently someone forgot to edit out the actor's eyes in long shots, because they're clearly visible (and the black make-up just makes this mistake more obvious).
  • The Woobie: Asule. His adoptive family are massacred in front of him by his biological father. His adopted sister dies in his arms. He's forced to marry Yu Ran. Then, as if things weren't bad enough for him, he's killed, resurrected, loses his memories, and becomes a traumatised wreck.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?:
