Nightmare Fuel / Novoland: Eagle Flag

• The opening credits are surreal in a downright terrifying way. They feature a game somewhere between chess and ice hockey, with soldiers on horseback in the middle of the pieces. Some of the pieces appear to be made of blood; when they break they spray blood everywhere until the board looks like something out of The Shining. And the whole thing is set to eerie ominous Chinese chanting.
• Gui Chen/Asule and his friends hide under a building while a battle rages around them. Then the body of Gui Chen's adoptive mother falls in front of them, with a sword sticking out of her chest.
  • After they escape from the village, Gui Chen and his friends discover a field of corpses put on display by being pinned to poles. One of them is Gui Chen's adoptive father, with an arrow through his head.
• The flashback to Gui Chen's birth. He was born during a blizzard, so some of the tribe decided he was a bad omen and wanted his father to sacrifice him to stop the blizzard. Then he was born without a heartbeat, so everyone assumed he was dead. They only discovered he was alive after his mother had stabbed herself in grief.
• The Chi Ya soldier in episode five wouldn't look out of place in a zombie film. His skin is shrivelled, his eyes are empty sockets, and he thrashes around wildly and roars like some kind of animal.
• Baili Yin punches Ji Ye repeatedly, right on the injury he received a few hours ago. Then he picks up a piece of wood and fully intends to hit Ji Ye with that before Asule intervenes.
• Tuoba Shang Yue ties Ji Ye up and forces him to stand all night long. In the rain. Surrounded by corpses. While Tuoba Shang Yue watches and gloats over his misery.
