YMMV / My Little Pony: Pony Life

Go To

  • Awesome Art:
    • While the show's designs are divisive, the show makes great use of them from what we've seen so far. The cutesy art and expressive animation fit the show's tone. It helps that it's animated by Boulder Media, whose work on previous Hasbro series was generally well-received.
    • Also, the title cards. And how. Each one looks absolutely wonderful.
  • Awesome Music: The show's theme song is surprisingly catchy, while still managing to summarize the personalities of the Mane 6 perfectly as the previous show did.
  • Base-Breaking Character: While Fluttershy was one of the most popular of the Mane 6 in the original series, this incarnation of her is a bit more divisive. Some love the cranked up Cute and Psycho trait, while others feel her getting the Adaptational Jerkass treatment rendered her In Name Only.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Of the new characters introduced in the series, Potion Nova is probably the most popular, for being a wise yet laid-back mentor to Twilight and for being adorable.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Muffins is better known to fans as Derpy Hooves.
    • DJ PON3 is better known to fans as Vinyl Scratch.
    • Various people have taken to calling the show "My Little Pony GO!", as the Denser and Wackier tone and chibi art style drew comparisons to Teen Titans Go!. To a lesser extent, "My Little Pony Roar!" (or to better fit the setting, "My Little Pony Neigh!") is also used regarding the show's similarities to ThunderCats Roar.
  • Fanon: A good chunk of the viewers think that the Pony Life came about during the moments where Pinkie Pie got Drunk with Power with Discord's chaos magic from Friendship is Magic as an In-Universe explanation of the show's existence. This sort of becomes Hilarious in Hindsight as the ending to My Little Pony: The Manga volume 3 shows Discord returning the Elements of Harmony to their proper place in time to Set Right What Once Went Wrong created the Pony Life universe.
    • Some fans believe Octavio Pie is a gender bent/transgender Marble Pie due to both of them sharing the same color scheme and being siblings to Pinkie Pie.
  • Friendly Fandoms: No surprise that there is a bit of an overlap with Filly Funtasia fans, as both have garnered quite the controversial presence in the Friendship is Magic fandom, despite being considered ultimately harmless to fans of both shows.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In "All That Jitters", Potion Nova refers to her kitchen as her "Pone Appétit Test Kitchen". The Bon Appétit brand, best known for their Test Kitchen videos, went under in Summer 2020 after a series of race-related scandals came to light.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: A common complaint of the series is that though it introduces a few interesting concepts, the episodes are too short (each being 11 minutes and usually divided into two 5-minute segments) to explore those concepts fully, as opposed to the full 22-minute format of Friendship is Magic.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The ponies said Hell!note
  • Moe: The show's chibi art style makes the already adorable Mane 6 (and everypony else) look even more so!
  • Nausea Fuel: In "Sick Day", Pinkie leaves behind a trail of snot on the floor as Rainbow Dash drags her into her room.
  • Older Than They Think: This isn't the only Hasbro show to follow the 11 minute format. It's been happening for a few years already with Hanazuki: Full of Treasures, Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own, Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy, and Transformers: Cyberverse.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Echo has very few lines, but his weird gags and attitude put him above the other Wild Siders...even in an episode centering on Sugar Snap.
  • She Really Can Act: Tabitha St. Germain's performance as Rarity's speaking voice has always been highly praised, but this series is the first time she also gets to sing as Rarity. It turns out she does pretty well at it, even getting a solo verse in the Season One finale song "We Shine Brighter Together". No small feat, as Rarity's singing in Friendship is Magic (provided by Kazumi Evans) was among the most highly regarded of the main cast.
    • This also applies to Andrea Libman as Pinkie Pie, with this series also being the first time that she entirely provides Pinkie's singing voice (which was mostly provided by Shannon Chan-Kent in Friendship is Magic, although Andrea did sing as Pinkie in a handful of songs), and it sounds just as good as it did before.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The thoughts of most on the show can be summed up as "it's not as bad as some feared, but it's not great either."
  • Tainted by the Preview: Fans of Friendship Is Magic weren't too pleased by previews given the show's cutesy art style and Denser and Wackier tone. Negative comparisons to Teen Titans Go! and ThunderCats Roar ran rampant.
  • Uncertain Audience: Pony Life imports most elements of Friendship is Magic, but seems to be an Alternate Universe and non-canonical to it. On its own Pony Life doesn't really establish its characters or setting, so it is reliant on viewers being familiar with Friendship is Magic already to understand it. However, most fans of Friendship is Magic didn't really take to the show, due to it being Denser and Wackier with an animation style and sense of humor that seemed aimed at young children. But in regards to being aimed at young children, most episodes of Friendship is Magic are on streaming services and a lot of its content is available through official YouTube uploads. The result is that Pony Life sits in an odd limbo where fans of Friendship is Magic didn't care for it, non-fans who weren't interested in Friendship is Magic weren't drawn in by Pony Life, and non-fans interested in the series won't understand Pony Life's premise and could easily watch Friendship is Magic instead.
  • Unexpected Character: Herd Happily. The second zebra to appear in this generation of My Little Pony (outside of the comics).
