YMMV / Justice League × RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: While Part 2’s final battle is a spectacle that pushes Team RWBY and the Justice League into using what they’ve learned, Arthur Watts himself unfortunately doesn’t put up much of a fight, despite getting a stronger body. He fights primarily by either shooting at the heroes or summoning Grimm to attack them, and doesn't engage in hand-to-hand combats. As such, Ruby easily punches him in the face at the start, and the Justice League take care of him easily once Kilg%re possesses him. Though the canon Watts wasn’t a masterful fighter either, this may still be disappointing as his return as the mastermind was set up to be a shocking threat.
  • Broken Base:
    • The entire concept of these crossovers. One one hand, some fans are excited for such an event and were hoping for more crossovers with other Warner Bros. IPs in the future (if WB didn’t shutdown Rooster Teeth), while some believe that an crossover with DC Comics is fine, but question why they chose the Justice League over more fitting teams like the Teen Titans. And there’s a third camp who wish that theses crossovers were never made, seeing as these are the final RWBY projects made by Rooster Teeth before it and DC’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery shut them down, with some speculation that the company wasn’t impressed with the film’s performance, seeing as they plan to sell off the RWBY IP instead of inheriting it.
    • Whether or not these crossovers should be canon. On one hand, fans point to part 2 as having scenes where Ruby needs to learn a lesson in leadership, while some do not like the possibility of the DC Universe being a necessary part of the RWBY mythos. Not helping matters is CRWBY’s stance on the crossovers’ place in the main show’s canon, as main writer and the person who pitched the crossovers Kerry Shawcross has stated that the crossovers are “canon-adjacent” akin to RWBY: Ice Queendom note . Meanwhile around part 2’s release, many on the staff have said that the crossovers are not canon at all. Ultimately, it remains to be seen if the crossovers lose their canonical status if RWBY were to be sold to another company, with the films themselves potentially getting Screwed by the Lawyers due to WB no longer owning RWBY.
  • Complete Monster: Dr. Arthur Watts is a genius scientist who escaped his death by uploading his mind into cyberspace, and Kilg%re is an AI determined to kill the Justice League; the two team up to kill both their respective enemies. Watts trapped both Team RWBY and the Justice League in a digital world with Kilg%re to kill them, trapping Kilg%re there as well to ensure he finishes the job while Kilg%re possesses the Flash and forces him to try to kill his own friends. After this fails, they then launch a Grimm invasion on Earth, attacking cities all around the world with Watts intending to conquer the Earth and rebuild it according to his vision, while Kilg%re possesses several other heroes to kill their friends, before the two turn on each other after Kilg%re learns the truth about Watts trapping him in the simulation.
  • Continuity Lockout: The film is set up so that the basics of Remnant are clear (what Dust and Grimm are, the basic character behavior, etc.) and so the story would be driven more by the characters interacting with each other rather than any overarching storylines from either franchise. That said, there are still some vital details that can be a bit odd to people unfamiliar with either franchise, such as the reason behind Ren's nastier than usual behavior due to his storyline in Volume 7 to 8, the context behind the various flashbacks that are seen during the film, and who Kilg%re is.
  • Crossover Ship: Jaune X Jessica (KnightLight / Green Knightnote ) absolutely exploded in popularity after the first part came out. While the other crossover Ship Tease moments are contested, this one has a lot of support. In Part 2, Jessica's first question to RWBY is if Jaune and his team are with them and is visibly disappointed when they (mainly Jaune) aren't around.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • Upon the release of the first trailer and how everything looks, many fans believe that this takes place in a version of Remnant where the Battle of Beacon happened, but the heroes came out on top even with the losses. Sadly averted as it's a virtual reality world.
    • The villain who teamed up with Kilg%re is left a mystery. While some think it might be Watts, others believe that it's Merlot, the villain from RWBY: Grimm Eclipse, as part of his schtick was the modifications of Grimm, which we see in the movie. Additionally, his relative obscurity (much like Kilg%re) combined with not being tethered to any major part of Volume 7's storyline meant that any significant contradictions would be few and far between. The fact that brand new Grimm that even the characters from Remnant know nothing about are being conjured up in Part 2 is simply adding fuel to the fire. Turns out, it IS Watts, but Team RWBY does bring up Merlot as an option due to the modified Grimm.
  • Fanfic Fuel: What would the other RWBY and DC characters, dead or alive, would look like in each other’s universes?
  • Fan Nickname:
    • The team-up of Jaune and Jessica Cruz has been called the "Social Anxiety duo", as the two have both dealt with social anxiety and Jaune helps Jessica get through her anxiety when together.
    • Ruby and Clark's team-up is called "Scout Leader Siblings", due to their interactions together are considered as a brother-sister-esque relationship as they also acknowledge and respect each other's strengths and flaws in their leadership styles.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: As stated above, there are some fans who don’t see the crossovers as canon due to them not want the DC Universe to be a part of the RWBY lore, though this stance is raised even more following WBD’s shutdown of Rooster Teeth and this being the final major RWBY project ever made at the time (not counting the Vol 9: Beyond shorts) as well as them putting the RWBY franchise for sale, with some fearing that the property could be written off for taxes, potentially leaving the story to be left unfinished if it didn’t find a buyer.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Yang calling out Ruby for being reckless and Ruby's response simply that saving the world is their priority hits a lot harder with the full release of the Volume 9 epilogue animatic, which reveals that the very next thing Salem did was decimate their home country of Vale, making Vacuo quite literally the last bastion.
  • I Knew It!: Quite a few fans figured out Kilg%re's partner was Dr. Watts well before the release of Part 2, cemented for many by the report of the voice cast including Christopher Sabat's name in it.
  • Les Yay: A minor moment, but when Team RWBY and the Justice League are all finally reunited, the first thing Ruby notices is that Weiss is there, and rushes over to Glomp her. Now, that's just Ruby. . . but there's a long pan up Weiss's body as Ruby notices her, particularly noting her long legs and short combat skirt.
  • Misblamed: After the Volume 9 Blu-Ray was released, commentary was revealed that a number of segments had been cut due to time and money, sparking speculation that Part 1, despite its popularity, caused CRWBY to lose funding for Volume 9 to add onto the movie. Further fanning the flames is a Caustic Critic revealing that, at a Q&A panel, Kerry Shawcross pitched the idea of a RWBY and Justice League crossover movie, citing the success of the comics, and Warner Bros. went with it with little pushback, thus accusations were tossed out Volume 9 suffered due to a passion project. This forced Kerry to come out and explain that the movies did nothing to hurt Volume 9's budget (it was more due to the Volume being budgeted before COVID-19 hit and the pandemic running roughshod across everything) and that it was funded by Warner Bros. themselves.
  • Signature Scene: All scenes that involves Jaune and Jessica are loved by fans. But the one scene that stands out the most is the one where Jaune encourages and supports Jessica to break out from a sealed room which its walls closing in to squash them, with her reciting the Green Lantern oath as the icing on the cake.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The overall reception to the films by fans. While both films aren’t seen as cinema, at the end of the day they are still enjoyable to an extent, and they do have their moments. Just don’t expect many RWBY fans to recommend it to newcomers.
  • Spiritual Successor: Part One of the movie bears a lot of similarities to the Justice League episode "Legends". Two groups of heroes meet under strange circumstances after the Justice League engage a mechanical villain, and are thrown into an entirely different and illusory world that follows their own set of odd rules (Remnant's Dust, Semblances and Grimm to Legends' more old-school comic book-styled villains and plots). The person who feels a strong connection to this new world for personal reasons (Jon Stewart in Justice League and Bruce Wayne in Justice League x RWBY) teams up with his female compatriot and begins to realize that there is something wrong with this world after more anomalies show up, ultimately leading to the revelation that the world is not what it seems, that one of the heroes is in fact the true villain controlling an illusory world for their own purposes. Also, the power of the Green Lantern is ultimately what allows the team to return to their world at the end of the story.
  • Tainted by the Preview:
    • An officially-released screenshot showing Ruby and Weiss side by side with Superman and Batman in their RWBY/Justice League costumes made many fans worry that the film would include the comic’s notorious Ship Tease moments.
    • When Part 2's trailer was released, many were glad to see the greater emphasis on action and bigger urban set-pieces, but a lot of people couldn't overlook how bad Team RWBY's outfits look in the DC world, especially in stark comparison to the DC/RWBY mini-series. Blake stands out the most out of everyone else, losing her trademark Faunus ears which are a major part of her character and backstory. Many feared that the movie would either downplay her response to the change, ignore its (lack of) presence, or give Blake an "I Just Want to Be Normal" character arc to reflect Bruce's "I Just Want to Be Special" in the first part, all of which would be seen as a betrayal to the character. Even DC-savvy fans think this doesn't make much sense either, considering there are several characters within the universe that bear animal traits, such as Cheetah and Beast Boy, meaning it she wouldn't have been out-of-place. This feeling only got worse when the final film reveals this change affects nothing to Blake or the overall story, which again made many wonder what was even the point of removing her ears in the Justice League world.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Considering Jaune's scenes with Jessica were consistently regarded to be the best moments of Part One, he is notably absent from Part Two. Jessica asks about him, and is told that he’s on patrol with Ren and Nora, much to her (and the audience's) visible disappointment. Part Two also occurs after the events of Volume 9, as Team RWBY's experiences in the Ever After are mentioned, meaning fans also lost out on an early glimpse of Jaune's current emotional condition after his years of isolation in that realm.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Vixen is a superheroine no one expected to be in the main cast. While she is a member of Justice League, she isn't one of the well-known founding members and her character was never in the RWBY/Justice League comic.
    • For some, the same goes for Jessica Cruz being the Green Lantern instead of Hal Jordan, who is usually the definitive Green Lantern. That said, she was already the Green Lantern who appeared in the comic and has been getting a lot of exposure in animation.
    • It's safe to say that nobody was expecting the villain of the movie to turn out to be Kilg%re. He's not a particularly well known villain, for one thing. Even the League members in-universe didn't think he was responsible for their predicament when Flash brings up that possibility because he's such a minor villain in their world (by their standards), and even the Part 2 trailer had Black Canary pull a Double Take when the rest of the League mentions how much of a threat he was in Part 1.
    • In Part 2, a very unexpected appearance is Killer Croc, who seems to have decided to help out against the Grimm alongside Batman. Joining him are Weather Wizard and Mirror Master, who Yang and Black Canary are incredibly unimpressed by. Finally, Watts makes a return as the mastermind, which may come as a surprise considering he died. Turns out, he planned for that and made a backup of his consciousness.
