YMMV / Jewelpet Sunshine

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: During the broadcast, people were confused and disgusted at how the writers treated the pairing of Mikage/Ruby with the utmost seriousness, and far preferred Mikage/Kanon. Cue reveal and fans dropping Mikage/Kanon like a hot potato.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does Katori really love Charotte or is it only using her as a handy blood source?
  • Awesome Ego: Sunshine would probably lose more than half its entertainment value if it eliminated Kanon's amazingly over-the-top self-confidence.
  • Awesome Music: The television airing had a myriad of licensed songs played during fitting moments, from Art Garfunkel to The Beatles, taking a stroll through Irene Cara.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Kanon is either an unique protagonist whose haughty personality is a refreshing change from all the shy, unconfident girls, or a totally unsympathetic, selfish quasi-Villain Protagonist.
  • Bizarro Episode:
    • Episode 39 is completely detached from the rest of the season. No one from the regular cast appears save for Labra and Angela (and an easy to miss appearance by Jewelina's fairy assistant). The plot is a replica of 1970's road movies, where Labra and Angela get mistaken for heinous criminals and get chased by the police, then almost enslaved by a circus and finally nearly kidnapped by aliens. And all this junk happened because they wanted to deliver the mail to the end of the world.
    • Episode 36 (Jugempet) is another detached episode about the cast being replaced with Shoddy Knockoff Imitations. It really goes into strange places with most of the cast blindly accepting the changes and it gets very off-putting. The episode ends on a dismal note with everyone becoming an emotionless zombie, but in the following episode it's like nothing happened.
  • Broken Base: The loss of the Magical Girl elements. There are people who got into Jewelpet for this and find it lamentable that it's dropped starting here, while others think this allowed the anime series to find its own identity.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Sure, Mikage gets to be with the love of his life forever... but did he even say anything to his parents during those five years? And how are they (and Kanon) going to react when they find out he turned into a Jewelpet?
  • Growing the Beard: Regardless of whether it's good or not, many people consider Sunshine (specifically, the downplaying of the magical elements and introduction of off-the-wall humour) the point at which the anime grew into its own thing.
    • For an in-season example: episode 14, which provides the opportunity of showing that, though still a Gag Series at its core, it is entirely capable of writing drama side-by-side with comedy and really sets the Love Triangle of Ruby/Mikage/Kanon in motion.
  • Memetic Mutation: Garnet snaps her fingers to balance the universe.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Episode 36-A, with all the characters being replaced by people who look like them but are not them. It's a Paranoia Fuel extravaganza!
  • No Yay: Mikage/Ruby, considering one is a human and another a tiny Jewelpet. Remedied in the end by turning Mikage into a Jewelpet.
  • Periphery Demographic: Very well-liked by the older audience, but the main demographic of kids doesn't seem very fond of it (the high school setting probably alienates them).
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: Episode 25 created some minor strife over who Dian should be with - Garnet or Diana?
  • Signature Scene: The Flashdance parody in episode 25.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Some people who started with the first series or Twinkle can't really handle the turn for the insane that the anime took starting here.
    • The DVD by having its licensed soundtrack removed and replaced with incredibly corny 80s-sounding instrumentals (think as if Giorgio Moroder had been hired to score the anime).
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The relationship of Kaede and Charotte. Despite being roommates, they're not seen interacting even once in the whole story. It would have been a great opportunity to develop Kaede beyond her relationship with Kanon, especially considering Komachi got such development with Sango.
  • Tough Act to Follow: What seems to be felt in regards to Jewelpet Kira☆Deco! following on its heels in addition to Sunshine coming after Jewelpet Twinkle☆.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: What writer was enough of a madman to dress Jill, Kaede and Komachi in dominatrix outfits? In a weekend morning anime?
  • Woolseyism: The title of episode 30-A was changed from "Look Behind You" to "All The Teacher Iruka's Men" in European dubs. Not only it is a delightful Shout-Out and Parental Bonus, but it also makes more sense in the context of the episode, as the plot is about Sapphie being curious and actively chasing down the men who push Iruka's water tank. The former title is suggestive of Paranoia Fuel, which Sapphie never feels, but it is the reaction that viewers might have with the ending of the episode.
