The Walking Dead makes effective use of Anyone Can Die, meaning Wham Episodes, Wham Lines and Wham Shots are frequent. Click here for the TV series.


    Wham Episodes 

Volume 1: Days Gone Bye

  • Issue 5: Amy is Mercy Killed by her sister Andrea after getting ambushed by a zombie, and Jim is bitten in the resulting chaos.
  • Issue 6: Jim is left to die out in the woods and Shane finally loses it entirely after Lori screams at him when he punches Rick. Shane confronts Rick in the forest with a rifle, and is shot in the neck by Carl, who is trying to protect his father.

Volume 2: Miles Behind Us

Volume 3: Safety Behind Bars

  • Issue 14: The farm residents re-join the group, and Julie is killed by Chris in a failed teenage suicide pact.
  • Issue 15: The group discover that everyone turns into zombies when they die regardless of whether they were bitten or not. Tyreese strangles Chris to death for killing Julie and both their zombies are killed. Rick returns to the Atlanta camp to kill Shane's zombie. Tyreese fiercely runs suicidally into the group of zombies in the gym and the others are forced to leave him behind. Hershel finds the decapitated bodies of his twin girls Susie and Rachel.
  • Issue 16: Tyreese is found alive inside the gym and Thomas is revealed to be behind Susie and Rachel's murders when he attacks Andrea doing laundry.
  • Issue 17: Rick saves Andrea from Thomas and proceeds to bash him so close to death that he literally breaks every bone in his hand doing so, rendering his right hand completely useless. Afterwards, Rick declares that they will execute Thomas by hanging. This is the first moment Rick slips into moral ambiguity, especially after telling Lori to "shut the fuck up".
  • Issue 18: Patricia frees Thomas, who immediately turns on her. Maggie completely unloads her pistol into him, killing him instantly. After this, Dexter and Andrew, allied with Patricia, hold the group at gunpoint and force them to leave.

Volume 4: The Heart's Desire

  • Issue 22: Carol kicks Tyreese out after seeing him get pleasured by Michonne, and then tries to commit suicide by slitting her wrists.
  • Issue 23: Rick and Tyreese fight and Rick's leadership is challenged when the group become skeptical of his mental state after learning he killed Dexter. Allen dies of blood loss.

Volume 5: The Best Defence

  • Issue 28: The Governor slices off Rick's hand and begins to rape Michonne.

Volume 6: This Sorrowful Life

  • Issue 32: With the help of Martinez, Alice and Dr Stevens; Rick and Glenn finally escape Woodbury, at the cost of Stevens' life. Michonne stays behind to confront the Governor.
  • Issue 33: Michonne and the Governor fight, and Michonne gets the upper hand. She proceeds to brutally torture him, resulting in him losing an eye, and arm and his penis.

Volume 7: The Calm Before

  • Issue 39: Lori gives birth to a baby girl and Dale gets bitten by a zombie on the ankle.
  • Issue 41: The group chain up a zombie in the hopes of researching it and Carol allows herself to get bitten by it.
  • Issue 42: Carol dies of the infection and the Woodbury soldiers finally reach the prison, with the Not Quite Dead Governor leading them.

Volume 8: Made To Suffer

  • Issue 44: The Governor launches his first attack on the prison. The group make it out, but Andrea, Axel and Rick are all heavily wounded in the process.
  • Issue 46: Tyreese is decapitated by the Governor in front of the group in an attempt to get them to let him into the prison.
  • Issue 47: Woodbury soldiers attack the prison again. Axel is killed in the firefight, Andrea returns to help the group and kills Gabe (the Governer's second-in-command) and somebody holds Lori at gunpoint.
  • Issue 48: The culmination of almost two years worth of issues results in almost every single plotline reaching an end and the unexpected and tragic deaths of several main characters. Patricia dies. Hershel grabs Billy and runs, but Billy is shot in the neck anyway, prompting Hershel to break down and allow himself to be killed personally by the Governor. Alice covers the Grimes family while they make their escape, but she is wounded badly and then shot at point blank by the Governor. The Governor commands Lily Caul (one of his soldiers) to fire at the Grimes family and she obliges, hitting and killing Lori. Lori collapses and crushes Judith. Lily, outraged at having been forced to kill a baby, murders The Governor as the prison is overrun by zombies and Rick and Carl escape alone.

Volume 11: Fear The Hunters

  • Issue 61: As Andrea goes to check on the twins in the woods she discovers that Ben has snapped and killed his brother Billy with a knife. Shocked and horrified by this she can only stare in disbelief as the rest of the group arrive to see what has happened. Later during the night Carl sneaks out of bed and executes Ben to keep the group safe from him, but is seen by Morgan on his way back to the tent. Right before the issue ends two figures are seen observing the group and planning to follow them...
  • Issue 66: The Fear The Hunters story arc ends with a bang as Rick's group massacre the Hunters in the most gruesome way possible before burning their bodies. This horrifies Gabriel, but Rick and the others say they had no choice in the matter and did what had to be done. During the night after the group returns to the church Dale dies from his infection and is buried. As Rick is struggling with the grief of what he had done to protect the group he turns to see that he had accidentally confessed everything to Carl. In tears Carl then reveals to his father that he was the one who had killed Ben back at the camp.

Volume 14: No Way Out

  • Issue 83: Morgan passes on due to infection or blood loss and is put down. On a botched escape attempt both Jessie and Ron get devoured by zombies right in front of Rick, who has to sever the victim's hand to prevent Carl from being eaten as well. Finally, as Rick and Carl make a run for it they encounter Douglas Monroe in the process of committing suicide by walking straight into the mob of zombies, who proceeds to accidentally shoot Carl in the eye with a stray bullet before he gets ripped apart.

Volume 17: Something To Fear

  • Issue 100: Negan, the guy who was threatening the Hilltop finally reveals himself to Rick's group by surrounding them on the road with 50 armed men and telling them what will happen if they don't fall in line. As punishment for their disobedience and killing of several of his men he calls Glenn forward and smashes his skull with a barbed baseball bat while his friends and family look on horrified. The issue ends with Negan promising to return soon and leaving Rick's group with Glenn's mangled body.

Volume 24: Life And Death

  • Issue 144: After dismissing Rick, Carl and Lydia from her territory Alpha warns them that there will be serious consequences to trespassing on her land again and that the border is now marked to make sure there are no more mistakes. Upon arrival at the new border Rick is shocked and horrified to discover that several residents from all four communities have been beheaded and impaled on posts, including several long runners such as Olivia, Rosita and even Ezekiel.

Volume 26: Call To Arms

Volume 28

  • Issue 165: Andrea has seemingly been bitten on the neck by a walker, only noticing this after saving Eugene.
  • Issue 167: Andrea's bite was truly from a walker, and she dies by Rick's side. Enough said.

Volume 30: New World Order

  • Issue 175: The group arrive safety in the Commonwealth, but decide to check out a missing persons wall on the way into town. After being called over Michonne finds a photo of herself from before the apocalypse... along with an address where she can find her presumed dead daughter Elodie.

Volume 32

  • Issue 191: After a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Commonwealth thanks to Rick it looks like the fourth compendium will wrap up similarly to the second, with the group building a new life for themselves and looking forward to a much brighter future. Then Sebastian sneaks into Rick's room at night and shoots him for removing his family from power. The issue ends with Rick clutching his chest and spitting up blood, indicating that the wound is most likely fatal. Damn, Kirkman...
  • Issue 192: The biggest death in the comics ever happens... that of Rick Grimes'.

  • Issue 7:
    Lori: No, Rick. I’m pregnant.

Volume 3

  • Issue 16:
    Andrea: Well Thomas... if you're not going to help, why'd you come down here?
    Thomas: So I could cut off your head.
  • Issue 17:
    Rick: Lori... Shut the fuck up.
  • Issue 18:
    Dexter: (holding Rick at gunpoint) I'll make this really simple for you, farm boy. We were here first—and you wore out your welcome real quick. Get the fuck out of my house.

Volume 4

  • Issue 23:
    Andrea: Allen is dead.
  • Rick's famous line from Issue 24:
    Rick: We are the walking dead!

Volume 5

  • Issue 25:
    Glenn: Oh my God, Rick, Look!! I'm not seeing things am I?
    Rick: Holy shit — you're right. It's a helicopter.
  • Issue 26:
    Carol (to Lori): I kinda want to marry you.
    The Governor: Well stranger, we feed then strangers.

Volume 6

  • Issue 31:
    Martinez: I'm getting you out of here! I'm helping you escape!

Volume 7

  • Issue 39:
    Lori: Rick, it— I think it's time.
  • Issue 42:
    The Governor: Kill them all!

  • Issue 5: The shot of Jim with a bite mark.
  • Issue 6: Both the bullet piercing through Shane's neck and Carl holding the gun it was fired from.

Volume 3

  • Issue 14: Tyreese holding Julie's dead body.
  • Issue 15: Hershel finding his twin daughters decapitated in the barbershop.
  • Issue 16: The group finding Tyreese alive in the corner of the gym.

Volume 4

  • Issue 22: Carol with slit wrists and Sophia watching horrified from the corner.

Volume 5

  • Issue 25: Rick's hand being sliced off by the Governor.

  • Issue 39: Dale getting bitten on the ankle by a zombie.
  • Issue 41: Carol allowing herself to be bitten by a zombie.
  • Issue 42: Rick turns to see Woodbury tanks approaching the prison.

Volume 8

  • Issue 46: The Governor being held at gunpoint by Michonne.
  • Issue 47: Lori with a gun to her head.

Volume 11

  • Rick is talking to Abraham, who is seemingly behind him, about the horrific slaughter of the Hunters, admitting that guilt is still in his mind, and doesn't know how Carl would react if he heard this. And then he turns around, with the person behind him not being Abraham, but Carl himself.

Volume 17

Volume 28

  • Issue 165: Andrea has just got back with Eugene on horseback through an enormous walker herd, and then she notices a bite on her neck.

Volume 30: New World Order

  • Issue 175: The group stop at a missing persons wall on the outskirts of the Commonwealth before heading into town. After being called over Michonne finds a photo of herself from before the apocalypse. What really changes everything, though, is what the photo has written on it:
    Have you seen my mom Michonne? If you have information please contact Elodie at the bakery on 6th st.
    • The introduction of the Commonwealth itself. Most of the organized survivor communities have numbered in the hundreds and covered relatively tiny areas. The Commonwealth is 50,000 strong and appears to be in control of a small city.

Volume 32: Rest in Peace

  • Issue 191: Sebastian Milton gunning down Rick.
  • Issue 192: Carl seeing his zombified father and killing him.
