Yes, they are breathing underwater

Puffer and Clarissa is a sci-fi/fantasy webcomic created by James Nelson. It updates on Mondays and Thursdays.

Puffer White is your ordinary fifteen-year-old girl; She lives on a warship, has gadgets that allow her to breathe underwater, and helps her genius mom in her quest to rule the world. On a routine raid on some ships, Puffer gets washed overboard with Clarissa, one of the passengers. The girls will have to get along in order to survive the dangerous depths of the ocean as they dodge pirates, monsters, and angry moms in order to hang out once their adventure is done.

Puffer And Clarissa contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Sharon is verbally abusive to her daughter, often mocking her and diminishing her accomplishments.
  • Action Girl: Puffer, Clarissa, and Sharon all find themselves in situations where they have to fight or swim their way out of a situation.
  • Animal Motifs: All of the main characters are named and visually styled after sea creatures.
  • Bad Boss: Lord Jel's response to Sharon activating the Storm Machine to demonstrate its power instead of using it to immediately attack ship towns is to order her execution.
  • Big Bad: Lord Jel is responsible for the fact that the world is flooded. He has also bred sea monsters to inhabit the waters.
  • Butt-Monkey: Puffer and Killer Whale both lose arguments and get embarrassed frequently.
  • Cool Boat: All the humans live on massive communities of ships with trees growing from them, so this comes into play.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Killer Whale and Sharon White are both pretty bad people, but they have funny moments.
  • Cozy Catastrophe: The story takes place hundreds of years after the world was flooded, forcing humans to live on ships. Aside from the threat of pirate supervillains, life seems to go on for most people.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Sharon White created the Storm Machine, as well as her own robot army.
  • Flooded Future World: The world is completely submerged. Humans live on either boats or in underwater bases.
  • From Bad to Worse: Puffer and Clarissa get knocked into the ocean by a wave and become lost. Then a sea monster notices them.
  • Mecha-Mooks: Sharon commands an army of robot soldiers and drone ships.
  • Mysterious Past: It is not clear what exactly Lord Jel is. Characters wonder if he is an alien, a cyborg wizard, or a robot. The fact that his origins are unknown doesn't help either.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Killer Whale seems like a moron, but he does command a massive submarine and prefers to take fights where he's sure he'll win, so he's still caused plenty of suffering in his life.
  • One-Way Visor: Killer Whale's black visor covers his eyes and most of his nose.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Lord Jel has a single glowing red eye and is definitely dangerous.
  • Sea Monster: Courtesy of Lord Jel, the ocean can be a dangerous place.
  • Submarine Pirates: Killer Whale travels using a submarine that's colored to look like an Orca.
  • The Sociopath: Killer Whale is a murderer who enjoys hurting people who can't fight back.
  • Underwater Base: Lord Jel has one.
  • Weather-Control Machine: Sharon built the Storm Machine for Lord Jel to unleash hurricanes on anyone who stands against him. Thankfully she sabotaged it before fleeing.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Puffer obeys and idolizes her mom.
