Graffiti Groovin' provides examples of:

  • Adapted Out: Girlfriend isn't present in the mod, as Boyfriend is on his way to a date with her.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: Zig-zagged: "Trickmas" starts with you playing as Cassette Girl, who hasn't appeared in the mod up to this point outside of cameos; once the second half begins, the player takes control of both her and Skarlet, and then later has a turn with Hank, who hasn't been alluded to at all prior to this song.
  • Cameo Cluster:
    • During "Soda Pop" and "Fuss", the subway train will pull in and the door will open, revealing multiple characters from other mods or Newgrounds related media. These being Whitty, Meat Boy, Dr. Halloween, Agoti, Nikku, Cassette Girl, the Green Knight, and Pim and Charlie.
    • In "Bunboxxin", Edd, Isaac, Hex, and The Knight are visible in the window behind Skarlet and Matt.
    • The bopping heads in the first part of "Trickmas" are Boyfriend, Nikku, Melody, and Hex. In the second half, Girlfriend is seen with Boyfriend in the train car, her first appearance in the mod outside of the gallery.
  • Camera Perspective Switch: During "Streetstyle"'s beatdrop, the camera zooms in so Skarlet is directly facing the camera during her turn, with it going back to the usual perspective once Boyfriend's turn begins.
  • Christmas Episode: "Trickmas" is a song that was released on Christmas day of 2022; the first part of the song sees Cassette Girl and Skarlet singing together for Christmas, the former dressed as an elf while the latter is dressed as a reindeer. In the second half, the two chase after Tricky, who's dressed as a twisted Santa, complete with his hair dyed white; Hank has also dressed for the occasion, with his usual black clothes swapped for red.
  • Concept Art Gallery: The mod comes with an art gallery filled with concepts for the mod, art of Skarlet drawn by the crew, fanart, and various funny warm up sketches.
  • Creator Cameo: Alongside Boyfriend and Girlfriend, the creators of the original Friday Night Funkin' can be seen in the window of the train Tricky hijacked.
  • The Dividual: Downplayed; while Skid and Pump are still fought together, they have their own separate sprites and chromatics, the latter by splitting their samples between the two so Skid sings the high notes and Pump sings the low notes.
  • Duels Decide Everything: Justified and later exploited: the mod begins with Skarlet betting on a rap battle with Boyfriend, and later when he follows her atop the train, she challenges him to one final song knowing he'd never back down even if he was raring for an actual fight.
  • Double Take: The cutscene leading up to "Streetstyle" has briefly turn her head, see Boyfriend, and go back to counting the money she stole. She then turns around completely after realizing Boyfriend followed her.
  • Flipping the Bird: Tricky ends off Hank's section of "Trickmas" by giving him the middle finger.
  • Funny Background Event: When lightning strikes during "Sinister", Skarlet and Nikku's shadows show up behind Skid and Pump, with narrowed eyes and sharp-toothed grins. As they probably don't mean the boys any harm, It's just for cool effect.
  • Guest Fighter: "Bunboxxin" sees Skarlet in a training session with Matt from Wii Sports, specifically his Wii Funkin' incarnation, while "Sinister" sees her teaming up with Nikku from Hotline 024 in a rap battle against Skid and Pump.
  • Halloween Episode: Similar to the vanilla Friday Night Funkin's Week 2, one of the bonus songs is "Sinister", a goofy, spooky song against Spooky Month's Skid and Pump. Fittingly, the mod was first released around Halloween of 2022.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: "Trickmas" at first is between Skarlet and Cassette Girl, but then when the song appears to be over, a Grunt brings in a present. Out pops Tricky the Clown, which leads into him getting on a train while Skarlet and Cassette Girl chase after him for the rest of the song.
  • Interface Screw: Multiple songs in the mod have the UI slightly tilt up and down for additional effect.
  • Interface Spoiler: Averted with "Trickmas". The song initially seems to be just 1 minute and 48 seconds, but once Tricky shows up and the scene moves to the second half, the song timer scrolls back half way, revealing the song to actually be 3 minutes and 58 seconds long.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: After losing her second rap battle against Boyfriend, rather than challenging him to a third, Skarlet instead distracts him and steals the money, escaping on top of a leaving train.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Skarlet looks like a human, but has pink skin, long rabbit ears, and a big puffy tail.
  • Look Behind You: After "Fuss", Skarlet points to something behind Boyfriend. Boyfriend turns around, and Skarlet takes the opportunity to steal the bet money before running off.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • "Streetstyle" has the same boxy buildings and purple sky as Week 3 from the original game, with the passing rail poles indicating it's the same railway that's in the background of the Week.
    • "Bunboxxin" is based off the Working the Bag training level from Wii Sports Boxing, with Matt wearing the same white t-shirt and gloves as he does there.
    • "Sinister" takes place in the attic of the spooky mansion from Week 2.
    • Skid's left and down poses are the exact same as the original game, just redrawn so he's by himself rather than standing on Pump's shoulders.
    • The remixed "Philly Nice" is based on the vanilla game's Erect remixes, with Pico's vocals being mostly the same while Skarlet freestyles for a majority of the song's runtime.
    • In the second half of "Trickmas", Boyfriend is wearing a crown, Girlfriend has a diamond ring, and the devs of the original game are holding wads of money, referencing the FNF Kickstarter, specifically a drawing from the Kickstarter of BF and GF decked out in gold jewellery.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Boyfriend, while cocky, is generally good natured and easy going. After Scarlet steals his date money, he drops all pretense and angrily follows her on top of a moving train, with his expressions and poses during "Streetstyle" showcasing way more focus and determination than usual from him.
  • Original Flavor: The mod's art direction is very close to that of the original game; in particular, the character expressions, especially the ones for the miss poses, match faces Phantom Arcade has drawn during livestreams.
  • Promoted to Playable: All of the freeplay songs have the player controlling Skarlet.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The story mode's textboxes are styled after the ones in Persona 5, with a black thunderbolt for the dialogue box and a white ribbon above it with the character's name.
    • One of the warmup sketches in the gallery is Boyfriend dressed in Mario Strikers attire.
  • Trademark Favorite Drink: Skarlet loves soda, and in "Soda Pop" and "Ignited" she's holding a can of Pepsi. One of the warmup sketches also has her fawning over a can of Dr. Pepper.
  • Traintop Battle: The final song of Story Mode, "Streetstyle", sees Skarlet and Boyfriend rapping atop a moving subway train.
  • The Unfought: While Nene appears in the background in "Ignited" and "Philly Nice" alongside Pico/Darnell, she doesn't have a song of her own.
  • Vocal Evolution: In the first release of the mod, Skarlet had a deeper singing voice. In the 1.5 update, her vocals were changed out for a higher pitched, almost electronic sounding voice.
  • Wingding Eyes: The Graffiti segments of "Streetstyle" have Skarlet's and Boyfriend's eyes replaced with Xs.
  • "Yes"/"No" Answer Interpretation: In the cutscene leading up to "Fuss", Skarlet asks if Boyfriend would be willing to go double or nothing on the bet. When Boyfriend responds with his usual "beep", Skarlet just assumes he means yes.
