Trivia / Wrestling Society X

  • All-Star Cast: Some of the best indy talent out there from Ring of Honor, Dragon Gate and Pro Wrestling Guerilla! You had Colt Cabana, Tyler Black, Jimmy Jacobs, Masato Yoshino, T.J. Perkins, Joey Ryan, Genki Horiguchi, Human Tornado, Matt Sydal...
  • Breakup Breakout
    • Out of the entire roster of Wrestling Society X, the most successful alumni would be Tyler Black, who would eventually sign with the WWE and become Seth Rollins, a member of The Shield, one of the most popular wrestling stables of the modern era. After the Shield broke up, he would go on to become WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
    • Ricky Banderas has achieved similar levels of success, but he was already becoming a big name in pro wrestling through IWA Puerto Rico before Wrestling Society X was conceived and had cemented his legacy in AAA before it had finished. He would also later go on to be a major part of Lucha Underground as Mil Muertes. A lesser case was Horiguchi, who would do well in Dragon Gate with his Hage gimmick.
  • Playing Against Type: Matt Sydal - typically a plucky underdog babyface - portrayed a lecherous cocky heel.
  • Screwed by the Network: According to Kevin Kleinrock, MTV was screwing WSX from the beginning: mandating much of the Narm it would become known for (crazy stunts and explosions in every episode), demanding that anything that could be easily replicated by kids removed (to the point of trying to get basic punches and kicks removed and trying to get the infamous flash paper fireball edited into a laser beam or something that didn't remotely resemble fire at all), having the episodes poorly edited and rushed for time, putting them up against WWE's revival of ECW when Kleinrock begged them not to, then pulling the plug a month later on not just WSX but the entire block of male-centric programming it belonged to, which was considered to be underperforming in ratings.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Delirious was supposed to be part of the show, but refused to sign a contract saying they would take part in a full season if it were picked up - as it would have prevented him working with TNA.
    • The show was originally pitched as the Rancid Wrestling Federation, named and themed after after the acclaimed punk rock band who creator Kevin Kleinrock was a huge fan of. The band (big wrestling fans themselves, and who knew Kleinrock from attending indie shows in California) approved of the idea, but turned it down as they did not want to give MTV creative control over their name.
    • Vic Grimes was originally meant to use a black mask to match his sister Nic's, but before the tapings they found it didn't fit him well and they discarded it.
    • Two love triangles were planned for Season 2, with backstage bits taped for them and included in the DVD release. One was Mickie Knuckles and Nic Grimes fighting over Arik Cannon, while the other would've been the reveal of Colt Cabana using the Matt Classic identity to fool around with Lizzy Valentine behind Matt Sydal's back.
    • The Filth and the Fury was originally Teddy Hart and PAC (who would've been known as Steve Lydon), but the latter was a day late picking up his Visa which got Matt Cross in the door instead. A Faceā€“Heel Turn for Hart and team breakup were also in the works.
    • A tournament for the first tag champions and a title that sounded similar to TNA's X-Division title were both in the works for Season 2.
    • According to Kevin Kleinrock, MTV wanted the exploding cage and piranha deathmatches to happen in the very first episode and had to be talked out of it.
    • There have been hints that Fabian Kaelin would've eventually become the mouthpiece for a higher power-type character who was actually running the show.
