Trivia / Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Jasmine marrying and having a child in 10 Years After was written in as a reference to her actress Ayumi Kinoshita having recently gotten married and having a child. The later Hero Mama League was likewise created in light of its three starring actresses, including Kinoshita, having become mothers, and the project was initially suggested by Kinoshita herself.
  • Bonus Episode: Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Super Video: Super-Special Technique Showdown! DekaRed vs. DekaBreak was released with an issue of TV Magazine.
  • Cash-Cow Franchise: The series is enjoying a very prolific life long after its end in 2005; starting with its tribute episode in Gokaiger, the SPD crew has gotten its own 10 Years After movie, its own crossover tie-ins with Space Squad (noting that all other Space Squad crossovers had been with currently airing series, but Dekaranger's was a whole twelve years after the series had ended), and a whole bunch of promotional works to promote the latter (including an appearance in Kyuranger). They even got the opportunity to voice their American counterparts when S.P.D. received a Japanese dub. Of course, it helps that all of the main members of the cast were still available and willing to return, a rarity in Sentai series of its age.
    • Such is the popularity of Dekaranger that its opening was played at the 2018 Super Hero Live — the only opening played there for a show older than Gokaiger.
  • Completely Different Title: The Korean dub refers to the show as Power Rangers SPD. Not to be confused with the American adaptation.
  • Friendship on the Set: All six main cast members are known to still be very good friends even years after the series' broadcast ended, with Tsuyoshi Hayashi (Hoji) and Yosuke Ito (Sen) known to be particularly close, while Mika Kikuchi (Umeko) and Tomokazu Yoshida (Tetsu) even married in 2018 (not technically a case of Romance on the Set since they weren't dating at the time the series was being made, but their mutual acquaintance from being on it together was a contributing factor). While it's not unusual for actors in Toei tokusatsu productions to remain friends afterwards, it's not nearly as common to find cases where a full Sentai group's actors keep in such close contact.
    • To a smaller degree, the Dekaranger cast, especially Kikuchi, is also rather well-acquainted with the cast for its successor series Magiranger due to the many commonalities and points of contact they had (similar age range, working together on the crossover movie, both series being headed by the same producer, and working together on Cho Ninja Tai Inazuma!). According to Kikuchi, it's at least to a degree that's also considered to be uncommon for casts between different Sentai series.
  • Newbie Boom: Due to being the first Sentai to get proper fansubs (with the only other option at the time being Translation Train Wreck-level bootlegs), plus the popularity of its adaptation Power Rangers S.P.D., Dekaranger ended up being an entry gate for Sentai or even Japanese tokusatsu in general until Shinkenger created another large influx.
  • Playing Against Type: Tetsu Inada is usually typecasted as villains due to his deep and menacing voice, so one of the reasons he's so attached to Kruger is that it was a rare role in which he got to play a cool hero.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Tsuyoshi Hayashi had dreamed of starring in Super Sentai and was most pleased to be cast as DekaBlue after previously failing to land the role of Abare Killer.
  • Romance on the Set: On August 31, 2018, DekaPink's actress Mika Kikuchi announced her marriage to Tomokazu Yoshida aka DekaBreak. They weren't dating at the time the series was being produced in 2004 and had happened to meet again when working on a different show years later, but Yoshida stated that their past experience on Dekaranger had helped break the ice a bit.
  • Throw It In!: Ban's signature hairstyle is based on how actor Ryuji Sainei appeared for his audition.
  • What Could Have Been: In an early interview, Naruhisa Arakawa claimed that Agent Abrella represented a greater organization which would be revealed as the series progressed. This ended up ultimately not happening, and a later Arakawa interview revealed that plans had changed midway through because they wanted to portray crime as something close to reality: not something that can be destroyed just by defeating a great evil, but something that'll always exist as long as society does.
    • The character who ultimately became Doggie Kruger was not always set to be a canine, and at one stage it was considered that he would be a more Human Alien played by an actor in make-up. It was also considered that he might be the Last of His Kind from his planet (a concept that was eventually carried over to his counterpart in Power Rangers S.P.D.).
    • As additional Rangers DekaSwan and DekaGold were both female, it was considered that DekaBright would be male. However, writer Michiko Yokote made the case that Tetsu's Stern Teacher should be a woman to defy the norm.
    • As noted on the YMMV page, originally the series was going to be called "Sirenger", but due to an eroge by the name of Tokumei Sentai Sirenger already existing, Toei was unable to secure the copyright.
    • Risa Yoshiki (Fragrantian Erika) tried auditions to get the role of Deka Pink before she was chosen to play Erika.
