Trivia / The Patrick Star Show

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Cree Summer plays both Patrick's mother, Bunny, and a recurring role as Squidward's grandmother.
  • Adored by the Network: It's as expected for something based on the SpongeBob franchise, and Nick tried to push this show by airing at least one episode every day on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons. The marketing for this show (such as having an ice cream truck dedicated to it) is interesting as well, since it was often paired up with Middlemost Post, which premiered on the same day.
  • Approval of God: Doug Walker found the parody of The Nostalgia Critic funny and even posted a short lampooning it. Doug even dressed as his Bubble Bass self for a Halloween video.
  • Blooper: "Stair Wars" has a shot that is obviously unfinished, which was confirmed when the rough boards of the episode shown off at Comic Con had it looking the exact same. While there is a finished version, it seems the rough drawing still made it into the final for whatever reason.
    • This was eventually fixed sometime during 2023, as the episode has started airing with the finished shot. Unfortunately, this change wasn't included on the DVD release.
  • The Cast Showoff: "Get Off My Lawnie" has a song by Cree Summer as Granny Tentacles, including a high note held for 7 seconds straight at the end.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Not the show itself, but in the German dub, the episodes "X Marks the Pot" and "Patrick's Alley" are called "Man Ray's Plan" and "The Star Babysitters".
    • In France, the show is called Patrick Super Star.
    • The European Spanish dub is called Patricio es la Estrella, a Pun-Based Title (Patrick is the Star).
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Pinkeye the male sea bunny is voiced by Jill Talley, who voices Squidina (and Karen on the main series).
  • Early-Bird Release: The Season 1, Volume 1 DVD released three episodes before their airing on US television: "Super Sitters", "Nitwit Neighborhood News", and "Mid-Season Finale". They had aired in foreign countries before then, but this marked their first English release.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Susan Boyajian and Mary Jo Catlett are replaced by Cree Summer as Bunny (formerly Margie) and Squidward's grandmother respectively.
    • Madame Hagfish was voiced by Special Guest Kristen Wiig in her first appearance, "The Curse of the Hex" on SpongeBob. When she reappears in "Terror at 20,000 Leagues" from the Patrick Show, Jill Talley voices her instead.
    • In "X Marks the Pot," Tom Kenny replaces the late R. Lee Ermey as the voice of the Inferno Island warden from the SpongeBob episode "The Inmates of Summer."
    • The Goofy Scoopers on the main show were voiced by Ed Begley Jr. (for Rock T. Puss) and Christopher Guest (for Clem Clam). In "FitzPatrick", all three of them are voiced by the show's composer, Ego Plum.
  • Recast as a Regular: Cree Summer was previously cast as one of several voice actors for the seagulls in The Sponge Bob Movie Sponge Out Of Water before The Patrick Star Show made her the voice of main character Bunny Star and supporting character Granny Tentacles.
  • Recycled Script: "Gas Station Vacation", "Neptune's Ball", "Family Plotz", and "Star Cruise" all follow the formula of "the Stars visit [a gas station/a fancy ball/a cemetery/an alien ship] and their stupidity causes trouble".
  • Role Reprise: Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Jill Talley as Squidina, Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, and Thomas F. Wilson as Patrick's father Cecil (formerly Herb).
  • Schedule Slip: Only two episodes aired in August 2021; they also didn't premiere in the same week, unlike with previous episodes. The show didn't see any new episode premieres until October of that year.
  • Short Run in Peru: In a similar fashion to its parent show, many episodes have aired in foreign countries before the US.
    • "Bunny the Barbarian" aired in the UK and Ireland on October 29, 2021. It premiered in the US a week later on November 5, 2021.
    • "Who's a Big Boy?" aired in the UK and Ireland on November 1, 2021, Australia and New Zealand on December 22, 2021, and the US on March 4, 2022.
    • "Klopnodian Heritage Festival" was released on VOD in New Zealand on December 24, 2021. It aired on network television there on January 20, 2022, and on US television on March 11, 2022.
    • "Pearl Wants to Be a Star" and "Super Sitters" were released through Amazon Prime Video on April 9, 2022. They got pulled a few days later, and the former episode aired on April 15, 2022. However, "Super Sitters" aired in the United States on April 10, 2023, a year and a day after its initial release!
    • "Nitwit Neighborhood News" and "Mid-Season Finale" aired in Italy on May 6, 2022. While they had an Early-Bird Release on DVD, they officially premiered in the US two months later on July 22, 2022.
    • "Shrinking Stars" and "FitzPatrick" were released on Paramount+ in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria on December 25, 2022, and in Canada on January 3, 2023. While "Shrinking Stars" premiered on network television on January 13, 2023, "FitzPatrick" took until April 11, 2023.
    • "The Commode Episode", "Tying the Klop-Knot", "Chum Bucket List", and "Big Baby Patrick" were released on Paramount+ in Australia and New Zealand in late November 2023. They hadn't even been scheduled to air in the US at that time!
  • Shrug of God: Whether or not Squidina is adopted has been inconclusive. The page for the series on Nick's website as well as the pitch bible mention the Stars assuming she is just a weird looking sea star. Storyboard artist April "Pinkie" Davis said she believes Squidina is adopted when answering a question from a fan, but the series itself has no direct evidence regarding this claim.
    • In "The Patterfly Effect", when Patrick goes back in time to make Bunny part race-car, both he and Squidina have wheels in the future, suggesting that Bunny is her biological mother. Additionally, her maternal grandmother, Agnes Steelhead, is a squid that vaguely resembles her granddaughter.
  • What Could Have Been: The show's pitch bible outlines a few early concepts for the show.
    • One of the show's biggest appeals compared to SpongeBob and Kamp Koral would have been the lack of a traditional, 11 minute narrative. The show would instead switch between various skits and set pieces, going wherever Patrick's whims take him. Oftentimes, the real-world problems that Patrick encounters would affect how his show played out or what it was themed after. Effectively, a Random Events Plot combined with a Variety Show. While remnants of this can be seen early on, the show abandoned this after the first few episodes.
    • Rather than being distinguished through a shirt, Patrick was to wear an overly-tight blue tie around his neck. This got a Development Gag in "Bummer Jobs," where the start of the episode has Patrick trying to put on a tie and ending up strangling himself.
    • The Patrick Show isn't mentioned to have a dedicated audience in the pitch bible, merely relegated to Ouchie or whoever happens to be passing by on the street. This aspect would be dropped with later episodes like "Host-a-Palooza", "FitzPatrick", and "Neptune's Ball" depicting Patrick's show with a dedicated fanbase.
    • The characters' designs were also different. All of the Stars were pink just like Patrick. Bunny was blonde and wore a teal dress with dark blue flowers on it. Cecil wore a beige/tan version of his normal outfit. GrandPat also lacked his sweater and pants, simply looking like an older version of Patrick.
    • One early idea was GrandPat and Squidward being friends over the fact that they can have intelligent conversations and agree on how dumb the rest of the Star family are. This never came up on the show, and "Backpay Payback" implies that GrandPat still doesn't like Squidward, preferring to carry on their family history of Stars avoiding Tentacles and cheating them out of their money.
    • Squidina had a completely different design, looking closer to her main-series design in "Goons on the Moon": she has braces and is much taller, and was meant to be 11 years old instead of 8. Her character description also mentions her being a Straight Man and more "deadpan, serious" counterpart to Patrick. This aspect didn't stick in the show; while she's definitely responsible, Squidina likes to partake in Patrick's crazy antics when she can. Bits of her earlier personality can be seen in "Enemies a la Mode," which has a rare instance of her getting genuinely upset at Patrick and then trying to carry on the show without him.
    • In a rare case of something being axed, then brought back: Patrick's Time Machine was to be operated with a "Wheel of Time" on the front. However, in the show, characters always used dials or buttons for it, with the wheel being a nondescript design element. The wheel started being used regularly with the new crew taking over, in episodes like "A Space Affair to Remember" and "Neptune's Ball".
    • While some of the themed segments did make it in, like Pat the Hapless, many others were cut. This includes Patrick as a detective or a pirate, romantic tales of him falling in love with random objects like a TV or a ham sandwich, the return of Mermaid Pants and Barnacle Star from the main show, and SpongeBob and Sandy joining Patrick on an outer space adventure.
    • Cave Patrick's appearances were to be done in Stop Motion. In the final show, this got moved to Dr. Plankenstein's segments.
    • It's described that Squidward lives in a baby version of his Easter island head. In the show proper, it's implied that he lives with Granny Tentacles (in "Backpay Payback" and "Get Off My Lawnie").
    • "Enemies a la Mode" features two ideas that were intended to be recurring bits on the show: Ouchie and Pinkeye's zany slapstick battles and Patrick's rivalry with a Goofy Goober ice cream guy. Both would all but disappear from the show after the episode.
  • Word of St. Paul:
    • According to storyboard supervisor Ian Vazquez and background artist Sterling Ricter, the series takes place in the nearby suburb of Ukulele Bottom. This is visibly shown in the episode "House Hunting", in which Squidina leads the sentient Star house back to the backyard by feeding it coffee beans. It Makes Sense in Context. It was explained on Ian's twitter that Ukulele Bottom is often described as being part of the greater Bikini Bottom area, explaining the inconsistencies regarding its mentioning on the show.
      • However, due to a combination of Ian leaving the show to resume working on SpongeBob full-time and the new crew not knowing about this, this tidbit was seemingly ignored and inadvertently retconned out of existence by the second half of season one.
    • As mentioned above, storyboardist April "Pinkie" Davis believes Squidina was adopted by the Star family but the evidence supporting or denying this is inconclusive.
