Overall Trivia

  • B-Team Sequel: While there was no official reboot, the tone shifted notably between the Tim Burton–helmed Batman (1989) and Batman Returns and the Joel Schumacher–helmed Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
  • Cast the Runner-Up:
  • Creator's Pest: Robin doesn't appear in either Batman (1989) or Batman Returns because both Tim Burton and screenwriter Daniel Waters hated him. To quote Waters:
One of our big bonding issues is me and Tim Burton hate Robin. He's just the most worthless character in the world, especially with Tim's conception of Batman as the loner of loners, to have this gushing boy run around, it made us both kind of sick to our stomachs!
  • The Other Darrin
  • Role Reprise:
  • Screwed by the Merchandise: A famous case. Arguably, McDonald's Happy Meal toys were the downfall of this film series. Parents felt that the Darker and Edgier second film in the series was inappropriate for children's toys, so the action figures went unsold. McDonald's was a strong supporter of the first film, so Warner Bros. insisted on a change in dramatic tone. So creators were changed, Joel Schumacher replaced Tim Burton and the third film was Lighter and Softer with more colorful characters and vehicles which could be translated into more action figures. This worked, and toys sold. However, there's an argument that the tone shift contributed to the fourth film not doing as well as the previous entries. Many working on Batman Forever commented that it was the first time they learned of the term "toyetic", which meant toy-friendly design decisions, such as the batmobile having only a single seat because that was easier to replicate as a toy. Decades later, Joker almost didn't happen because Warner Bros. executives were concerned that the film was not "toyetic".
  • Shrug of God: In regards to why Alexander Knox's newspaper in Crisis on Infinite Earths states that the Joker was captured by Batman if he died in the first film, Marc Guggenheim and the crew imagined that Jack Napier either came back to life or was replaced by a Legacy Character in the intervening 30 years between Batman '89 and the crossover.
  • What Could Have Been: Reports and rumors abound of what the planned fifth film in the series (titled Batman Unchained by most sources, and alleged by some to act as a series Grand Finale) would've been like. Some of the wildest rumors even said that there were talks to have Jack Nicholson reprise his role as a Back from the Dead Joker.
  • Word of God: According to Sam Hamm, the co-writer of the first film and the writer of Batman '89, the Burton films take place on Earth-89 while the Schumacher films take place on Earth-97.
