The Sociopath / Grand Theft Auto

Go To

Due to sociopaths' penchant for committing crimes and causing harm, it's not surprising that the Grand Theft Auto series has plenty of them.

  • Grand Theft Auto III:
    • Claude is easily the GTA protagonist who best fits the criteria for anti-social personality disorder. The guy absolutely lacks remorse, guilt, or empathy; leads a life of crime very willingly, betrays and kills his former allies as if he had no conscience, and ultimately seems to lead a life of crime simply for the money he earns from killing others, as well as seeking revenge on the psychotic woman who betrayed him. Even the closest thing he has to a Pet the Dog moment in rescuing Maria seems to be challenged at the end. What makes Claude exceptionally sociopathic is that, unlike most GTA protagonists, he doesn't even have a Freudian Excuse or even a tragic event that motivated him to take up a life of crime, all we know is that he was an illegal race runner and that's it, which gives us a sign that he was already leading an illegal life even before he met Catalina.
    • Catalina, also from GTA: San Andreas, is a prime example of a sociopath with poor impulse control. She frequently shows signs of mishandling aggressiveness, has unpremeditated and thoughtless behavior, commits crimes out of hobby rather than necessity, enjoys stealing and killing, lacks any kind of empathy or remorse, is not loyal to anyone, and seems to have forgotten Carl after meeting Claude (it's very common in sociopaths to have short-lived emotions). GTA III also shows that she is incredibly manipulative, and has no problem betraying her promises, as evidenced in the final mission.
    • Donald Love, also from GTA: Liberty City Stories, has the typical characteristics of a sociopath: he is impeccably charming and a great conversationalist; however, he is also an incredibly depraved man who is absolutely devoid of any kind of remorse, conscience or morals. He is also incredibly self-centered and narcissistic, and would commit any kind of atrocity to line his pockets or glorify his ego.
    • Marty Chonks, the psychopathic owner of the Bitch'n' Dog Food factory in Trenton, which has fallen on hard times due to the ban on dogs. He makes Claude do dirty work by bringing various people he suspects of causing his bankruptcy to the factory to kill them, disposing of their bodies by putting them into his dog food. Among the people he kills two crooks he hired to break into his house so he could claim the insurance, only to fear that they could rat out on him, and his own wife who he suspects is spending his money. Some players cheered when Chonks’ last mission ended with Carl, his own loan shark, killing him.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City:
    • Lance Vance fits the criteria for antisocial disorder very well. Unlike Tommy, who at least has loyalty and his fair share of Evil Virtues, Lance largely lacks it. Shallow charm? He is a great talker and possesses enough charisma to trick and manipulate others for his own personal gain, such as when he convinced his brother to go into the drug market in GTA: Vice City Stories. Excessive self-worth? He loves to talk about himself about how cool he is and has a very high self-perception. Impulsiveness? He is prone to doing foolish things out of his ego. Irresponsibility? He is a complete parasite who only causes trouble towards others. Not to mention the final betrayal, which is possibly his lowest point in the game's storyline, cementing himself as completely selfish and disloyal.
    • Although not much information is known about his personality, Sonny Forelli fulfills most of the most predominant traits of sociopathy, despite his limited screen time. He is superficially charming towards Tommy, shows no trace of remorse or guilt, and has very poor self-control and a low tolerance for frustration, as evidenced when he calls out to Tommy in an incredibly furious manner.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas:
    • Officer Frank Tenpenny. If someone were tasked with listing out all of Tenpenny's defining character attributes, all they'd have to do is a textbook of sociopathy and nobody would be able to tell the difference: superficial charm, a grandiose sense of self, a fundamental incapacity for human empathy, willful and repeated exploitation of others without compassion or remorse, pathological lying, a constant need for stimulation (his evil acts are done primarily for his own amusement), a complete inability to form genuine emotional attachments to anyone, and poor impulse control. All of these traits are attributes that Tenpenny displays frequently throughout the story, in addition to intimidating and threatening Carl, causing unnecessary harm, murdering those who want to expose his corruption, among other things.
    • Eddie Pulaski is just as sociopathic as Tenpenny, though without the superficial charm or pragmatism that characterizes the latter. And unlike Hernandez, who is nothing more than a Punch-Clock Villain, Pulaski manages to be a particularly sadistic Psycho for Hire who willingly participates in some of Tenpenny's nastier crimes. He is also even more impulsive than Tenpenny, being particularly violent and threatening Carl with death on many occasions.
    • T-Bone Mendez is an utter psycho who's willing to kill or torture anyone to keep his business afloat, and his sense of humor reflects that.
    • Mike Toreno certainly qualifies as an example of a highly-functional sociopath. There is no doubt that Toreno is incredibly cold, false, manipulative, ruthless, a Consummate Liar, is the head of a large-scale criminal operation, and he has no qualms about betraying others to further his goals after earning their trust. On the other hand, he is also incredibly methodical, brilliant, pragmatic, and while he has no qualms about sending Carl on dangerous life-and-death missions, at least he didn't betray his promises and promised to free his brother from jail, an example that not all sociopaths can be completely mean and dishonest.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories:
    • Toni Cipriani himself, possibly. Although his loyalty to Salvatore Leone is unquestionable, throughout the game he shows very few positive emotions, is easily irritated and aggressive, gets angry easily, is prone to extremely violent acts when he sets his mind to it, and has absolutely no problem in committing heinous acts under the orders of Donald Love and Ned Burner.
    • Vincenzo Cilli, who, from the start, shows an unpleasantly controlling, vain, ruthless, disloyal and tempestuous personality. He also shows a very weak façade of being charming despite being incredibly petty, and has no qualms about betraying the Leone crime family out of spite.
    • Ned Burner is a sociopathic journalist for the Liberty Tree newspaper who poses as a priest and sends Toni to commit a series of atrocities so he can report on it in the paper.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories:
    • Jerry Martinez is the Big Bad of the story who, during the course of the game, shows absolutely no loyalty, morals, or conscience. He is also incredibly manipulative, malicious, deceitful, and spends most of the game being a major problem for Vic, culminating in him raping and injuring Louise. Like many sociopaths, he hides his maliciousness through superficial charm by being a great conversationalist and having a great sense of humor.
    • Marty Jay Williams is an alcoholic redneck who could be considered a low-functioning sociopath with poor impulse control. Unlike the other examples listed, he lacks any kind of charm and is incredibly unpleasant. However, what he lacks in charm he makes up for by being a violent thug.
    • Armando Mendez is a classic example of a ruthless and violent sociopath hiding behind the facade of being charismatic and Faux Affably Evil. His sociopathic behavior is best evidenced with the kidnapping and brutal murder of Louise.
  • Grand Theft Auto IV:
    • Being a sadistic, hypocritical jerk with zero remorse or loyalty, Dimitri Rascalov is perhaps one of the best examples of a true sociopath played completely straight in the game. This quote by Niko Bellic (in the Deal Ending) puts him best:
"You're a strange man. You killed your best friend. You betrayed everyone who ever came in contact with you. You killed my cousin. I guess...the survival of the fittest thing really meant a lot to you."
    • Eddie Low manages to be a perfect example of a low-functioning sociopath. He lacks any sort of superficial charm or impulse control, being a Serial Killer and rapist who isn't particularly eloquent or cunning in his acting.
  • Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned:
    • Billy Grey. Johnny eventually realizes the hard way that his childhood friend Billy has become this at heart. He cares little for others, and constantly and needlessly put his club in danger for profit and other forms of self-destructive hedonism. He is also incredibly manipulative, violent, and willingly starts a very unnecessary gang war. And when it all comes crashing down on him, he eventually decides to rat out his own club,(again, some of which were his childhood friends) to save his own skin.
    • Although not as obvious as Billy Grey, Brian Jeremy meets several criteria for sociopathy: he has enough charisma and charm to get some bikers to rally around him against Johnny, is exceptionally spiteful, petty, haughty; lacks of any kind of redeemable traits, honor, morals or integrity; and he has no problem betraying his own gang on a whim.
  • Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony: Ray Bulgarin is an example of a sociopath with exceptionally violent behavior and poor impulse control. Even before his betrayal of Luis, he was still a violent psycho with an inability to feel remorse and a tendency to engage in extremely homicidal behavior.
  • Grand Theft Auto V:
    • Steve Haines. From the get-go, he comes off as an eccentric sociopath with a shallow charm. He also lacks any kind of empathy, remorse or conscience, as evidenced when he has an innocent immigrant suspect of terrorism brutally tortured. After he finishes that session of Cold-Blooded Torture, he happily skips off to go play racquetball.
    • Devin Weston. Not as obvious as Steve Haines, but he does have quite a few antisocial personality traits: superficial charm, scamming employees without a hint of remorse, and uncontrollable rage when things don't go his way. He also lacks any meaningful relationship with anyone: He isn't in mourning when Molly dies, he refers to Steve as a clown he can have fired at random, and his ostensible business partner Don Percival isn't at all upset when Devin bites it.
    • Peter Dreyfuss is a particularly sociopathic filmmaker who, thanks to his position as a celebrity, has managed to get away several particularly twisted crimes he committed For the Evulz. Like Eddie Low, he is a low-functioning sociopath with an unbridled need for stimulation and poor impulse control.
    • Avon Hertz from GTA Online: The Doomsday Heist has the pride, egotism, and pathologically violent behavior of a classic sociopath/psychopath, and a chameleon-like personality.
