Tear Jerker / Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

Go To

  • The series-long storyline about Zoey's dad, who's suffering from PSP.
  • The scene in the pilot episode where Zoey's musical telepathy picks up Simon's "heart song". This knocks Zoey a bit for a loop, as up until then Simon was a fun-loving, sociable, caring guy who acted completely happy-go-lucky. So, what's his heart song? The Gary Jules cover of "Mad World". You read that right. During the song, Zoey finds him at his desk, far away from her and Leif, looking at the picture of him and his father (whom we later learned committed suicide a month before) while crying. To make matters more tearjerking is the one moment Simon looks up at Zoey during the lyrics "I find it hard to tell you, 'cause I find it hard to take" as though he's singing to Zoey directly, and John Clarence Stewart's teary-eyed and vulnerable performance sells it.
  • Mo's predicament in Zoey's Extraordinary Neighbor.
  • Mitch's funeral in the Season 1 finale, set to "American Pie".
    • Really, the entire episode, after the Bad Moon Rises.
  • The "Fight Song" scene.
  • Zoey singing "I Want You to Want Me" to Simon is remarkably moving, since Jane Levy sounds so sincerely vulnerable and tender.
  • The whole scene where Zoey sings "How Do I Live" to her father. Special mention goes to when she sings the line "And if you ever leave, you would take away everything good in my life" and Mitch sadly looks at Zoey and is cupping her cheek as she sings.
    • That entire episode was a Wham Episode for Zoey as she found out that her father's condition was irreversible and he would die very soon.
  • Most of Zoey's Extraordinary Reckoning, especially Tobin singing "Track Of My Tears".
  • Emily's suffering from postpartum depression in season 2.
  • In Zoey's Extraordinary Double Date, Mo's boyfriend confesses that despite being attracted to loud and proud types, he's still suffering from internal homophobia, and Mo makes it clear that he's not going back to being repressed, for anyone. It's also a stark contrast to the nonsense offscreen breakup earlier in the season with his then-boyfriend.
  • Zoey's Extraordinary Session has a flashback to Maggie having a mild heart attack with Mitch gushing on how he can't lose her and Maggie telling him that it would be okay for him to move on. Tearful enough but even more so considering what happens to them.
  • Mitch appearing in Zoey's dreams in the season 2 finale, and encouraging her to move on with her life and enjoy it with a moving rendition of "I Lived".
