Simon’s dad did not kill himself and Zoey will find out when the killer sings about it
Perhaps Zoey’s weird ability comes from Simon’s dad possessing her or possessing others so he can let people know? Zoey is a mutant.
Unless there are more people with similar abilities in this universe, it seems unlikely that an earthquake (a common occurrence in California) during an MRI (a scan that many people are subjected to frequently) alone would be enough grant an ordinary person telepathy-adjacent superpowers. However, if Zoey already possessed some kind of latent psychic powers, then a traumatic incident like an earthquake happening to her when her claustrophobic-self is inside the MRI machine could be enough to switch the powers from latent to active.
Season 2
The lyric in the final number of season 1, "the day the music died", indicates that Zoey will lose her powers. This will probably only be temporary if the show is renewed for a second season.

In contrast to how she embraced her gift and tries to help others, they're bitterly resentful of the condition and have become an anti-social recluse to avoid dealing with it. Zoey will gradually help them see the value in it and in turn will learn from them how to take solitary time for herself when she needs to.- Possibly confirmed in the season 2 finale: Max hears Zoey's own heart song.
Zoey will accidently hear another character come out accidently in song.
She'll feel bad, but will try to get the character to come out for real.
