Trivia / Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

  • The Cast Showoff:
    • All the characters sing well during heart songs, but not necessarily outside of them. However, Skylar Astin, known for his appearances in the Pitch Perfect franchise, does his own singing.
    • There's also Broadway musical veteran Peter Gallagher doing the same.
  • Channel Hop: It was believed internally that the show, a middling performer on NBC but with a stronger footprint of Hulu and Peacock, had a good shot at being moved to the latter service, and indeed the series was under consideration by the streamer. However, on the same day that the show's NBC cancellation was announced, it was also reported that Peacock had rejected the series as well, leaving Lionsgate Television to attempt shopping it elsewhere. Eventually, Roku signed on to produce a TV movie for the series instead.
  • Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Sandra Mae Frank, who plays deaf college student Abigail, is deaf in real life.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Joan was supposed to have a larger role in season 2, but Lauren Graham was only able to appear in the first episode. This is because delays caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic caused a conflict with The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, and Graham couldn't do both at the same time.
  • Stunt Casting: Bernadette Peters is one of the biggest names in musical theater. She appears in the eleventh episode as a widow named Deb who bonds with Maggie and definitely gets to sing. Deb recurs after that.
  • What Could Have Been: Jackie Hoffman was originally cast as Deb, but had to drop out at the last minute due to a death in the family.
  • Write What You Know: Like Zoey, creator Austin Winsberg also had a father with PSP.
