Tear Jerker / Who Killed Markiplier?

Go To

Just because it's a comedic, cliché-ridden murder mystery (which is not a bad thing, mind you), it doesn't mean the story is completely free of sad moments. In fact, one could even say that this story has more of these moments than the ones it's inspired from.

WARNING: As is the case with most Tear Jerker pages, SPOILERS ARE UNMARKED! Read at your own risk!!

    Who Killed Markiplier?
  • While starting off as a comedic murder mystery, the four part miniseries "Who Killed Markiplier?" takes a sad turn in the fourth and final part. The Colonel becomes convinced that the Detective orchestrated the series' events and engages him in a standoff, ultimately shooting him dead. When the District Attorney tries to wrestle the Colonel's gun away from him, they get shot as well. The DA then enters the "Upside Down" and encounters the spirits of Damien the Mayor and Celine the Seer, who reveal that Mark killed himself and used magic from the House to take Damien's body in an act of vengeance. Celine uses her powers to revive Damien, herself, and the DA in the latter's body. The Colonel, who had been regretting his actions and waiting by the DA's body for ten hours, pondering their death, witnesses them return to life and goes insane, believing his friends played a cruel prank on him. Word of God confirms this is the origin of Wilford Warfstache and why he treats death as a joke; he sincerely thinks people will just come back and laugh about it. Watching the Colonel shuffle off desperately calling out to his friends and knowing what becomes of him is so heartwrenching, even Mark said he didn't realize how tragic it was until editing. Furthermore, due to the evil house entity corrupting their souls, Celine and Damien return as a malevolent force made of the worst traits of themselves, revealed at the very end of the video to be Darkiplier, who imprisons the DA's soul in the house, taking full control of their body, then departs to exact revenge on Markiplier.
    • In essence, the entire miniseries was a tragic origin story: the Colonel went insane and became Wilford Warfstache while Damien the Mayor and Celine the Seer became a horrible sliver of themselves merged into Darkiplier.
  • Combined with Nightmare Fuel, Abe's Curse. Anyone who partners up with him is destined for a tragic death. While this is upsetting for anyone who partners up with him, imagine how it affects Abe. He has to live with the fact that every one of his partners died on his watch and he couldn't do anything about it.
  • Poor, poor Damien; one of his best friends dies on the night that they were supposed to be having a good time, after a long time apart no less, and he's the only one who really cares about Mark's death. He ends up dying when Celine's ritual goes awry and has his body stolen by Mark, leaving him trapped in the upside-down with Celine. After the viewer dies, the House enacts the final step of its plan and merges the souls of Damien and Celine with itself and steals the body of the District Attorney, eradicating all of their positive qualities in the process, becoming shells of their former selves. The worst part about all of this is that Damien did nothing to deserve any of this; he just happened to be a casualty of it all.

Interview #69: Benjamin Butler

  • It seems nobody is safe from the effects of Markiplier Manor: Benjamin jumps whenever he hears the word "murder", expecting lightning. Seemingly the events of Who Killed Markiplier? left him with some form of PTSD. His reputation was also tarnished because many people in-universe believe that he killed Mark despite the fact that the Colonel is the one responsible.
  • Benjamin is still mourning the death of Mark almost a year after he died, and it's made very clear in his interview livestream that he misses him dearly and would do anything to get him back.
  • Benjamin stated in his interview livestream that Mark and Celine were Happily Married, and describes that they were practically made for each other. As such, he's confused as to why they broke apart. However, we, as the viewer know that Markiplier Manor is capable of manipulating others into doing things they wouldn't normally do for the sake of forwarding it's plan. Then you realize that Markiplier Manor most likely was responsible for breaking apart the two because it would help it achieve it's escape plan, despite how happy they were together.

Wilford 'MOTHERLOVIN'' Warfstache

  • Mixes with Heartwarming; Wilford consoling Abe after the latter realizes he's been going through an endless nightmare, and reassuring him that he's not crazy.

DAMIEN

  • Damien willingly letting himself become corrupted to become the villain The Actor wants him to be so that Celine can finally rest.
  • Actor!Markiplier has been fully corrupted by his time in the manor, becoming a narcissistic egomaniac without any traces of empathy.

The Warstache Automated Interview Automaton

  • The WAIA is made from Wilford’s own brain scan, so hearing it say “I didn’t know the gun was loaded… was it my fault?” is heartbreaking.
