In General
- Avatar: The Last Airbender:
- The naming conventions of each season by being a numbered book named after an attribute that the season focuses on.
- The ocean symbol resembles the Water Tribe emblem.
- Played for laughs in one scene in Book 3, in which boomerang comes back.
- In season 4, Soren rides a dragon and gets it to start moving by saying "Yip yip!"
- Aang's original glider and Sokka's boomerang are among the treasures in Rex Igneous' lair.
- The creators have said that Fire Emblem inspired a lot of the visuals. This is perhaps most apparent with Amaya's giant shield.
- Claudia and Soren match the common duo in Fire Emblem games of a dark-robed, powerful but ditzy wizard, and her put-upon sword-wielding body guard.
- Claudia later has elements of the Undying Loyalty tragic woman who refuses to leave the side of her loved ones. Not even Viren's war crimes and death stop her.
- Speaking of which, she hero-worships Viren in much the same way that Lyon hero-worshiped Vigarde.
- Soren (Senerio) is the tactician for Ike's army in the Tellius duology (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance / Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn). One of the biggest reveals in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is Soren is the missing dragon prince.
- Soren is pretty much an Expy of Zephiel.
- Both have short blond hair and are clean-shaven at first but grow stubble as they become more cynical about their fathers.
- Both are skilled warriors and generals.
- Both initially work hard to please their fathers.
- Both have sisters whom they love, but Parental Favoritism gets in the way of their relationship.
- Both eventually realize that their fathers will never accept them and are irredeemably evil.
- When push comes to shove, both are willing to stab their fathers to death.
- In a conflict between humans and dragons, both side with the dragons.
- League of Legends:
- Runaan is named for the item Runaan's Hurricane, which in itself was named after writer Devon Giehl's night elf hunter player character.
- Warhammer:
- The runes on the frame of the magic mirror are Warhammer High Elven runes.
- ElfQuest:
- Elves have Four-Fingered Hands.
Book 1: Moon
- Avatar: The Last Airbender: The book Claudia is reading is called "Love Amongst the Dragons", which was the name of the play that Zuko and his family would watch when they were younger, and Ursa acted in the play before she was wed to Ozai.
- Soren catches Callum's attempt to attack his foot. Callum claims he was trying to "sweep the leg".
- King Harrow tells Callum that "winter is coming... eventually." note
- Callum's "Jerkface dance" sounds similar to the Arusians' in Voltron: Legendary Defender, where they made a "Dance of apology" to Allura and the group.Callum: It is a dance of stupitude and sorryness.
- The spell used to temporarily render Callum mute will look very familiar to fans of Disney.
- In episode 4, the key phrase to tell Bait to glow is, "Say hello to my little friend."
- In the end credits of "The Cursed Caldera", one of the images is of Ava (and Bait) holding a sword with her mouth identically to Greatwolf Sif from Dark Souls.
- When first seeing the egg of the Dragon Prince, Rayla exclaims "This changes everything!", which is the phrase spoken in the intro of another Netflix series featuring dragons.
- The finale episode of season 1 shares the same name as the animation studio creating this show.
Book 2: Sky
- When Ellis says goodbye to the group, she says "Don't you forget about me. Don't, don't, don't.", which is a reference to the Simple Minds song "Don't You (Forget About Me)", the theme song for the movie The Breakfast Club.
- Villads's name is a Creator Cameo of the supervising director, Villads Spansberg.
- Lord of the Rings:
- Two statues at the Moon Nexus have almost the exact same pose as the statues at Argonath.
- Callum explains that "One does not simply walk into Xadia!" He even makes the same hand gesture that Boromir did.
- Sailor Moon:
- Sarai tells Harrow that he'll be a "champion of love and justice".
- In episode 7, Rayla does the Sailor Moon pose when describing how the power of the moon feels to her when she uses it.
- Amaya allowing her sister to jump on top of her shield and then use her strength to push her up is a reference to a move used by Wonder Woman and the Amazons.
- In the end credits, Aaravos holds his grail the same way as Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) held his wine glass in The Great Gatsby, which is a widespread meme gif.
- In episode 7, Soren exclaims "Everything's coming up Soren!".
- "Captain Villads! The D is silent."
Book 3: Sun
- Avatar: The Last Airbender: Doubles as Actor Allusion. In episode 4, Callum is entranced by one of the boomerangs on Nyx's staff, saying that it feels strangely familiar.Callum: Boomerang?
- The episode's end credits feature Callum holding Sokka's boomerang.
- In the end credits for episode 5, Callum has apparently drank some cactus juice.
It's the quenchiest! - In episode 4, Nyx explains the oasis is protected by a magical barrier. Doubles as a Stealth Pun.
- Lujanne's transformation into a human is clearly a nod towards the way Sailor Moon always transforms.
- Callum also does the Sailor Moon pose when revealing to Nyx that he's human.
- Nyx in episode 5: "Why did it have to be soulfangs?"
- In episode 6, Viren splits the lava river at the border of Xadia for his army to cross, holding a dark mirror to Moses.
- "Why did it have to be soulfangs?"
- "My little brother, all grown up and riding dragons."
- Moonstriders, Shadowpaws, and Twin-Tailed Inferno-Tooth Tigers look more than a bit like greathounds and valmeras.
- The Final Battle: When the dragons breathe fire on Viren's army and they rise again, they look just like the skeletons in the opening cinematic of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.
Book 4: Earth
- The badge given to the baker as a new member of the royal council is the Hand of the King badge from Game of Thrones with a whisk instead of the blade.
- The shorter of Umber Tor's gate Golem's resembles Darunia from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, while the tall one resembles Vivi.
- In episode 3, Terry flirts with Claudia using a phrase from To Have And Have Not: "You know how to whistle... just put your lips together and blow."
- Episode 5:
- In the credits, Terry holds a piece of goop that looks like Flubber, and the Golems are shown with a rock with a face on it just like the one from Over the Garden Wall.
- Uncharted:
- In episode 5, N'than of the Drakewood guides the dragang through the Uncharted forest. One of the end credit drawings even shows him recreating◊ the iconic cover of the second game.
- Episode 6 continues the reference with an end credits sketch◊ that shows N'than replicating his namesake iconic pose from the cover of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
- Episode 6: A young boy from a village that hunts dragons finds an incredibly rare one downed, but he ends up letting it free out of his conscience. That sounds familiar.
- Likewise, Soren attempting to befriend the dragon in the Pit of Despair has him reach out his hand for her snout.
- In episode 7, Callum tries to dispose of his rune cube by dropping it in lava but can't go through with it, just as Isildur couldn't destroy the One Ring.

- In episode 7, Soren rides a dragon and gets it to start moving by saying "Yip yip!"

Book 5: Ocean
- In episode 2, one setting of Viren's fever dream resembles the Red Room from Twin Peaks, including people talking backwards, Opeli playing the Log Lady and The Chrysalis Child as the Man from Another Place dancing to Creepy Jazz Music.
- Viren's first fever dream where he's slowly falling amidst events in his life mimics the opening to Mad Men.
- While celebrating his and Kazi's discovery of the Novablade, Callum does the Carlton dance.
- In episode 6, one of the merchants at Bright Hope Cove can be heard peddling self-sealing stem bolts.
- Claudia uses a Purple pentapus to create a spell to breathe underwater, which is also a creature from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both versions of the Octopods are drawn swimming together in the end credits.
- The Mushroom Mage introduces himself singing to the tune of "The Muffin Man."
- Episode 7:
- A guard is overheard basically describing a Sausage Egg McMuffin he had for breakfast.
- The corridor fight shares a lot of similarities to Darth Vader's fight in Rogue One.
