Shout Out / Zombieland

Go To

  • The opening scenes are chock full of shout outs to other zombie movies:
    • The shout out to the Dawn of the Dead (2004) remake with the woman who has little girl zombies in her neighborhood. Also the opening moments in front of the White House is another shout out to the same movie.
    • The stripper zombie is a shout to the ones in Resident Evil: Apocalypse.
  • A subtle one from World War Z. In the book, a guy in the Long Island mansion brags about his exact copy of Tony Montana's AK-47 from Scarface (1983), despite the fact that Montana used an M-16. Cue Zombieland's opening, with a guy dressed as Tony wielding a Kalashnikov.
  • Towards the end of the standoff between Columbus and Tallahassee when they first meet, the watch chime from For a Few Dollars More is used.
  • "I'm more of a Sancho Panza character."
  • This exchange:
Columbus (narrating): Asskicking was his business, and-
    Tallahassee: Business is good.
  • Tallahassee makes a few references to Deliverance during the supermarket scene, the banjo being one aaaand...
    "You got a purty mouth!"
  • "I hate to give credit to a guy who looks like Yosemite Sam, but I'm writing it down! Rule #32: Enjoy the little things."
  • The Gas n' Gulp station may be a reference to the iconic gas chain in The Simpsons.
  • At Hollywood, there's posters for 2012.
  • The entrance to Bill Murray's mansion is filmed and framed similarly to the early stage of the first Resident Evil game when the characters enter the Spencer Mansion, it even has a similar staircase.
  • Given the involvement of Murray, movies starring him such as Ghostbusters (1984) (which Columbus shows to Little Rock and the others play pretend as), Garfield (Bill's only regret) and Caddyshack (in an unused take between Tallahassee and a dying Murray put as an after credits Stinger) are brought up.
  • "You know what they call Twinkies in Mexico?"
  • Tallahassee's "farewell" to Columbus is "That'll do, pig" from Babe. Columbus even calls him out on it.
  • "Fasten your seatbelt, it's going to be a bumpy ride."
  • Tallahassee's ride on a roller coaster swarming with zombies brings to mind rail shooters like House of the Dead, especially CarnEvil, which, as it suggests, has you on a roller coaster fighting zombies.
  • At the end, all Wichita needed was a red jacket to match her Zoey ponytail.
