Shameful Strip / Film

  • Some films from the cannibal exploitation films, will use this trope before the character suffers a gruesome death.
  • At the end of Agora, Hypatia is captured by an angry mob and stripped naked, with the mob then calling her a whore.
  • In the 1974 sexploitation movie The Arena (aka Naked Warriors), the newly purchased female slaves refuse to remove their already tattered robes in public so they can be bathed. A couple of lusty Italian men eagerly take on the job.
Trailer: Women stripped of their dignity, piece by piece!
  • In the Robert Bresson film Au Hasard Balthazar, the most sympathetic human character (it's a film about a donkey) is a girl named Marie, who falls in love with the wrong guy. In one of the most upsetting scenes in the movie, she's trapped in a derelict house and the camera follows the gang of her boyfriend and his mates running off with her clothes, followed by a lingering shot of her huddling naked in the house and weeping.
  • The climax of Batman (1989) appears to be heading in this direction, with The Joker taking Vicki Vale up to the top of the Gotham City Cathedral at gunpoint. He removes Vicki's shoes and throws them down the stairs, then removes her coat and drapes it over the railing... leaving Vicki wearing only a sheer white dress not unlike the standard woman's "shift" undergarment from the Renaissance era or earlier (and they are in a Gothic cathedral). More to the point, the Joker makes sure that Batman, who is pursuing him, comes across these discarded articles of clothing on his way up the stairs, possibly as a means of taunting him. Whatever the case, Vicki was lucky that cathedral tower wasn't any taller... (Oh, and during the dance sequence one of Vicki's dress straps slips almost all the way off her shoulder, thus bringing up another trope.)
  • In Big Bad Mama II, Robert Culp is forced to strip at gunpoint by Angie Dickenson (the eponymous Mama). Arguably also a Defeat by Modesty since she wants to discourage Culp (a muckraking journalist) from following her and her daughters and notes that a naked man might find difficulty hitchhiking in the rural South during the Depression.
  • Birds of Prey (2020): Mob boss Roman Sionis/Black Mask sees a woman in his nightclub named Erika laughing and automatically assumes she is laughing at him. He forces her to stand on a table and dance, then orders her to take off her dress. When she is too slow, he forces her date at gunpoint to cut it off with a knife.
  • A more downplayed version in Blackburn in which one of the female characters spend most of the movie wearing a pink hoodie over her white tank top, but when she's being held captive by the ones that are attacking her and the other survivors, she only has her pink hoodie stripped off, while she keeps her tank top and rest of clothing.
  • Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: Etta, a schoolmarm, returns home and is surprised to find Sundance, an outlaw, waiting for her. At gunpoint, he tells her to strip, which she spitefully does. It looks like it's all a preamble to rape, but then Etta chastises Sundance for always coming home late. It's a Bait-and-Switch; they're a romantic couple role-playing.
  • On Cobra, the titular character gets into an argument with a gang member and he humiliates him by ripping off his shirt.
  • Compliance: A man calls up a fast food restaurant, convinces the manager that he's a police officer, and persuades her to strip-search a young female employee on the pretense of looking for stolen merchandise. The employee suffers through it because of threats that it will go much worse for her if she doesn't. It's all a thrill for the caller, who orchestrates increasingly degrading acts to be performed on the victim, culminating in her being raped. This is based on a true story.
  • Male example from Crime Story (and from Jackie Chan, no less); when Inspector Eddie Hung gets arrested by the Taiwanese police halfway through the film, he's subjected to this while being interrogated.
  • The Dark Crystal: After the Chamberlain loses the Trial by Stone, the other Skeksis tear all his elaborate robes and the like off while he squawks in terror and exile him.
  • Is what happens to a female scientist in Das Experiment (loosely based on real facts) after an experiment about prison environment Goes Horribly Wrong.
  • In action flick Death Warrant an undercover female lawyer investigating organ traffic in a prison is forced to strip naked in front of the corrupt prison guards.
  • In the film Detroit based on the 1967 Detroit riot, a group of young people are essentially held hostage by the cops until they admit who was taking potshots at the police. When they drag one of the young women off to interrogate her, they proceed to call her a whore (particularly disgusted because she and her friend are two white girls hanging out with black guys) and tear her clothes off until she's completely naked, then laugh at her humiliation.
  • A Dutch film called The Dress focuses on a dress that brings bad luck to anyone who wears it, and a train conductor who is obsessed with whatever woman currently has it on. When the dress and the conductor both reach a schoolgirl, he forces her to strip naked; the camera lingers on her embarrassment.
  • Dune (2021). After his capture, a paralyzed Duke Leto Atreides is stripped nude and seated at a table where his Arch-Enemy Baron Harkonnen is eating food from his own kitchen.
  • Elvira, Mistress of the Dark features Elvira ripping the top off her blonde rival Patty when Patty tries to come between Elvira and her love interest Bob. It gets even worse for Patty when the ripping stripping reveals to the entire public in broad daylight that Patty is actually flat chested and was stuffing her shirts the whole film to make herself look more buxom and shapely than she really was, leaving Patty completely humiliated (though she is kind of a bitch so you can't feel too bad for her).
  • Escape Room (2017): Christen is captured, stripped naked, and locked in a small cage where she is forced to crouch while he friends navigate the escape room. For further humiliation, images of her are broadcast to her friends inside the escape room.
  • Discussed in The Evil That Men Do (1984), which opens with a Torture Technician lecturing a roomful of army officers with the "help" of a male prisoner.
Dr. Molloch: You have seen, gentlemen, how a woman must be made to remove her own clothing, depriving her of her dignity. With a man, it is the opposite. STRIP HIM!
  • The Falcon and the Snowman: Andrew Daulton Lee is interrogated by the police lieutenant in his office while wearing only briefs, which are all he's wearing when Foreign Service diplomats come by to discuss his case.
  • Felon: Laura is made to take off her blouse, and then her bra, when something in it sets off the metal detectors.
  • Head On: After being arrested on a drug charge, Ari and his trans friend Tula are forced to strip in a police station by Corrupt Cops. When Tula hesitates taking off her underwear one of the cops rips it off her and administers a beating.
  • In Hot Spur, Carlo does this as part of his humiliation of Susan after he kidnaps her.
  • At the end of Iron Man 3, while being held captive by Aldrich Killian, Pepper Potts is barefoot and shirtless.
  • James Bond:
    • In Dr. No, it is implied that Dr. No's guards did this to Honey Rider off-screen, as when Bond rescues her at the end, she is barefoot and pantsless.
    • Diamonds Are Forever features something of a time-delayed reaction to this. It wasn't being stripped down to her panties that shamed the lovely Plenty O'Toole — in fact, she sounds rather pleased with herself after it happens —, it was Plenty being caught after it happened by some generic thugs that caused her to be humorously shamed.
    • A variation of this happens in The Living Daylights. After Bond has confronted Pushkin, an alarm is sounded, and Bond forces Puskin's girlfriend Kata to take her top off, but not because he has anything against her — he has her face the door so that when a bodyguard charges in, he's distracted by the now-topless girl, so he can ambush the guard. (Once he does that, he throws her a towel and tells her to lock herself in the bathroom so he and Pushkin can have words.) Later in the movie a prison guard orders Kara to strip (after saying he hasn't had a female prisoner in a long time) but Bond intervenes before he can force her to do so.
  • Joy Ride
    • In Joy Ride, Rusty blackmails Lewis and Fuller into walking across a parking lot and into a crowded diner completely nude to show them what humiliation feels like.
    • Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead has Rusty blackmailing Melissa into stripping down to her underwear while he records it...only for her to discover that the trucker she stripped for wasn't Rusty. Making matters worse, said trucker promptly uploads the video to the Internet..
  • In King of the Lost World, Dana and Natalie after getting captured by the natives of the island get stripped naked and forced to wear loincloths.
  • Killshot: When Blackbird and Richie invade the Colsons' home in the climax, Richie forces Carmen to strip down to her underwear and indicates that a sexual assault is next. This pisses off Blackbird so much that he kills his associate.
  • In Lost Highway, Alice is forced to strip in front of the baddies at gunpoint, though her facial expression mixes it with Defiant Strip.
  • Near the end of Malèna, the lead character is beaten and stripped by an angry mob after her infidelity becomes public.
  • The Mask of Zorro:
    • Elena is stripped, albeit humorously, by Zorro after their duel.
    • Played for Laughs as well when the Murrieta brothers tie a group of captured Mexican soldiers by the wrists and place them around a cactus, facing it and stripped from the waist down. If any of the soldiers tries to get away from the cactus, the one on the other side will get the... touch of the cactus in his privates.
  • In the movie Shuttle (2008), the Driver forces both Jules and Mel to strip down to their bra and panties before making them put on high heels for an inspection.
  • Julie London's character in Man of the West is forced at gunpoint by the villains to undress. It's a decidedly uncomfortable scene, though (being a '50s Western) she's interrupted by Gary Cooper before she gets too far along.
  • Memoirs of a Geisha: When the Baron presents a kimono to Sayuri in private at the party, he undresses her against her will in order to "take a look", but does not go any further.
  • Mismatched Couples is a largely unknown 1985 kung-fu film known among its small viewership mostly for 3 things. Starring a 22-year-old Donnie Yen in only his second movie, his sweet breakdancing skills, and a scene where Yen's character tracks down a female Mook who assaulted his friend, mocking her physique and sets out to prove that "men are better than women" by outperforming her in the gym (which he does), as a final Gut Punch, the aforementioned friend states that "men are braver" and then strips down to his pants and says that if she's so brave, then she should take all of her clothes off (worth noting that this is in a crowded gym and she's wearing little more than a Leotard of Power). She's clearly humiliated but angrily goes along with it and begins to pull off her leotard before Yen's character's sister stops her, and she runs off.
  • In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the heroine Elizabeth Swann is forced to strip off her dress while walking the plank, much to the amusement of the pirates. At least she still had her slip on underneath. The pirate captain Barbossa demands it because he loaned her the dress and wants it back, but it's clear it's really just to humiliate her.
    • Earlier she agrees to an "invitation" to a dinner with Barbossa (while wearing said dress) under the threat of otherwise having to dine with the crew, naked.
  • In The Ribald Tales of Robin Hood, Robin has the Sheriff and Lady Sallyforth stripped, tied back to back, and sent back to Nottingham on the back of a horse. Lady Sallyforth later returns the favour by cutting Marian's clothes off while Marian is a prisoner in her dungeon.
  • In Ryan's Daughter: Rosie is stripped by the villagers after she is accused of having an affair with a British Soldier.
  • In The Scavengers, Captain Harris' men slowly remove Faith's clothing in front of her fiancee preparatory to raping her.
  • In the film Slashers, where the main characters enter a Japanese blood sport game show where the contestants can win millions of dollars if they survive being hunted through various arenas by costumed killers, the lead character Megan Lowry gets stripped by one of the killers at the start of the game, leaving her naked until one of other female contestants hands over her clothes for Megan, only for Megan to get stripped off yet again, forcing her to salvage the clothes of one of the already dead female contestants.
  • The Belgian film Stormforce has it played two ways within about five minutes in the prologue, where a group of special forces operators are performing an anti-terrorism exercise during a government party. Alex (the female lead) spots one all-male team and gets them caught, and tells the guys holding them to strip-search them so she can watch "some cute butts". About a minute later, Rick (the male lead) gets the drop on Alex and strips her to her underwear before leaving her tied to a tree; she's clearly scared out of her wits.
  • There is a TV movie called Strip Search which was of course, Exactly What It Says on the Tin. During one sequence, an interrogator played by Ken Leung of Lost fame is interrogating a stripped Maggie Gyllenhaal. Just to add insult to injury, he performs a cavity search on her, very clearly out of a desire to terrify and humiliate her more than any belief he's going to find anything. Not surprisingly, as soon as he leaves the room, she bursts into tears and smashes every piece of furniture in the room.
  • In Suffragette the protagonists are forced to strip and change into prison clothes. In protest against this treatment and the general fact that they are not treated like political prisoners, they go on a hunger strike.
  • Swashbuckler: In a rare male-to-male example, Major Folly is disconcerted when Lord Durant tells him to do this: especially as he tells him to do it item by item, and does not dismiss the other people in the room first. However, Durant actually wants him stripped to the waist so the lute player can rake him down the chest with his Wolverine Claws as a warning as to what might happen to Folly should he fail him again.
  • True Lies: Finding that his wife Helen has been cheating on him while he's been traveling around the world on missions for the CIA, Harry Tasker punishes her by having her kidnapped, locked in a dark, mirrored room where he and his partner harshly interrogate her (their voices grotesquely altered by a vocoder device) from an unseen location and then forced to take part in a "spy mission" that ends with her stripping down to (very skimpy) underwear for the amusement of an unidentified man sitting in the shadows — who, of course, turns out to be Harry himself. He intended it to be a fulfillment of a fantasy of hers but Didn't Think This Through, and gets brained by her with a telephone for his troubles when he tries to, ahem, take it further. More than any other scene in the movie, that's the one that elicited an enraged, Dude, Not Funny! reaction from lotsa people (and not only feminists).
  • Uncut Gems: Howard Ratner owes a Loan Shark named Arno money. When he can't pay up, Arno has his thugs beat Howard up, steal all his clothes, then lock him in the trunk of his own car.
  • Under the Rainbow: Otto cuts Annie's dress off with a sword, leaving her in her underwear.
  • The Wicker Man (1973): The villagers do this to Sergeant Howie before he is sacrificed.
