Sandbox / Fountain Of Wick Checks

Go To

Fountain of Memes is supposed to refer to characters that are popular enough to spawn memes that are based on them, but according to the "F" folder from one of the Square Peg, Round Trope subpages, it's often used for works and/or moments that have undergone this phenomenon. This wick check will examine 55 wicks, and determine this audience reaction's fate.

14/55

So yeah, for every correct entry, there are a few that lack context (which feel like they assume that the people who are reading them don't need to know why they're memetic) and/or are focused on a work/moment.

Correct (a character becomes a popular meme source)
  • Treasure Island (1988): The movie's version of Dr. Livesey became a major source of internet memes during The New '20s, thanks to his boisterous personality and fighting skills.
  • Super Mario World (1991): Luigi is the show's resident meme lord, due to his highly quotable lines mixed with Tony Rosado's hilariously hammy performance. Many have watched this cartoon just for him and he's often quoted as having played a major part in the creation of YouTube poops.
  • Real-Time Fandub:
    • Alfred's hamtastic performance as Eggman in the dub, where he gets all the best lines and has the funniest characterization. His stints in the Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic Riders dubs, while less quotable, are almost as memorable.
    • Chase's characters are generally considered the most memorable, managing to come up with gut-bustingly funny dialogue on the fly. Mephiles/Memphis Tennessee is the most famous of the lot for his absurd rants and hammy demeanor, but Storm, Mr. X, Mike/Markiplier, and Black Doom/The Devil are considered similar standouts. The first entry is technically about a person's performance of a certain character, but it seems to be about a character nonetheless.
  • Vs Sonic.exe: Lord X has constantly been used for memes, thanks to his icon and poses looking unintentionally hilarious. Round 2 seemed to outright embrace this, with his various poses (outside his up pose) being downright hilarious to look at.
  • Barbie: Princess Charm School: Portia is the most quoted character in the film, since she has a lot of memorable lines that demonstrate her odd, ditzy behavior.
  • Forced Meme: Inverted: Every word out of Spencer's mouth becomes a meme without effort. The pothole seems to be correct.

Works/moments become a popular meme source (akin to Memetic Mutation)

    Lacking in context
  • SpongeBob SquarePants (two examples):
    • Patrick is the best example here.
    • Squidward is also a huge source of memorable lines. Both entries seem valid in theory, but neither explain why these characters are examples.
  • Vinesauce: Pretty much anything out of Joel's mouth is guaranteed to catch on. How so?
  • Zoolander: Let's just say this movie is "very quotable" and leave it at that.
    • "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!"
    • "What is this? A center for ANTS?!"
    • "I guess you can dere-LICT my balls, cap-i-tan!"
    • "Cool story, Hansel!"
    • "Orange mocha Frappucino!"
    • "You think I don't know what a eugoogoly is?"
    • "Hansel. He's so hot right now!"
      • "Hansel. So hot right now. Hansel."
    • "Mer-MAN!"
    • " But why male models?"
    • " Listen to your friend Billy Zane. He's a cool dude!"
      • "Put a cork in it, Zane!"
    • "They're [the files] in the computer?!'' Just a list of supposedly memetic quotes from the movie. No true explanation as to why these are memorable, and no characters are mentioned.
