YMMV / Real-Time Fandub

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The Sonic dubs are quoted so often that most people know of SnapCube's Real-Time Fandub before they hear about the original series by Charley Marlowe.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Maria Robotnik claims she locked Shadow in a capsule and sent him down to Earth because of how rancid his fart was. Was Shadow's fart that bad, or was Shadow correct in his accusation that Maria was the one who actually farted? Or perhaps there was no fart at all and Maria only used it as an excuse because she was so heartbroken over Shadow's desire to commit sin.
    • The last story of the Sonic Adventure 2 dub has Gerald Robotnik try to wipe out all life on Earth after his son's nudes got leaked online. Was this a (vastly overblown) Papa Wolf moment? Or was Eggman's dick pic was so disgusting/horrifying that Gerald felt the need to put every person who saw it out of their misery?
    • While Sonic's quote, "I can never die!" is technically true, was it also said as a way to reassure Elise in her safety but in his own, egomaniacal manner?
    • In the Sonic Adventure 2 dub Sonic sleeps with Eggman's wife Martha, yet in the Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) dub Sonic marries Shadow and rejects Elise after his resurrection proclaiming himself gay. So did Sonic sleep with Martha solely to piss off Eggman? Or is Sonic actually bisexual and only pretended to be homosexual to let Elise down gently?
    • Was The Devil's questions about whether Maria was alive and she and Shadow hung out all the time because he saved her a case of Innocently Insensitive, or was he deliberately mocking and toying with him?
    • Did the Devil actually have Psychic Powers and just forget about them until he caused Shadow to collapse, or did Shadow's collapsing have nothing to do with him and he was just trying to save face by pretending he was responsible? The hasty utterance of "PSYCHIC ATTACK!" suggests the latter.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Shadow and Rouge end up in the future, only to find out that Fortnite has been destroyed and all of Rouge's save files are gone. Immediately after finding that out, she and Shadow go on to build their own battle royale.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The parody songs used as the openings or endings of the dubs. Special mention to the Die Young/My Destiny mashup used as the ending of the Sonic 06 dub for combining two very different songs, and even incorporating Pumpkin Hill into the full version.
    • The Dramatic Pumpkin Hill theme that plays when Shadow and Rouge start to plan out their battle royale for the first time.
    • The opening credits for Sonic 06 use a version of the game's own theme, "His World", with the lyrics changed into an ode to improv itself.
In this dub, no lines to throw
In this dub, never stop or slow!
When you quip without a script you'll find
It's not funny all the time
But if we never try, we'll never know!
    • For the opening credits of the RE2 Remake Fandub, they make use of a remix and mashup between X Gonna Give it to Ya and Aqua Ring.
    • In the Sonic Riders dub's climax when Babylon Garden turns into a black hole, we're treated to a dramatic rendition of Alfred's "There Goes Hawaii" tune from the Sonic Adventure 2 fandub.
    • The original song ''Rude Mountain'', written by Penny for the Until Dawn dub's credits.
    • The cover of "I Am... All of Me" for the dub for Shadow the Hedgehog is just as epic as the original, with some impressive singing from Penny.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • Half of what Eggman says after Sonic is killed by Memphis. He suddenly says "cock" after a laugh and claims he has been craving for some good gamer dick since 1907. He then presses the glass of his eye and says he's Sans, which naturally confuses everyone and brings back Sonic from the dead just to ask "Since when?".
    • Robert Kendo's scene becomes this in the Resident Evil 2 dub. Instead of a tearjerking reminder of the humanity at the heart of Raccoon City's tragedy, it just becomes an odd, rambling encounter with a father-daughter Etsy store owner. Lampshaded by Leon:
Leon: [sarcastically] Well, that sounded really important to the overall story. What do you think, Ada? Do you think that was important, huh?! [...] Anyway, like I was saying, I don't know why we're here, there doesn't seem to be anything important happening. No zombies, no action...
    • In the middle of the Back to the Future dub, the visual switched to a clip from Taxi where Danny DeVito teaches Christopher Lloyd how to play Pac-Man. Much confusion followed.
  • Bizarro Episode: Although the series can go plenty weird, the dub of Subspace Emissary goes all out. Uploaded on April Fool's day, the Stylistic Suck dub is mostly comprised of half the characters talking over each other to see who's the loudest, the other half speaking in monotone whispers directly into their microphones, and vaguely trying to connect themes of sexuality, Pizza Tower, and WARIO.note
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
  • Epileptic Trees: Someone on Tumblr made a very detailed theory about Jet the Hawk being a powerful Reality Warper, with it even theorizing that it was him who created The World Of Thematic Resolution so that Sonic could become a better person.
  • Fountain of Memes:
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Eggman didn't get as angry at Shadow cucking him as he did at Shadow peeing on his wife. At first this comes off as Insane Troll Logic at work, but hedgehogs, like many other mammals, will use their feces and urine to mark objects as theirs. Shadow wasn't just screwing Eggman's wife, he was actively trying to claim her as his own - and that's why Eggman was so pissed off about it.
    • The "Groundhog Day" Loop introduced in the Shadow the Hedgehog dub makes a lot of sense when you remember that most playthroughs of the game involve watching the same opening cutscene and playing Westopolis at the start before the game's levels branch out depending on your decisions. And you're required to do this 10 times for each final boss before unlocking Last Story.
    • Black Doom having time powers makes sense. Aside from the possible idea that the entire game is him forcing Shadow through a "Groundhog Day" Loop to better manipulate him by breaking him down, he can use Chaos Control as Devil Doom. If anything, this change actually makes more sense because Sonic and his friends have no counter to Chaos Control or any time related powers.
    • Shadow's repetitive failures to gather sin points are more logical if he was Good All Along. In the beginning of the dub Shadows shows no interest in sinning for Devil's sake and says he'll lie; He's motivated in usurping the President and King of Hell even in the flashbacks, both of whom are evil, and killing Sonic counted as a good thing as well; The first thing he does as the President is giving furries legal rights; In the end Gerald reveals that Shadow was made to kill the Devil the entire time and never was on his side.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The climax of the Sonic Riders dub involving Tails demanding that Sonic admits to being a shitty person and apologizing to both him and Knuckles with everyone coming together as friends to take down a Strider becomes a bit more unfortunately ironic after Blue and Hayley (Tails, Rouge, Knuckles and Amy's VAs) got outed as being manipulative abusers themselves and were subsequently removed from the Clownhouse streaming group (which contains everyone else involved in Real-Time Fandub Games), making it the last dub that they will be involved with. An earlier moment in the dub also evokes this, where Tails asks Sonic if he would ever replace him and Knuckles as Sonic's friends and Sonic replies "Not unless you did something lame, or stupid, or uncool." The dub's official name being "Real-Time Fandub Games and the Necessity of Change" makes it even worse in hindsight.
    • The entire "force-femme" gag from the RE2 dub note  is a lot harder to watch in hindsight since Leon's VA Ryan came forward and made it clear that he was uncomfortable with the bit.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Alfred for being able to completely improvise Eggman's infamous "pissing on the moon" speech without breaking character, even as the rest of the cast is left in stitches. The behind-the-scenes video reveals that, once everyone had finally recovered, they immediately locked in everything from Eggman logging onto his Twitter account up to the end of the rant, because it was just too good to risk losing.
      • Alfred once again manages to impress with his genuinely creepy performance as Chief Irons. A lot of the comments for the Resident Evil 2 dub remarked that he actually managed to freak them out despite the dub being a comedy first and foremost.
    • In the dub for Spider-Man (PS4), Penny proves her worth as an actor with her performance as the titular hero. While a lot of it can be attributed to her attempts to salvage the story of the game while working off of her castmates, she really sells the most dramatic moments of the story. It helps that the Spider-Man's inherently quippy nature means she can say whatever she wants without having to worry about breaking character.
    • Scout received a lot of love for her work as Mephiles/Memphis Tennessee where she managed to barely ever break character whilst delivering one of the absolutely hilarious portrayals in the series.
    • In Until Dawn, Holly arguably has one of the harder roles as Dr. Hill, since her scenes are almost entirely solo with no other characters to play off of. Still, she manages to be consistently funny, and even rather chilling in a few scenes, as well as being able to successfully connect the shenanigans the group get up to and the sheer randomness of the dub into a consistent narrative.
    • In the trailer for the Shadow the Hedgehog dub, Ryan as Shadow received much praise for his genuinely emotional shout of "MARIA!". Some even went so far as to say his version of the line is better than the actual one.
    • While SnapCube's livestreams of The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog aren't technically part of the Real-Time Fandub lineup, the fact that the cast isn't doing a complete Gag Dub for once and actually dubbing the lines highlights how capable they are as voice actors. Penny does a phenomenal job as Sonic and the Protagonist, for instance, as does Red as Tails. And Alfred reprises his Eggman voice even when he's playing the character straight, still makes it work, and he still steals the scenes he's in!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • One of the recurring gags of the Sonic 06 dub is Fortnite's Tilted Towers area (the only place in the game that the dubbers could remember the name of) and it being the ruined, lava-filled Crisis City. A few weeks after the dub premiered, an in-game event in Season 9 featured Tilted Towers getting destroyed by a volcano.
    • Alfred's often overlooked Hero story version of the Detonation Moon rant in the Sonic Adventure 2 dub got a bit of a resurgence in January 2021 due to how this line from the beginning sounds hilariously similar to how some stock trade apps reacted in light of GameStop's massive stock surge in the US:
Eggman: Hey everyone! Guess what? I know you wanna buy my stocks, but fuck you, I am keeping the stocks!
    • Penny insists that the joke in the Sonic 06 dub referencing Activision Blizzard is this rather than the opposite by virtue of being a sarcastic Take That! to the company.
Shadow: I'm gonna chill out here and make sure that [my game] gets picked up by some big successful game development company that's gonna be around for a long time, like Blizzard.
    • In the fandub of Shadow the Hedgehog, Devil Doom, a.k.a Satan's Dog, bellows out "Mr. Yuji Naka is fucking wrong!" prior to fighting Shadow. At the time this was simply meant to be an Ironic Echo of some Enemy Chatter from the game, but a few months after the dub was released, Yuji Naka was arrested for insider trading, causing many fans to express the same sentiment.
    • A plot point in the Shadow the Hedgehog dub is Shadow running and then successfully becoming president. Soon enough, SEGA announced the release date of Sonic Frontiers: November 8, 2022, the same day as the North American midterm elections.
      • Also from Sonic Frontiers, the End takes the form of a giant moon that is able to consume and destroy planets with its Kill Sat laser. Plenty of jokes have been made about how the moon is getting revenge for being pissed on by Eggman.
      • Also from Sonic Frontiers, in the Hero Story version of the Signature Scene of the Sonic Adventure 2 fandub, Eggman says "I hope you're ready to die, it's gonna be like Evangelion, get the fuck out". Between the Titans resembling the Evas and the Angels, The End resembling Lilith's Black Moon and Sage being a Rei Ayanami Expy, one would say Eggman was 4 years too early to claim that something Evangelion-like would happen in the Sonic universe (the dub was made in 2018).
      • Speaking of Sage, the "I miss my wife, Tails. I miss her a lot." line could be changed to "I miss my daughter, Sonic. I miss her a lot."
    • In the Shadow dub, Eggman off-handedly notes that he made an army of Shadow Androids to help him take over Apple. In 2023, SEGA HARDlight announced Sonic Dream Team, a game exclusive to Apple Arcade, followed by several more Apple-exclusive Sonic spin-offs in 2024. Seems like Sonic really is taking over Apple.
    • The Resident Evil 2 dub opens with a quote from John Milton's Paradise Lost: "The mind is its own place and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." This exact quote would appear in the beginning of Persona 5 Tactica, which Penny noticed while streaming the game.
  • Hype Backlash: Snapcube's Real-Time Fandub has received a lot of flak from some on the internet as a result of its popularity, in particular the infamous "Eggman pisses on the moon" monologue, believing that it relies too much on Non Sequitur and unfavourably comparing its impact on fan perceptions of the cast to that of Dragon Ball Z Abridged.
  • Informed Wrongness: In the Sonic Riders dub, Sonic is called out for his Jerkass behavior and treating his friends like crap—and to be fair, he is a prick. The thing is, so is everyone else; they all frequently insult and belittle each other. In fact, Sonic is the only one who feels remorse over his actions.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Memphis Tennessee, despite being nicer than the actual Mephiles, is a misogynistic incel who regularly puts down Silver. That said, he's constantly mistreated and rejected by Shadow, his attempts at making a battle royale are never taken seriously, and he ends up getting trapped in a vape dildo by Shadow for ten years. To top it off, while he kills Sonic, it was by complete accident; leading him to have a mental breakdown and kickoff his descent into honest villainy.
    • While it's hard to feel 100% bad for the Devil in the Shadow the Hedgehog dub given that he's... y'know, Satan and constantly intrudes upon Shadow's personal boundaries, he still goes through the story being disrespected and demeaned by Shadow, who he'd believed was created to be his best friend, only to find out that he was being pranked the entire time. Near the end of the dub, he experiences a full Villainous Breakdown from dealing with Shadow's antics before being beaten up from the inside out and having his dog killed purely to cause him emotional damage.
  • LGBT Fanbase: No doubt due to the heavy theming of sexuality and gender in dubs like the Sonic 06 and Resident Evil 2 dubs. Not to mention the pre-existing LGBT Fanbase of the Snapcube channel and that pretty much the entire cast is LGBT themselves.
  • Love to Hate:
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • From their Gravity Falls dubs:
    • Pretty much anything from SnapCube's Real-Time Fandub of Sonic Adventure 2 (both Hero and Dark/Last Story). Especially Alfred Coleman's performance as Eggman.

    • Much like with Adventure 2, SnapCube's real-time fandub of Sonic '06 has spawned many:
      • Anything that comes out of Mephiles - or rather, Memphis Tennessee's mouth, really. Alfred Coleman as Dr. Eggman isn't far behind as per usual.
      • "Ha ha! Ha! O N E!"
      • "Count how many sand is here, Omega." Explanation

    • "I am going to kill the next person I fucking see, I swear to God!" "Hello, hi, I'm so happy to see you!" Explanation
    • For whatever reason, making edits of "It's really cute that you're gonna defeat me with the power of friendship and all, but again, I am the Devil, from the Bible, so..." took off on TikTok after the Shadow the Hedgehog dub was released.
    • "Subspace Dubbed Over" brings us "WARIO!!!! I GOTTA WIN!" Explanation
  • Misaimed Fandom: Penny has stated the entire point of RTF is to go in unprepared and just improvise jokes over the media they cover, rather than solely rely on old jokes, and on top of this Alfred has made it pretty clear that he won't be making another pissing on ____ joke. That doesn't seem to stop some fans from begging the group to dub various Sonic games just to see Eggman piss on various things. While he can't resist pissing on the Black Comet at the end of the Shadow the Hedgehog dub, to cheers from the other cast members, it's immediately followed by Knuckles harassing Eggman to reference the scene again, and Eggman insisting he will never do so, as well as Alfred half-assing the joke earlier by just shouting, "Hey, reference!".
  • More Popular Spin-Off: The Real-Time Fandub Games subseries has eclipsed the original animation-focused concept in popularity, thanks to the existing popularity of the SnapCube channel (which the series is hosted on) and the Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 06 dubs both becoming a Fountain of Memes.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Somewhat appropriate considering the game in question, a lot of viewers were genuinely disturbed by Alfred's performance as Chief Irons, particularly during the sequence where he's chasing after Sherry in the orphanage.
    • Due to the dub eventually devolving into a meta-narrative about the process of creating the dubs themselves, the Until Dawn dub eventually spirals into Existential Horror as the characters begin to recognize the fact that they don't really exist, when they're not still being funny that is.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Though the original character has earned fans in his later appearances, Silver was highly disliked in his debut game Sonic 06. The game's dub saw him become one of the most popular characters in this series for being an outrageously over the top woobie, who's flamboyantly dorkish nature makes him both hilarious and incredibly sympathetic.
    • Princess Elise is a contender for the most hated character in the original Sonic series, but her portrayal here was well liked due to her playing a strong Straight Man to everyone's else's insanity. And like Silver, those who hate the original character will enjoy seeing her frequently insulted by the rest of the cast.
    • The Duke of Soleanna is another character from Sonic 06 who had very few fans and his share of haters, but was considered a highlight in the dub for being one of the most utterly ridiculous characters, even by this series' impressive standards.
    • Black Doom is often derided as one of the weakest villains in the Sonic series, but is widely considered to be the highlight of the Shadow the Hedgehog Real Time Fandub; going from a generic and edgy Flat Character, to an Affably Evil loser devil brought to life by a hilarious performance from Scout.
  • Signature Scene:
    • For the Sonic Adventure 2 dub, no moment is more remembered than Eggman's big "announcement" and subsequent urination on the moon in the Dark Story.
    • The Sonic Riders dub gives us the GMod sequence where Storm begs a gun toting Hatsune Miku to kill him.
    • For Sonic 06 we have the gamer pad scene. Not only is it a hilarious Take That! to gamerbro culture, but Scout manages to deliver the rant without breaking character or corpsing until the very end.
    • From the Shadow the Hedgehog dub, we have Satan's Villainous Breakdown as he snaps at Shadow for rejecting his offers of friendship.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Subspace Dubbed Over is intentionally designed to be a bad fandub, and yet for a number of fans, the lowbrow, low-effort comedy loops around to being hilarious because the people involved are phoning it in as hard as possible.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: GUN Commander Tower gets fired by The President due to his incompetence & late arrival rescue of The President. The Commander of GUN also holds a grudge against Shadow because he legalizes Furries and ascended them from 2nd class citizens.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Despite everyone involved going full Ham and Cheese on Subspace Dubbed Over, two of the actors take it a bit more seriously:
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Silver spends most of the Sonic 06 dub being treated like a Butt-Monkey, hardly getting the respect from other characters, and is pretty much The Friend Nobody Likes within that dub. However, he is actually considered to be a highlight of the dub due to his VA exaggerating his normal in-canon whinging.
  • The Woobie:
    • Eggman, of all characters, has a pretty miserable state of existence in the Sonic Adventure 2 dub. After being separated from his wife, Martha, for three years, he saves Shadow from cryostasis, only to be rewarded by discovering his wife's repeated infidelities. He subsequently has his main Twitter account deleted, is beaten into submission by Tails, and has his nudes leaked online, revealing that he has an abnormally-shaped and undersized penis. Having enough of everything, he has a mental breakdown ranting at the entire cast and states that he's divorced Martha, wanting nothing to do with her. By the end of the dub, he's an alcoholic shell of a man barely gripping to sanity... Although he does get better by the Sonic 06 dub.
    • Silver in the Sonic 06 dub. He's constantly put down by the other characters and suffers from a crippling lack of self-worth.
    • Markiplier/Mike in the Until Dawn dub goes through a full existential crisis during the second half of the dub until he breaks both mentally and emotionally. He starts part 2 being deeply terrified and scared of what's going on, which continues to escalate until he realizes that he's just a videogame character being dubbed in a parody and snaps. By the climax of the dub, he's delved headfirst into somber acceptance of having no control over anything.
