Recap / Totally Spies S 1 E 18 Passion Patties

Go To

The girls investigate a wave of chaos instigated by a highly addictive cookie that turns whoever eats it severely fat, and Clover ends up the treat’s latest victim.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: The first seen victim of Passion Patties sees her diet ruined when she gets addicted and obese, but thankfully she presumably gets the cure offscreen.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Discussed In-Universe. Nobody who falls victim to the cookies expresses any concern about their weight gain until after they get off the cookies, which is intentional, since Bittersweet designed the cookies to be so addictive the consumer wouldn't care about anything else but eating them. Clover doesn't even notice how big she's gotten until the end of the episode when she puts her size to use in combat; and the first woman the spies notice addicted to the cookies shrugs it off as if she put on a dozen pounds at most.
  • Balloon Belly: Clover starts off with a pot belly when she first gains weight from Passion Patties before becoming sumo-sized later in the episode.
  • Big Beautiful Man: Jerry manages to double in size but is able to carry his bulk rather well for a man of his age.
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Despite fattening up, Clover still looks no less beautiful than she did when she was skinny.
  • Big Eater: Clover, Jerry and any non-villainous character qualify as their addiction causes them to eat endless amounts of cookies (as opposed to the Villainous Glutton’s working for Bittersweet).
  • Bound and Gagged: The spies are tied up and force fed cookies. While Sam and Alex dislike their predicament, Clover loves it.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Her "highly concentrated sugar extract" notwithstanding, Dr. Bittersweet apparently had enough money and resources to take over the Happy Girls on a level that allowed her to oversee cookie production and fill the workforce with Passion Patty addicts happy to do her bidding in exchange for more cookies, with no explanation where she got the kind of funding needed to put her plans into motion.
Jerry: If only she used her baking skills for good instead of evil.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: As per the norm for this series, Dr. Bittersweet is taking out her frustration on being kicked out of the Happy Girls as a kid by causing widespread chaos and a massive obesity surge with her Passion Patties formula.
  • Fat Comic Relief:
    • Clover. Between being unable to buckle her seat belt, being used as a human bowling ball, getting stuck in a door frame, and her appetite keeping her distracted, Clover's weight makes her the butt of a joke more often than not.
    • Downplayed in Jerry's case, with the humor relating to how shocking it is that he managed to get so fat offscreen.
  • Fat and Proud: The Passion Patty addicts are shown to be aware of how much weight they've gained, but don't care as they're too focused on getting more cookies. The first woman the spies meet shrugs it off as having put on "a little weight" but even says it's worth it to keep eating her cookies. Clover and Jerry are both huge, they aren't too miserable either. That said, they hope the antidote for the sugar extract will get rid of the extra weight so they can properly do their jobs.
  • Fat Bastard: Bittersweet's henchmen are all overweight and rather nasty.
  • The Fat Episode: One of the primary focuses of the episode is lots of people getting fat from eating Passion Patties, Clover and Jerry included.
  • Force Feeding: Dr.Bittersweet's Death by Cookie does this to the spies. While Sam and Alex spit out the cookies due to their dislike of them (since they were mint flavored), Clover loves it. The spies do this to Bittersweet at the end of the episode by force feeding her extract, causing her to fatten up instantly and crave her cookies.
  • Formerly Fat: It is strongly implied by Bittersweet’s backstory that she was a fat kid who overindulged in the cookies she was supposed to be selling, but became thin as an adult and now knows better than to go near them.
  • Formerly Fit: The affects of consuming Passion Patties including putting on a huge amount of weight in a quick period. When the girls are sent to talk to Shirley Rogers, they're shocked when comparing Shirley's photo to her new obese size. Clover herself quickly grows huge, and the normally stick-thin Jerry practically doubles in width.
  • Girl Scouts Are Evil: Played with. The Happy Girl organization has essentially been taken over by Dr. Bittersweet, but the Happy Girls themselves have no clue that they're being used to deliver the addictive Passion Patties and just think they're selling cookies that are really, really good.
  • G-Rated Drug: Passion Patties can get you addicted with just one bite, and the spies were sent to investigate due to the rioting going on when people can't get enough. The workers in the cookie distribution centers all seem to be so addicted that Bittersweet keeps them in line by regularly feeding them Passion Patties as they pack boxes.
  • I Can't Believe It's Not Heroin!: Passion Patties are shown to be so addictive and cause such health problems that's it painfully obvious they're a metaphor for substance abuse. Dr. Bittersweet comes across as a drug manufacturer who is well aware of how harmful the stuff is and never uses her own product.
  • Idiot Ball: Jerry knows right off something is wrong with Passion Patties, and still ends up sampling one and getting just as fat as Clover.
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: Passion Patties are made with a "highly concentrated sugar extract" which causes untold euphoria upon the first bite and makes people crave more.
  • Insane Troll Logic: In her vanity, Clover believes that wearing a large sized hat is some sort of indictment of her waistline and diet. The end of the episode has Clover change her opinion.
  • Instant Taste Addiction: A single bite of Passion Patties is enough to make someone immediately hooked. Sam and Alex avoid this by spitting out the cookies without chewing or tasting them (considering that they were mint flavored, it made them even more likely to spit it out).
  • Lean and Mean: Inga Bittersweet is stick thin compared to her Fat Bastard henchmen.
  • Not So Above It All: Jerry proves as susceptible to Passion Patties as Clover does, and orders the spies to send him as many boxes of the cookies as they can "for research purposes."
  • Nutritional Nightmare: The sugar extract used to make Passion Patties causes people to gain large amounts of weight in a short period. Just drinking a vial of the stuff raw is enough to make a person balloon in size, Alex herself almost ends up becoming another fat victim this way when she notices the vial dripping from a machine during Sam's and her's investigation of the factory (which leads them getting caught by Bittersweet) and was about 5 seconds away from blowing up like a balloon due to her distraction from being thirsty which Sam pulls her away in time.
  • Space Whale Aesop: Clover has been trying to buy a medium popular hat during the episode, but Mandy buys the last one before the girls' mission. Her time being utterly bloated makes her realize that size doesn't really matter and she settles for a large size.
  • Stock "Yuck!": Alex and Sam are immediately grossed out by Passion Patties upon learning they're mint-flavored, with Alex describing minty things as tasting like toothpaste.
  • Stout Strength: Both Bittersweet's henchmen and Clover get physically stronger the fatter they get.
  • Sumo Wrestling: When the spies face off against Bittersweet and her henchpeople at the storage facility, Clover sumo wrestles Toad. Toad wins but Clover does trip her and pin her down. This provides a Rare Female Example of female sumo wrestling.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: With the exception of Bittersweet, everyone else who gains weight goes back to normal either by the end of the episode or the next one in Jerry's case.
  • Tempting Fate: Clover refuses to order a large sized hat because she thinks it’s meant for people who are overweight. She ends up obese due to getting hooked on the Passion Patties and as Sam and Alex lampshade, she’s now too large to wear any small sized clothing anymore.
  • Unishment: Dr. Bittersweet tries to torture the spies with a device that'll force feed them cookies until they explode ("Death by Cookie"). As Clover is fully into her addiction, she's having the time of her life. Luckily for Sam and Alex, they happened to be mint flavored cookies, a flavor they highly dislike.
  • Villainous Glutton: Played with regarding Dr. Bittersweet. As a kid she was kicked out of the Happy Girls for eating the cookies instead of selling them. As an adult, she never goes near the cookies until the spies force her to ingest her own addictive extract.
  • Weight Woe: Subverted. Most of the addicts don't care about their weight gain; they either don't notice or brush it off as a minor inconvenience. It's not until the end that the now obese Jerry and Clover state that hopefully the antidote for Bittersweet's sugar extract will slim them down to their previous sizes.
  • You Are Fat: As Clover gains weight, Alex and Sam make a few jokes at her expense.
