Recap / Titans S 2 E 3 Ghosts

Go To

The old Titans reluctantly return to Titans Tower to strategize against an old enemy. But the secrets of the Titans’ past threaten to tear apart this newly formed team from within.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Dr. Light can't help but to laugh at Slade's surprising Crossing the Line Twice kind of humor.
Slade: I'm glad we see eye-to-eye on this matter.
Dr. Light: Well, given that you only got one, we fuckin' better, right? [starts to laugh nervously] That was a joke, I was...
Slade: [as deadpan as possible] I see that.
Dr Light: Ok, I get what you did there. "I see that". Okay.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Jericho is apparently Slade's son's real name.
  • The Anticipator: The old Titans figure that Dr Light won't be expecting all of them to turn up. He is.
  • Bodyguard Crush: Faddei used to be one of the royal guards on Tamaran, and has a one night fling with Kory, but he is still in love with her years later. It's ambiguous whether Kory feels the same, but she's clearly fond of him.
  • Chekhov's Classroom: When Jason fights Doctor Light, he has flashbacks to Dick teaching him about fighting while at a disadvantage in "Rose".
  • Commonality Connection: Rachel and Rose bond over having villainous fathers.
  • Did Not Think This Through:
    • Jason going after Doctor Light alone, splitting up from his minimal backup with Beast Boy. While he manages to defeat Doctor Light solo, he's no match for Deathstroke who was there all along.
    • Gar agreeing to Jason's idea in the first place—he should have known Jason had no intention of just doing a "recon".
    • Jason's declaration about the Titans on live television turns out to have gained attention from their old enemies.
    • Dick cutting Jason out of the action because Dr Light is This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself. This after he'd already discussed with Bruce Wayne his own need to channel his rage into a physical target.
  • Diverting Power: Dr Light channels the power of the entire city through the stadium lights so he can absorb it. It also lights up his location like a neon sign, but he's expecting that.
  • Divide and Conquer: Slade's plan is to divide the Titans, see who is the weaker and take them down, one by one.
  • The Dreaded: Both Deathstroke and Dr. Light made the Titans shake in their pants now that they are both back.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Rose gets one from Dick, and jokes that she should be called "Patch" instead.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: In-Universe when Faddei realizes what's about to happen just before Kory locks him inside her spaceship.
  • Home Sweet Home: Inverted, Donna, Dawn and Hank are really not happy to be back at Titans Tower as it brings back bad memories for them.
  • Humans Are Special: Because of the freedoms that humans society offers, like getting to eat or wear whatever one wants, and especially the possibility of being with whoever we wants, Kory developed a soft spot for humanity, and is one of the reasons she doesn't wants to return on Tamaran.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: When Rachel calls Kory, she tells the later she got tired of keeping her evil side in check all the time and just wants to be a normal person.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Jason angrily lashes out at Rachel after she seems to lose control but he is right that she needs to get her powers under control given she was on the verge of telekinetically skewering him with several nearby swords, just over losing her temper.
  • King Incognito: This episode reveals Kory is next-to-be-queen, but she spent the whole time being dressed as a Earthing "commoner".
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Jason and Gar do this. Lampshaded by Gar, who asks Jason if he's never seen a horror movie.
  • Little "No": Before attacking Dick, Jason looks at both Rachel and Gar who disapprove what he is about to do by shaking their head as "Don't do this."
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Jason realizes the OG Titans are planning something, and he hates being kept aside.
Jason to Dick: Look, I don't like being left out of whatever plans you relics are cooking up out there, all right?
  • Lured into a Trap: Jason and Gar track down Doctor Light. Jason proceeds to run right into Deathstroke.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: We don't know what Deathstroke did to Jason after meeting him, just his screaming and Gar finding a Trail of Blood.
  • Not Your Problem: When the OG Titans find of Rose being in the tower under Dick's care, they straight up tell him she shouldn't be their problem because they don't want a "round two" with Slade.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • "Fuck me!"- this was Hank's reaction to Slade being back on the game.
    • The look on Jason's face when he realizes that he's just run into Deathstroke.
  • Rebel Prince: Kory is hunted down for not wanting to return home and rebelling against the Throne of Tamaran.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Rachel almost killed Jason, her eyes started to glow red, while her sclera became black, a sign that she is still influenced by her evil father.
  • Revenge: Dr Light is out of prison and ready for revenge against the Titans for putting him there.
  • Retired Badass: According to Interpol, Slade retired after the death of his son, Jericho.
  • Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale: When Kory is being served, Faddei mentions that he traveled twenty million miles. Twenty million miles from Earth is still within the solar system. The Vega system (where Tamaran is in the comics) is twenty-five light years, or about 150 trillion miles, away.
  • Shout-Out: Faddei is a big fan of Daffy Duck.
  • Single-Stroke Battle: When Jason takes a swing at Dick, the latter takes him down effortlessly.
  • Sole Survivor: Slade is the only survivor of a militaristic program made on 35 subjects meant to create super-soldiers who went on experimental bio-enhancements.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Dr Light escapes in a blinding flash of light while the Titans are distracted by a Bus Full of Innocents.
  • Superior Successor: When Donna confronts Dick about making Jason, Gar, Rachel and Rose Titans, he says he wants to train them to become a better version of the OG Titans, so they never make the same mistakes.
  • Take a Third Option: Kory can return with Faddei, or he can return alone and be executed for failing. She elects to lock him in her spaceship while she sorts out her problems on Earth.
  • Tell Me How You Fight: During the sparring between Dick and Rose, they discuss fighting, and they have quite different views. Rose chose the deadly, quick katana; her fighting style is elegant, full of dancing movements, giving a deadly blow at every turn. Dick instead has just a wooden staff, and his style is less about the killing blow and more about defense and knowing when to spare a life. Rose breaks his wooden staff at the end, but he still defeats her.
