Recap / The Ultimate Evil, "The Black Tiger"

Go To

After Jackie brings Uncle the Dog Talisman on the latter's birthday, Valerie accompanies the Chans to Bavaria in search of the Pig Talisman while Valmont hires Hak Foo to search for it with Tohru. A retelling of "The Dog and Piggy Show".

  • Anime Hair: Valerie lampshades that Hak Foo's mane of a hair looks like something out of Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • Antagonist Title: Hak Foo's nickname (which is his name translated from Chinese to English) serves as this chapter's title.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The chapter ends with Tohru managing to bring Shendu the Dog Talisman, which leaves the demon with three Talismans, and the Dark Hand gets a short breather from Shendu's wrath.
  • Balls of Steel: Downplayed; Valerie's Groin Attack makes Hak Foo double over with his face going blue, and she believes he's down for the count. However, he recovers almost instantly and resumes his attacks on her and Jackie.
  • Berserker Tears: Valerie's tears briefly turn into these when she tries to attack Hak Foo for seemingly killing Uncle.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Jackie has this reaction when Valerie reveals she figured out the Pig Talisman's location before Jade and Uncle did.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Valerie quickly becomes annoyed by Hak Foo's canon tendency to name his moves. She herself attacks him with two named moves of her own to mock him.
Valerie: MOTHER OF ALL BUTT-WHOPS FINDS BULLY'S FACE! [punches his face] HORSE KICKS FOR THE CROWN JEWELS! [kicks his crotch]
  • Continuity Nod: Valerie broke Uncle's teapot to spray the Enforcers with hot water in the previous chapter, so she gives him a new one as a birthday gift.
  • Cry into Chest: Valerie sobs in Jackie's shoulder when she thinks Uncle just got killed by Hak Foo.
  • Groin Attack: Valerie manages to give Hak Foo one and names the move as "horse kicks for the crown jewels".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Valerie's argument with her mother leads her to saying that she didn't need her mother before her father's death and still doesn't. Though mortified with herself, Valerie is too prideful to apologize.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Valerie unwittingly enables Tohru to take the Dog Talisman from Uncle when she well-meaningly takes hold of the old man, preventing him from dodging the large man's attempt to grab it like in canon. Tohru is then able to escape and bring it to Shendu, who now has three Talismans in his possession. Jade attempts to downplay it by stating that between the Dog and the Pig, the Dark Hand getting the former instead of the latter is preferable.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: Tohru falls on top of Hak Foo from the clock tower like in canon, but when the heroes have made it safely out of the crumbling tower and find the badly injured Hak Foo, Tohru has already escaped with the Talisman.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Gal: When Valerie's packing for the trip to Bavaria, Shendu finds her having on the phone a heated argument with her mother who seems to think her daughter isn't taking her studies seriously enough, and she utterly refuses to return to Toronto. Since her mother chose to pursue her own career and left Valerie in her father's care, their attempts to reconnect following his death haven't been going well.
    Valerie: You're a success, you've made your point! But I don't want a lawyer, I want a mother!
  • You Have Failed Me: Valmont contemplates on letting Tohru share his receptionist's fate if he needs to save his own skin in the face of Shendu's increasingly short fuse should Tohru fail to get a Talisman yet again. When Tohru returns alone from Bavaria, Shendu is indeed ready to incinerate him before Tohru reveals that he has the Dog Talisman.
