Recap / The Ultimate Evil, "The Lost Daughter"

Go To

When Jade breaks Lo Pei's terracotta statue, fixes it and brings it to life with the Rat Talisman, Valerie learns about the past of the ancient warrior who believes her to be his daughter. A retelling of "The Warrior Incarnate".

  • Affectionate Nickname: Lo Pei's nickname for his daughter Lo Mei was "his (little) may-flower".
  • Back for the Dead: The receptionist of the Dark Hand's headquarters returns at the end of this chapter, only to be killed off.
  • Batter Up!: Valerie tries to attack the Enforcers with a cricket bat when they come to Uncle's store, but Ratso easily catches it with his hand.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": While raging at Valmont at the ending of the chapter, Shendu lets out two of these, first a big "ENOUGH!" and then a big "SILENCE!".
  • Big "WHAT?!": Valerie yells this when she learns that Jade accidentally broke Lo Pei's statue.
  • Cliffhanger: With Valmont's secretary burned alive as an example, Shendu warns him not to fail again.
  • Continuity Nod: When Valerie fails to attack the Enforcers with a cricket bat, Finn tells her that she can't fool them a second time in reference to their first fight when she surprised them by using her broom like a baseball bat against them.
  • Daddy's Girl: Lo Pei states that he and Mei were as close as father and daughter can be.
  • Death by Childbirth: Lo Pei's wife is revealed to have died in childbirth.
  • Facepalm: Valerie does this in response to Jackie and Uncle's Stereo Fibbing when the Enforcers demand to know where Lo Pei's statue is.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Lo Pei is revealed to have been one in life; after his wife died in childbirth, he did his best to raise their children by himself under a tyrant's rule. His beloved daughter was forcibly taken as a bride by said tyrant, so Pei rallied his enslaved people in an effort to rescue her. While he managed to overthrow "the Ultimate Evil", he couldn't save Mei.
  • Jaw Drop: Valerie has this reaction when she discovers that while she was away for a moment, Jade flooded the laundry room with bubbles as a means of running away from Section 13.
  • Like a Son to Me: When Lo Pei, having discovered he's just an animated statue of the real deal and that Valerie is not Mei, pulls his canon Heroic Sacrifice, Valerie begs him not to. Before parting ways with her, he tells her that though she's not Mei, she still reminds him of her.
Lo Pei: Though you are not my child by blood, you are mine through my heart. Go now, be safe, and remember your father, as you have showed me to remember my daughter.
  • Make an Example of Them: The chapter ends with Shendu, utterly fed up with the Dark Hand's ineptitude, burning Valmont's secretary alive as a serious warning to Valmont.
  • Mundane Solution: The Enforcers attempt to attack Jackie with antique swords like in canon, but Valerie prevents that by spraying them with hot tea water, prompting them to scram at once.
  • Never My Fault: With the Enforcers having managed to take all the Talismans but the Rat from Lo Pei, Shendu orders them not to return without it as well, allowing the heroes to reclaim them. Valmont attempts to bring this up in the face of Shendu's harsh criticism, but the enraged demon refuses to hear it.
  • On Second Thought: Valerie brags when Lo Pei knocks out Tohru with a kick, only for the Shadowkhan to appear immediately afterwards.
Valerie: Wow. Who needs magic when you got moves like that! [the Shadowhan appear, causing her to gulp] Err, actually, magic would be good right about now.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: The real Lo Pei's daughter Mei died before he took down Shendu.
  • Parents Know Their Children: Lo Pei believes Valerie to be his daughter due to the similar eyes and dismisses the otherwise different appearances to be the result of a concealment spell. He refers to this trope by saying that any father can know his beloved child anywhere.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: While berating Valmont at the chapter's end, Shendu has this to say:
Shendu: The talismans were in your men's possession and they lose EVERY. SINGLE. ONE?!
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Failing to save his daughter made Shendu's downfall a sour victory to Lo Pei.
  • Real After All: Valerie reads from one of Uncle's books what she thinks is a fictious story about Demon Sorcerers that were banished to a form of hell. Those familiar with canon know she'll end up discovering she's not reading fiction.
  • Tempting Fate: Happens with Valerie when Jackie has her keep an eye on Jade while he deals with Lo Pei, only for Jade to escape.
Valerie resigned herself to babysitting duty, but at least it would keep Jade out of anymore trouble.
Yeah. That lasted for all of five minutes.
  • Your Makeup Is Running: The tears of the Dark Hand's secretary have smeared her excessive makeup when the Shadowkhan bring her to Valmont's office.
