Recap / The UltimateEvil, "A Friend In Need"

Go To

With Valerie still on bad terms with Uncle, Jade calls for her aid after Valmont injects Jackie with the poison that'll turn him to stone. A retelling of "The Rock".

  • Batter Up!: Valerie arms herself with a cricket bat when she accompanies Jade to Coit Tower, but she doesn't end up using it.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Valerie's reaction when Jade says she intends to go through with the Dark Hand's ultimatum.
  • Big "YES!": When Valerie agrees to come to the shop, Jade exclaims "YES!" so loudly that Valerie has to hold the phone away from her ear.
  • Blatant Lies: Jade, hoping Uncle and Valerie would reconcile, coaxes her into coming to the shop by claiming not-so-convincingly that Uncle has gone out to play bingo.
  • Faster Than They Look: When Shendu orders Valerie to be stopped, Tohru rushes at her much quicker than she would have thought possible from such a heavy man.
  • Hot Drink Cure: Valerie, suffering from cold, drinks hot tea before being invited by Jade to dine at the shop.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Uncle is told by Valerie that she thought he had gone out to play bingo, the old man responds that he's not an ancient relic who plays bingo.
  • In Spite of a Nail: In the canon episode, Tohru destroyed the antidote after he realized the ransom wasn't full, and he ended up revealing the Horse Talisman's power by using it to cure his cold, after which the completely petrified Jackie was turned back to normal with it. Here Valerie prevents Tohru from destroying the antidote by threatening to inject herself with Jackie's infected blood. Tohru then spends the ensuing fight holding Valerie in a bear hug, but after Jackie's turned completely to stone, Valerie manages to force Tohru to hand over the antidote, which is then used to return Jackie back to normal. The Horse Talisman's power is discovered afterwards when Valerie accidentally uses it to cure her cold.
  • Man Bites Man: When Valerie is trapped in Tohru's bear hug, she resorts to biting his exposed neck. He loosens his grip in his surprise long enough for her to free her arm which holds the syringe filled with Jackie's infected blood. She then presses the needle against his head and uses it to force him to release her and hand over the antidote.
  • Stop, or I Shoot Myself!: When Tohru is about to destroy the antidote, Valerie, having known since the previous chapter that the Dark Hand's mysterious client wants her alive, uses a syringe to take some blood from Jackie and threatens to inject it into herself and risk turning herself to stone as well. The Enforcers contact Valmont on her prodding to explain the situation, but the canon fight breaks out when Shendu orders Valerie to be stopped.
  • Villain Respect: Shendu admits to himself at the chapter's end that he's rather impressed of how Valerie foiled Valmont's Poison and Cure Gambit.
Shendu was also rather impressed, for Valerie had shown herself to be a rather resourceful woman. Not to mention brave, intelligent and loyal. He was rather proud that his Other was such a capable one, not completely pointless as he'd found most humans to be.
