Go To

Jackie gets the Dog Talisman in time for Uncle's birthday, who finds out that it bestows the power of immortality on the user. The Chan family then heads to Bavaria to claim the Pig Talisman, only to fight against Hak Foo, a freelance enforcer Valmont hired.

Episode Tropes:

  • Ageless Birthday Episode: The episode takes place on Uncle's birthday, but his age isn't given, although Jackie says that Uncle's sign is the dog. Since he appears to be in his 60s or 70s, this would mean he was born in either 1922 or 1934.
  • Badass Boast:
Hak Foo: Gorilla snaps frail twig!
(Uncle leaps out of the way)
Uncle: Twig may be frail, but roots are slippery.
  • Birthday Hater: Uncle starts out this way.
Jade: But Uncle, we have cake. We have to celebrate.
Uncle: When I am another year younger, then I will celebrate.
  • Back in the Saddle: Uncle secretly uses the Dog talisman to rejuvenate himself and help Jackie find the Pig talisman and fight the Dark Hand.
Jackie: Jade, Uncle just leapt 20 feet into the air!
    Jade: Go, Uncle!
  • Call-Back:
    • Back in " The Mask of El Toro Fuerte", Finn states that they had no idea what the Ox Talisman did at the time, suggesting that it would make Jackie grow fifty feet tall and shoot lasers out of his eyes. The Pig Talisman gives out laser vision.
    • One of Uncle's gifts is the picture of Jade and Capt. Black at Melvin World when she was possessed by Shendu.
    • Jackie is upset that he's in Bavaria because that's where the talisman hunt started when he inadvertently found the Rooster talisman.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Hak Foo in spades.
Hak Foo: Angry Crow takes flight!
Uncle: Thank you for sharing, Angry Crow!
  • Chekhov's Gun: When the Chans enter Bavaria, there's a close-up of a clock tower that has a cymbal smashing pig wearing ledehosen. And perched on top of his hat is a talisman.
  • Convenience Store Gift Shopping: When Jade tells him that Uncle's birthday is tomorrow, Jackie hurriedly heads into the nearest gift shop and buys a basket of chocolate and cheese. When he returns home, he gives Uncle the basket, but Uncle merely remarks "Chocolate stains my teeth, and cheese makes my... none of your business". Subverted when they find that the chocolates he purchased are seemingly modeled after the pig talisman.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Hak Foo breaking a cantaloupe with his fist.
    Hak Foo: SMASHING MELON FIST!
  • Eye Beams: The pig talisman's power.
Hak Foo: (confused) Heat beam eye blast?... Heat beam eye blast!
  • Foil: Hak Foo is this to Tohru. Tohru is a Mighty Glacier, slow and thoughtful, whereas Hak Foo is a Lightning Bruiser, thinking particularly quickly.
  • Fragile Speedster: With the Dog Talisman giving Uncle youthful fitness, he fares against Hak Foo by quickly dodging and anticipating the latter's announced attacks. However, when Hak Foo finally manages to strike Uncle, the old man is knocked unconscious for a minute and survives only thanks to being immortal.
Hak Foo: Gorilla snaps frail twig!
Uncle: [dodges] Twig may be frail, but roots are slippery.
  • Good Pays Better: Discussed by Jackie, who recommends to Tohru that he ought to leave the Dark Hand and join Section 13, noting how they have dental plan and every Thursday is "Donut Day".
  • Immortality Inducer: The Dog Talisman grants immunity to all physical harm. It also allows the wielder to possess youth-like agility. In this case, Uncle doesn't become younger, but he moves and fights as if he was. And thanks to immortality, he survives a brutal sucker punch from Hak Foo.
  • Literal Ass-Kicking: Hak Foo literally kicks Jackie in the behind during their first fight, prompting Jackie to say "baboon leaves tuchus exposed". Hak Foo himself is later on the receiving end of this when Jackie and Uncle are kicking him successively.
  • Meaningful Name: Ferkel is German for "piglet".
  • Mundane Utility: Grandfather Ferkel used the Pig Talisman to melt chocolate just right.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Tohru accidentally falls on the talisman-detecting artifact the Dark Hand have been using to track the talismans, breaking it and making the Dark Hand’s goal to find the talismans more difficult.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In Bavaria, Jade sees Uncle taking a Käsebrot sandwich after complaining "Cheese makes my... none of your business." earlier in the episode, also noting that he hasn't said "One more thing..." since they arrived. This leads Uncle to reveal to her that he's been using the dog talisman.
  • Status Quo Is God: Uncle decides to relinquish the Dog Talisman to Jackie because he's not used to dangerous adventures or moving around so much despite its benefits, especially at his old age.
Uncle: Jackie, thank you for letting me re-experience my youth... But being young is too dangerous! And exhausting! Uncle needs a nap.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Hak Foo and Tohru clearly do not like working together, especially because Tohru gets annoyed when Hak Foo reminds him of his mistake of sitting on the talisman detector.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Hak Foo is shocked to see Uncle is still alive, Tohru asks why he's so worried about Uncle since he's just an old man. Uncle proceeds to beat up Tohru by using Jackie's own arms to strike Tohru's chest.
  • The Worf Effect: Jackie is beaten by Hak Foo to show how brutal he is. Hak Foo, in turn, is beaten by Uncle to show how badass the Dog Talisman is making him.
