Recap / The Proud Family S 2 E 20 Penny Potter

Go To

Penny’s mind blowing Aunt Spice comes into town. Meanwhile, Zoey is going through an existential crisis.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Oscar’s practically begging his mother to stop and not punch him despite just hours earlier asking Spice to levitate her out of his house.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Sugar Mama stops Sista Spice from swindling from Oscar, and later admits even if she doesn't always like him Sugar Mama will always love Oscar, then they hug.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Auntie Spice may be the "fun aunt" whose visits Oscar and Penny look forward to. But she's really an unscrupulous con-artist who only comes by to use Oscar as an unwitting pawn to scam so many people out of their money. Never mind that he looks up to her as the mama he never had, she just sees him as a mere "boob".
  • Everyone Has Standards: While she may not like Oscar at times, Suga Mama would never take advantage of him, which is what separates her from Spice.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Trudy compares Suga Mama's upbringing to how she treats Oscar, Suga Mama denies it - then tears off a piece of Oscar's tie (who she knocked unconscious beforehand) and gives it to Bobby to blow his nose with.
  • Mama Bear: Sugar Mama does not sit well when she catches on that her suspicions about Auntie Spice taking advantage of her son was true. She goes so far as to take back the ill-gotten money, and even uses her sister's powers against her.
  • Non-Indicative Title: Despite the title, Penny is Out of Focus, with the story being centered around Oscar, Zoey, Suga Mama and Spice.
  • Not-So-Phony Psychic: While Sista Spice's a con-artist who's con people into thinking she can give them psychic powers, she is definitively a real psychic.
  • Prank Call: Suga Mama does this to Oscar twice, showing she is a skilled vocal impressionist.
  • Shout-Out: Suga Mama and Spice’s relationship is quite similar to that of Lily and Petunia Evans from the Harry Potter books, in which one sister is envious of the magical one (In Suga Mama’s case, she’s just fed up with being The Unfavorite towards her sister and her growing up). Coincidently, the title itself is a reference to Harry Potter in general.
  • Sunken Face: Oscar ends up with one after Suga Mama punches him, knocking him out cold for a few minutes.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: One of the few episodes that end with Oscar actually getting real affection from Suga Mama. Although he does still get questioned for the scam offscreen, as shown on a newspaper article.
  • Traitor Shot: When Oscar is hugging his Auntie Spice and lauding her as his mother figure, Auntie Spice smiles to herself deviously, hinting the audience that her affection towards her nephew isn't genuine.
  • Verbal Tic: "Shaza!" as said by Spice’s faithful assistant.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Although Suga Mama tells Oscar that she’s gone, Spice’s ultimate fate (onscreen) is pretty much left ambiguous.
