Recap / The Lion Guard S3 E19 "Return to the Pride Lands"

Go To

When the Lion Guard return to the Pride Lands, they discovered Vitani has formed her own Lion Guard in their absence.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • A Day in the Limelight: There's a lot of focus on Vitani, who inherits the Roar and position of leader of the Lion Guard.
  • And the Adventure Continues: The Lion Guard relinquish their posts to Vitani and her own Guard, but now they are going to keep defending the Tree of Life with the Night Pride.
  • As You Know: The others catch Kion and co. up on the events of the sequel movie.
  • Ascended Extra: Vitani was only a minor character in The Lion King II, and had even less screentime during her guest appearance in "Lions In The Outlands". This episode that serves as a direct follow-up to the second movie, focuses more on her than it does on Kiara and Kovu.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: Kion's marriage to Rani, has him anointed as King of the Tree of Life.
  • Back for the Finale: Several of the characters from throughout the series.
  • Bad Liar: When Kion tries to claim his relationship with Rani is just friendly, Kiara immediately believes that the relationship is something much more than just friendly.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Vitani says "hevi kabisa" when Kion uses the roar to lift Pride Rock as a way to show Vitani what it means to truly master the roar of the elders, this catchphrase is usually said by Kion himself.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Vitani only remembers Kion from "Lions In The Outlands", even though she didn't recognize him at first. On the other hand, she doesn't remember the rest of Kion's friends from their last encounter, thinking they were Outlanders, whom they thought were enemies.
  • Call-Back: Vitani calls for a Mashindano, which was previously seen in a couple of the crocodile episodes before.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: The Lion Guard, joined by the hyenas, vultures and Azaad, were all ready to go to the Pridelands to take on Zira...only to find out Zira is no more and the war between both factions of lions is over.
  • Cliffhanger Cop Out: Invoked via Foregone Conclusion. Following the previous episode, the Guard are rushing home to stop Zira from invading the Pride Lands. Anyone who has seen Simba's Pride already knows that Zira will be defeated before they arrive.
  • Cool Big Sis: Kiara, while slightly teasing Kion about his pretty bad attempt to hide his real feelings for Rani, is completely accepting of the fact he loves her, and never once tries to tease him for it. In fact, she openly encourages him that if he truly loves her, he should go back to her, indicating that she completely accepts the idea of him loving someone far away. She similarly doesn't doubt that Simba will not approve, arguing Mom and Dad would immediately accept Kion's love.
  • Distant Finale: This episode is essentially an epilogue to the second film, showing what had happened not long after Zira was defeated. With this in mind, this episode serves as a finale to the franchise as a whole.
  • Finale Credits: The end credits for the episode trace the Guard's entire route to the Tree of Life over the course of the season, ending at the tree with the spirits of the Kings of the past.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Kion has been away from the Pride Lands too long that much has changed in the Pridelands. Kion is completely behind on events, received the news about Zira's impending attack moments too late, and is in complete shock that the Outsiders have rejoined Pride Rock.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: While Kovu explains what happened to Zira in the climax of Simba's Pride, neither he or anyone else mentions that Nuka also died during that film in a failed attempt to kill Simba. Kion likewise never even asks about Nuka, despite previously meeting and fighting him in "Lions In The Outlands".
  • For Want Of A Nail: As it turns out, Kion's first (and only) encounter with Zira kickstarted the events of Kiara's adolescence in the second film.
  • Graceful Loser: Kion realizes from Askari's words about how the leader of the Lion Guard doesn't necessarily need the Roar that Vitani has proven her worth as the Fiercest and the leader of the new Lion Guard.
  • Grand Finale: The final episode of the series.
  • I Choose to Stay: Kion and the rest of the former Guard decide to leave the Pride Lands and stay at the Tree of Life for good.
  • Just Friends: How Kion tries to insist his relationship with Rani when he reveals it to Kiara. She doesn't believe it for a second. Then they have a serious talk about it, with Kion understanding why Kiara felt a certain way for Kovu.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Upon witnessing Zira and her Outsiders march towards the Pride Lands, Jasiri recommended against engaging them, as doing so without Kion would be complete suicide.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: Kion's group and Vitani's group think the other is an enemy for different reasons; Kion was seeking Zira, and he remembers Vitani as one of her lions from his last encounter with them, not knowing they have joined Simba's Pride. Vitani still thinks the hyenas are trying to invade the Pridelands, and it looks like they're being led by a lion with the mark of evil. Kiara goes in and tells Kion to stand down.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Kion and his friends arrived moments too late after the big battle against Zira, so they don't know that the Outsiders have rejoined the Pridelanders. Even the Hyenas themselves didn't know this either, because they were instructed to hide out and not to engage Zira until Kion arrives so they didn't see what happened. Likewise, Vitani and the newly-reformed Outsiders still think the hyenas are their enemies, not realizing they reformed months ago.
  • Mighty Roar: Kion and Rani issue a joint one across their new kingdom as they marry.
  • Mythology Gag: Madoa mentions that Jasiri told all the hyenas to stay hidden while she was gone, explaining why no hyenas appear at all in Lion King 2.
  • Never Say "Die": Rather than telling Kion about how Zira drowned, Kovu simply says that she "completed her journey on the Circle of Life."
  • Official Couple: Kion is allowed to stay with Rani at the Tree of Life and becomes king alongside her.
  • Out of Focus: After Kion and the Guard learn how Kiara and Kovu brought about peace and will become King and Queen of the Pride Lands, they become irrelevant for the rest of the episode as the focus shifts to Vitani and her new Lion Guard.
  • Passing the Torch: Vitani receives such from Kion when he makes her the new leader of the Guard when he and his friends leave permanently for the Tree of Life.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The previous episode had the Lion Guard and their allies being warned about Zira and the Outsiders invading the Pride Lands. This episode opens with them rushing home, only to find out that the conflict has already been resolved without them—by Kiara herself.
  • Ship Sinking: Every ship that involved Kion is effectively sunk by him marrying Rani. The ones with Jasiri and Fuli especially, with both not only supporting Kion but also having shown interest in other boys. This pretty much says they never saw him as anything more than just a close friend.
  • So Proud of You: Askari expresses this for Kion when he makes Vitani the new leader of the Lion Guard. And then everyone else follows suit when Kion is crowned king of the Tree of Life.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: The vultures have firmly established their Heel–Face Turn, declaring their loyalty to Jasiri and generally being friendlier, and not lighting their enemies on fire.
  • Triumphant Reprise: "Long Live the Queen" from the titular episode is brought back, with an additional line of "Long live, long live, long live the king" for Kion.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The vultures show up to join the hyenas for what they think will be a battle against the Outsiders. However, the jackals, who also swore allegiance to Jasiri, are nowhere to be seen. It's also never revealed what happened to Kiburi and his crocodiles. The skinks, Kenge, and Sumu too.
  • Worf Had the Flu: The competition for The Strongest happened on a very hot day, which is not ideal for Beshte, and Ma Tembo (whom was on top of the rock he was trying to push) tells him it's not worth it.
